shack (http://www.shacknews.com/onearticle.x/54855):
A new screenshot from a recent build of the next Windows shows that developer Microsoft is planning to incorporate more robust PC gaming functionality into its operating software.
According to an image from ThinkNext (http://www.shacknews.com/screenshots.x?gallery=10751&game_id=), the games startup menu in the current build of Windows 7 includes an option to automatically alert users to updates for PC games. An option box to allow Windows to automatically download "information and news about games and game providers" is also shown.
Windows 7 is expected to be released in January 2010.

Nice idea, but I guess few games will support it, which means: fail. If game publishers could agree on some common features which every game would support, PC gaming would be even stronger.

Wow... a glorified RSS feed from a patch download website. Totally not possible in Windows XP/Vista.

Will Windows 7 be really worth it? If I remember correct I think they have said that version of Windows will not have any significant or greater change of course that could change..

I beg to difer...2 years is not that long, fiven that most folks are happy with XP. It just reinforces the belief that Vista is the new "ME", and will be abandoned PDQ.

This is an awesome feature because I HATE patch management.

it should be, it's bloatware and was sold to us gamers on the back of Dx10... and where has that gotten us?
Of my group of gaming friends just about everyone is, or is planning to head back to xp!

This I can get enthused about.
But I wast this to go further and happen for all (selected) programs. Then (in my magical fairy land) every company won't have to install an auto-updater that always runs in the background when I install their software or drivers.

Hmmm,
Wasn't Vista supposed to herald in a new era of gaming with Direct X 10? Maybe by 2010 they'll get vista to be solid as XP and then people will have forgotten all the pains of their latest OS. It think thats just a novelty to link a game to another site for an update. Maybe it will sell bazillions, who knows. I get cynical as i grow older in this gaming age...Oh well....Long live Microsoft!

Pshaw - I do any automatic updates for windows; manual updates occassionally, automatic always gets turned off.

Yeah, because that's what users are concerned about.
Granted, this is all from a supposed screenshot. But really, is this news-worthy? Is anyone creaming their pants or screaming mad about this? Will it fucking matter in the development cycles, iterations, and changes between now and when it comes out?
Honestly, this should have been a forum post, not front-page material.

Is the new Windows going to enable proper game mode for windows? IE it unloads most of the OS and it's just the game and server browser functions.
That would be cool.

Every version of Windows has been released three years after the last one, except for Vista.

When is Microsoft going to figure out that what we want is not new features, its less bugs and fewer pointless changes. Don't move all the shit it took me years to find in the old version, don't add some new bullshit instead of fixing the old bullshit, and FFS, dont try to force me to use it.
