In celebration of the coming of Gothic 3, here is a very good interview with Stefan Berger from JoWood and Kai Rosenkranz from Piranha Bytes done by Total Video Games (http://www.totalvideogames.com/articles/Gothic_III_Q&A_Feature_8738_5204_0_0_0_0_20.htm).

Would it be fair to say that in terms of sales and expectations so far Gothic has not fared as well as you’d hoped, particularly outside of Germany? The UK and USA market are ones you wish to crack so how will this be achieved with Gothic 3?
"By thanking Evil Avatar!" Ok, I put that answer in there since we have known from day one what a great game this is and have shamelessly been promoting the series. There are some good questions and answers here. They also mention:

Gothic compilations such as the ‘Collectors edition’ (which contains all the previous Gothic products) will be available worldwide before the third part's release.
Those of you who like to play the first one and never had the chance (and didn't want to pay $75 bucks for a used copy on EBay), well, your chance is coming.

i tried to like gothic 2 but the control system was just too rediculous for me. hopefully gothic 3 streamlines this.

honestly it's stuff like this that makes me wish that games were open source, excellent games marred by questionable design choices.

I like Gothic a lot.

With that said, this is a very bottomline interview with no new info.

I found the controls to be above average for combat as fas as my tastes go. You can execute combinations and have a quirky circle strafing ability (quirky because if your focus goes to an object or another person then you end up losing 'focus' on you primary target and strafe the new 'target' instead). The main interface is a bit cludgy, yet it is passable IMHO. I'd rate it better than Morrowind and less than BoD. This is for combat only, mind you.

I had a pretty damned good fight with three bandits last night that lasted a good 5 minutes or so with all of the dodging and parrying. It was great satisfaction to hear steel hitting steel as blades deflected one another before gutting those three bastards and having 5 hp left at the end. To each his own though.

I'll be first in line to pick up Gothic 3.

Part 1 is going for $75 on Ebay? Holy crap. That's insane. I love the series, but that's insane.

I just finished Gothic.

I suppose this is what a lot people went through with Halo 2 - I am SO disappointed by the endgame.

--> DON'T READ IF YOU'RE SPOILER-SENSITIVE <--

The endgame fight is ACTUALLY with the arch-mofo's lackeys - the supposedly strongest of whom couldn't even hurt me. That's right, not 1 god-forsaken point of damage. Either I'm MFing strong or the devs F-ed up. The towering creature feature pitched a tent and watched as I drove him over with some unknown/unexplained express whirlwind.

And then black screen... "Oh, that was it."

I'm getting blue balls here!

Wow Liquidize, what type of character did you have? I remember the last fight where I barely survived with my wizard. Gothic 2 will have a better ending for you then. Again, with a Paladin, I had to do a lot of healing.

I can't comment on the ending of Gothic (never played it), but Gothic 2 has a great ending. Be sure to stay in your seat through the credits. ;)

I actually preferred the controls to those of Morrowinds, at least when it came to combat. I actually felt like I was more involved with the combat in Gothic 2, whereas in Morrowind it's just *click* *click* *click* until you actually register a "hit". In Gothic 2 if you miss, you actually miss, or hit your opponent's weapon, etc. None of this die-role filth.

I finished Gothic 2 with dragon hunter. I remember the ending ending. The endgame fight was better but still wasn't much. I distracted them with my golems and killed them easy.

I finished Gothic this morning with mage at lvl 37. With a circle 6 mage and 20 runes, I cleaned house without a sweat! I had 22 summon demon scrolls, 10 army of darkness scrolls, and at least 14 summon golem scrolls I didn't even get to use, not to mention hundreds of potions of every kind. When I went in to stab the hearts I went in sprinting on speed potions, lured the demonlord out, kill 'em, and repeat.

And then that was it. I was expecting a grand finale showdown that never existed.

I'm so gonna take it up with them Pirahnas.

I beat Gothic with a fighter. The one thing I remember is having a ton of money at that point, and the final fight was waaaay easy.

Hmmmm.... I think my wizard was in the low 30s and I didn't use that many scrolls. I guess I did it the hard way. I agree about the combat - I felt like I was fighting, and not clicking. There were a few knock out drawn out fights that were some of the greatest with blocks and stuff for a few minutes and surviving with almost no hit points left. Those were the best. It will be interesting to try Night of the Raven since it makes everything so much more difficult.

Yikes, I can't honestly imagine the game being much more difficult. It really kicked my ass at several points. I had to use exploits to get through parts of it - mostly getting enemies stuck on the environment, etc...
