It seems that some customers in the US purchasing Civilization IV this week will get a little surprise in the box. (http://www.gamespot.com/6136605?part=rss&tag=gs_news&subj=6136605) That surprise? The French version of the game's tech tree manual.

Due to an assembly plant error, some US copies of 2K Games' Civilization IV contained posters of the game's tech tree system in French. Players who receive one of these copies are asked to not return them to the store, but instead are asked to go online to fill out a form to have an English language poster mailed to them. While waiting for that to arrive, players can download a PDF file of the English poster to figure out how to get from agriculture to artillery...and beyond.
Ooops.

Well, that and the game just dosen't start for many people with Radeon cards. Not that ANY major game site has made mention of this, but a quick look in any civ4 forum will show you that a large number of people are affected by this.

Doesn't start if you are running cd-rom emulation software either  .

That's where a .bat comes in. Unless you've got a reason to emulate CDs while playing a fullscreen game...

What, to kill the emulator and bring it back up afterwards? That bullshit. I bought the game, anyone who knows how to even use daemon tools or alcohol certainly knows how to get around it. It does no good and its probably only in there so safedisc or whoever can market the feature to the clueless execs out there.

A freind brought this game by our hang-out earlier today. He seemed pretty happy with it, despite having to run it at it's lowest settings on his current PC which he is in the process of replacing. Seems pretty cool, but I've bought five games this week and need no more <.<

Having only played it for 15 minutes I'll say the interface seems to be very very slick and polished. I loved Civ3, but that always struck me as clunky.

Civ3 is an awesome game in its own right, just finished playing it about 30 mins ago (i got trashed by the comp ai) Thing is even after a defeat the game is just playable and fun you go back for more (which i did ofc).

Looking forward to Civ4, Civ1 almost cost me my Maths A level over a decade ago.

Also, while I have trashed the games graphics endlessly, it really looks pretty decent in person. I'm running it at 1600x1200 4xFSAA and everything on high though.

I can run the game at those same settings, but it seems like the refresh rate is really low for me when I do. Any way to change the refresh rate? In the meantime, I went back to 1280x960, still gorgeous.

Yep, game's a no go on my ATI x800. At least I didn't get a French Tech Tree poster, huh? Now that would have been a pain.

Plus the CDs are mislabeled - Disk 1 says install, Disk 2 says play, and the manual says Disk 2 is play, but it's backwards.

And this was the one game I was buying this week. Sheesh.

Depends on your drivers. The latest Nvidia drivers seem to use whatever your desktop is set to, older nvidia drivers at refresh overrides you could configure in the nvidia control panel. Not sure how ATI handles it.

Instead of returning the French tech tree, we could use it as an opportunity to expand our language skills.

Always look on the bright side. :)

I was going to ask if anyone else noticed that but this is the first time I've looked up in 6 hours after my first game. :D

I'm absolutely loving, and didn't get the wrong tech tree which is always nice. Someone mentioned how they felt Civ3 was too cluttered and that's probably the most noticeable thing, aside from the completely different pace. It acctually seems more cluttered and esoteric when you first jump in and don't know what anything does, of course when you learn the interface it's clear how much better things are displayed.

As far as ATI cards I'm playing it on a Mobility 9200 right now with only a slight video playback error when the movies come up but it's only momentary and doesn't affect the game in the least.

Oh and did anyone notice that the icon for the internet tech has a certain VP who "created" it? ;)

That is pretty amusing, but that's another joke that's gotten pretty stale. The guy never even said that he "created" the internet.

Anybody else also notice that the in game tech tree is a bit screwed up? For example I had just researched Polytheism and went to research Monotheism. I clicked on Mono though and it made me go through Masonry, which was not shown on the tech tree. Further review in the poster showed that it IS on there as a pre-requisite for Monotheism. So looks like they'll need to throw that in the patch as well.

Sweet, this and that the interface is slick are what I was waiting to hear. Too many games get 're-imagined' only to have a much narrower scope and be far less replayable (AoEIII, anyone?) but this really sounds like a great new angle on a great franchise.

I'll be picking this up once I've got my new HDD - finally got bittorrent working last week on my shitty router, hence the lack of space :o

Yeah, both me and my brother got the French map. I hope Take 2 doesn't give us any crap about sending two copies of the English map to the same house. We both ponied up $50, we should both get the map.

Can anyone who has actually played the game give a short list of things that are new in this edition? I already have the first and the second, so what makes this worth the $50?

Good link, The walkthrough is quite long but interseting:

I haven't sunk my teeth into it enough to give you a list, going to get more into it this weekend.

If you visit ANY gaming site like Gamespot and etc, they have written about the new stuff many times over.

Well, I haven't played I or II in a very long time, but here are some of the things I don't remember from past Civ games (and so believe are new) that I really enjoyed:

Improved visuals. The screenshots don't do this justice, the animation is slick and smooth, and the random map generator makes some very cool looking terrain, from tundra to desert, very cool stuff. The cities and units are really nice looking, and combat is a blast to watch.

Improved combat. Aside from better looking, the whole concept of a single strength score modified by built-in abilities (archers have first-strike, horse archers are immune to first strike, swordsmen have a 50% bonus when fighting melee units, etc.) coupled with terrain/city bonuses and the wonderful promotions (when units get enough XP they gain a level and pick a new promotion, like a +20% bonus to strength when defending a city) is terrific.

More interesting tech-tree. Now every tech unlocks or introduces new game comcepts. Want to build a roade? You need to learn about the Wheel. Want to trade technology with your neighbors? Better learn how to write. No more techs that exist only to lead to new techs, I just love how every tech brings something new to the table, it's very interesting.

Culture borders are true borders, none get into your empire with out declaring war or having an open boarder policy. If war is declared, any enemy units in your area are removed to the border immediately.

Religion is very cool, adding lots of depth to how your early game starts out, since founding a religion can be very lucrative later on, and provides immediate happiness. Though, enemy civs of different religions may not like you as much...

Lots of little touches, like a mouse-over break-down of what modifies an enemy civs disposition (like "-2 we have been cheated in the past by you!" or "+4 You and I share a religion" paraphrased) to great persons, who are born in cities that produce great person points, and these great persons can be used for various purposes, like helping build wonders, a free technology, a super-elite specialist, etc.

Really the link to the walkthrough will have all sorts of cool info, it's a great read and even if you alread have the game, read it as it's full of cool info and strategies.

I could probably go on and on, this game certainly deserves the 9+ reviews it's getting.

I'm running it just fine on my X800, it might be the version of Catalyst you're using. I believe I'm running Catalyst 3.5 or 3.6.

BleedTheFreak - Thanks!! Now I really want to get this game. Unfortunately I am going to have to wait a while. :(

It sounds like they added a lot to the series.
