View Full Version : PlayStation 3 Full Backwards Compatability Not a Certainty

Looks like the backwards compatability problem is not unique to Microsoft after all. GamesIndustry.biz (http://www.gamesindustry.biz/content_page.php?aid=12554) has the story (http://www.gamesindustry.biz/content_page.php?aid=12554).
Speaking to the IDG News Service, Sony spokesperson Reiko Sakamoto said: "It's hard to say the PlayStation 3 will be 100 per cent backwards compatible."
"But as we said earlier this year, we aim to make it so as much as possible."
Sakamoto's comments came after Sony published a list of games which are not compatible with the new silver slimline PS2 console, due to go on sale in Japan next month. A total of 38 PSone and nine PS2 games were listed, including Tekken 5, Hitman: Contracts and Resident Evil.
NOTE - This is NOT Sony bashing, it's news.

PS2 wasn't 100% BC. It was nearly but not 100%. Even if you can play like 60% of PS2 and PS1 titles on the PS3 it's still better than what current reports are saying MS have done.

Hmmm....the slimline PS2 can't play some PS2 games? That seems...odd.

Given that the new PS2 isn't 100% compatibile, I figured that the same list would have problems on the PS3. I can't say this is unexpected or anything. The Microsoft fanboys will have fun with it, though.

LOL fitbabits. Now you know your not allowed to post negative sony news tut tut ;)
I have to admit though that this doesn't suprise me.As earthworm48 said earlier the other consoles wasn't 100% compatible either.
Lets hope this article doesn't activate the S.A.D.S system. It's been pretty effective recently ;)

Too late :)
Anyway the title is pretty misleading. The word "FULL" as in "FULL BACKWARDS COMPATIBILITY" is missing.
Tsk, tsk, fitbabits.

The new.. slimline PS2.. doesn't support Tekken 5? Am I reading that right? Never heard of a console not supporting it's own games :/
I'm not really too fussed with BC, we used it to play bishi bashi special, harvest moon (both PS1) and wipeout 2097 but that's about it [edit] using a PS2
Helpful if you're trading in your old console, but I like to keep mine.

I fixed it.
Not much good news for Sony lately, their total company profits dropped 46% as well. (http://www.gamesindustry.biz/content_page.php?aid=12563) Most likely PS3 R&D costs.

A PS2 that can't play some PS2 games... we go to consoles to get away from the PC bullshit and we still get fucked.

Bah. You just have to take good care of your PS2... and mod it. Then it'll work great for awhile! :D
A healthy supply of Japanese games that you can't understand helps keep a console young.

Knowing Sony they will sell an adaptor that will let you play PS2 games on your new silver PS2.

I still have an original PS2 from when GT3 was released in box set form, still works fine ^_^
How can a new PS2 not be compatible with all PS2 games. That makes no sense to me.

The changed parts of the bios, and things that were used in a few games got cut out, killing the compatibility with every title. It's something like 1% or 2% of PS2 games can't be played on the new system, so its not something that's all that noticed.

Backwards compatibility is still not a big deal.
New revision incompatibility is a much bigger deal.
Let's hope that shit doesn't become a trend.

Something tells me that there are way way WAY more games that don't work with the new model, that they aren't admitting to or are aware of.

While that's cool and dandy from the manufacturers and business point of view it's UNACCEPTABLE from consumers POV, sorry.

I hate people who take every piece of info that is negative and blow it WAY out of proportion. Personally, I think a redesign of a console should work with every game that was originally functional w/the original PS2. So far, a few games have been reported not to work...in Japan. We haven't even seen this new PS2. As for PS3 not supporting all games, it really isn't a huge issue. I'm sure they will support far more than MS.

For anyone interested, the satin silver slim PS2 list of problematic games:
F1 2001: freezes sometimes after titlescreen.
F1 2002: freezes sometimes after titlescreen when GT-FORCE controller attached (otherwise it plays fine).
Hitman Contract: creating game saves take an extended period of time.
Gauntlet Dark Legacy: freezes sometimes following intro movie.
Racing Battle C1 Grand Prix: sometimes sound effects will loop repeatedly when hitting walls/rails.
Tekken 5: Tekken 3 (Arcade History) freezes sometimes after save screen, Tekken 5 plays fine.
The Stylish Mahjong: freezes sometimes at the save screen after changing options.
There are also around 40 or so PS1 titles with various problems, the only one I could find worth mentioning is Biohazard 2...

I'm confused. The title says, PS3 not 100% backwards compatible maybe, and the details talk about PS2? Why is the rumor the title and the fact in the description? Oh yeah, it's news. Comon, try harder you could have made TWO articles from this, one after the other!

The PS2 issue was mentioned in the news article. News is as news does, I suppose.

It does support Tekken 5. I've played the game at a slim PS2 at a friend's house. As far as I know, the only (at least major) title that doesn't work on the slim PS2 is Final Fantasy 11, because of the lack of a HD. I think it's stupid personally - they should have designed the thing to just connect to the HD somehow.
I fixed it.

To be fair, none of the big 3 have had much in the way of good news lately. Lots of negative news coming up to the 360 launch, and next to nothing from Nintendo for at least the last month.

Oddly enough the ps2 I bought at launch has been working fine. Guess it depends on how you abuse your machine.

the ps2 i bought at launch has been dying slowly. controllers sometimes disconnect briefly, dosen't load some of my games anymore.
also this isn't the us slimline, it's the new 'silver slimline' which is different. at least it's a different model number, who knows what they've changed.
I really have to wonder about sony though, why make so many versions of the ps2? You're practically guaranteed to have compatibility issues with a machine that complex.

It's a constant refinement process that will persist to the last PS2. It's all about improving/maximising all levels of the manufacturing process while raising profits...

Yes I do terrible things to my PS2 like keep them in the same spot for their entire lives, keep them clean and insert PS2 discs so I can play games. Truly I am a sadist.
