View Full Version : Pure Evil - Steam Crysis Warhead Broken?
Evil Avatar

I downloaded Crysis Warhead via Steam today... first it installs some required Gamespy crap. You can't get the game to launch without installing something called 'Gamespy Comrad'. I thought we were well past the point where developers were stupid enough to include anything from Gamespy in their software?
I guess not.
After that, when you go to launch the game, it just gives a Steam error and never launches. Cute.
I hope those of you who purchased boxed copies are enjoying your game.
Update: If you exit Steam and restart, it should resolve the Steam error code issue. You will have to manually uninstall Gamespy Comrade from the add/remove Programs after you are forced to install it the first time you start Crysis Warhead. Bah.

I installed the Gamespy shit and immediately uninstalled it with the Add/Remove control panel. I haven't had any problems running the game.
I hope you get it running Evil, I'm on the 4th mission and it's intense.
Not to rub it in or anything...

I got it from steam and I'm loving it.. it works just fine.. I installed that comrad thing, but I said do not start program and do not start with windows. Works just fine, going to uninstall it later tonight. Have only played about an hour but its a blast.

Funny that I have about 10 people on my friends list playing without any problems whatsoever.
Not sure why this would be news when you are the only person incapable of playing...

I just uninstalled it also. I did get the game running. It was FM. It just crashed out with Steam errors about 20 times then worked the next time.
I don't expect to play the game, I'm sure it will not run well enough on my system to be playable, but I thought I would check it out anyway.
Again from the 'Stupid developers' category... I really don't need to sit through 15 minutes of your shitty amateur quality cut-scenes. You should be able to just hit ESC and quit out of garbage like that.

I had the same problem. Something with an error code like -20.
Restart Steam. Fixed it for me. Found the solution on the forums.
At least your PC didn't shut down on the opening movies every time you played the game. Had to turn on vsync in the configuration files - I guess my power supply can't handle what the GTX 260 demands when it gets truly overloaded. (apparently Warhead goes hog wild trying to play those files at 3000fps - Wackman had the same problem, just his power supply survived) Sort of worrying, really. And thanks for the heads up on uninstalling Comrade - I am going to do that ASAP. That was VERY retarded of Valve/EA to do. The original Crysis had it as an option during install.
And then TF2 had issues for me tonight.
And no, I can't blame people for hating PC gaming when this sort of garbage happens. Stalker's "oh hoh you want above 20fps between 6am and 8am? TOO BAD FOR YOU!!" rendering engine isn't helping my mood either. The 360's comforting when all you want to do is just play the damned game when this crap happens. (then again, can't play Stalker on the 360)

I have a box copy. I can't play it either. I think it has the same DRM as Spore. Anyway, the installation fails due to missing files. I found the missing files using Explorer, but it reports they each have 0 bytes. My DVD drive (a Plextor 755SA w/ firmware 1.08) must not be able to read the game. I've already exchanged 1 copy. Both had the same issue.
I wish I purchased the game from Steam!

Thanks. That must be what I did also. I got tired of trying, quit Steam and came back to it later after Cub Scouts and it was working.

Well, I didn't want this to be another PC hating thread since I'm trying out a title I pretty much know that I can't get a good framerate with, but I did at least expect it to launch.
I think I'll end up playing Force Unleashed or Burnout myself and come back to Warhead tomorrow when I'm not so frustrated at it.

Woah, wait. What's this shit with Stalker? I never noticed any issues iwth twilight nuking my performance...although I'm playing on High detail (not max) on XP. Maybe that helps.
I wonder how the new Crysis would run on my machine. Last one I ran I had to run at low/medium, but that was when I had dual 7800s, not the 8800GTS G92 I have now.

Its the sun rays feature in the enhanced lighting setting in Stalker thats eating framerates. It seems like between 6 - 8 AM they are the worst because they are much more dense and the angle in which they are seem. After that the framerates stabilize.
As for Warhead, it seems to be about on par with the original but just optimized and running stable(er).

On-topic: I purchased the game via steam, it runs better than the first Crysis on my rig.
GameSpy isn't a big deal, many games come with it (which is pointless imo), you can simply uninstall it after installing the game.

I have no idea why you guys are bitching and griping about Evil and what he chooses to post on his own site.
Now, what you should be raising a holy ruckus about is the fact that Crysis comes with similar DRM as Spore (""http://ve3d.ign.com/articles/news/41640/Cryteks-Crysis-Warhead-Copy-Protection-FAQ)!
Our passion is making quality games. We put our heart and soul in every game and hope that our fans will enjoy them as well. For years, Crytek fans have been passionately supportive of our efforts and we appreciate all of your dedication.
We realize that copy protection and piracy is a very emotional and hotly debated topic. It is very hard to find a solution that fits both our needs. We need to make an effort to limit piracy but we do not want to limit the experience of our fans.
Warhead uses online authentication and allows up to five activations. This gives you the opportunity to install the game as many times as you want on five different machines.
We also know that multiplayer gamers have different needs, so Crysis Wars does not have an activation limit, but requires the game to be unlocked online once you start the game for the first time. Afterwards it will be possible to play in LAN without any online connection. The CD-key is only required when playing online.
I sincerely hope that you will enjoy playing Warhead as much as we enjoyed making it. We are very proud of it. Our community is the main reason we make games. If there is something you feel we could improve, please tell us what and why and we will do our best to listen to you.
Sincerely,
Cevat Yerli
There are more details at the link about the different DRM schemes for the main game and the mutiplayer portion. Oh, and the Steam version does come with the DRM.
Enjoy!

I have two computers at home, and two at work. Does this mean that I can install Warhead on all four and play from my account on the different ones as much as I'd like, and still be able to download it and play it at my parents house when I'm visiting, on my dads comp (his rig pwnz my rig, and I got a Q6600 and GF9800GTX)... I think that's completely fair. Why the hell would you need to install it on more comps?
Unless of course, every time I get a new IP at home I'm a "new comp", or if I reformat my machine then I'm a "new comp". If so, this is just a lease, not a purchase.

Yeah I don't really have a problem with 5 install limit.. on different PC's myself. I reformat what.. once a year if even, rebuild my computer every 2-2.5 years. So unless reformatting counts as a new computer, I really only have one computer this can on decently.. maybe lowest settings on my laptop.
Assuming reformat does not count and simple upgrades like ram / GPU, WTF are you people made of money with multiple high end computers or trying to take advantage of the system by installing it on 5+ computers for your friends / family? =/
... I'm actually able to edit my post..

Blah blah blah, dude runs his own site, had a legitimate problem I can't blame him for being very frustrated about, put up a blog post about it. We all know what "Pure Evil" posts are - if you don't, you must never read the front page to miss that fact. Yes, Evil has a PC trolling history, but he has a legitimate gripe here with both Gamespy and Steam requiring a restart. Give it a rest.

"I have no idea why you guys are bitching and griping about Evil and what he chooses to post on his own site."
Simple. I have a respect for this site. Stupid newsposts like this, plus gay jokes on the front page reduce that respect.
"Now, what you should be raising a holy ruckus about is the fact that Crysis comes with similar DRM as Spore!"
Why should I care what DRM Crysis comes with? If I find that to be a problem, then I would pirate it. Otherwise, I have the very easy choice of not wasting my time with the game, and instead load up some TF2, or drop a disc into my 360. :)
If a publisher wants to save me $50 by packaging their game with some draconian DRM, then I thank them. It makes the decision on what game to buy that week one item easier.

He could post it in the PC Gamers' section.
But it doesn't surprise me either, it's kinda strange that (and correct me if I'm wrong, please) when he got RROD (bigger problem) he didn't post it here with the "Pure Evill" tag or whatever, but a tiny personal problem with Steam is a major thing and must be posted in the news section and the main page with a title which gives the readers a wrong impression (Whats wrong with a more specific title like " I have a problem with Crysis Warhead"?), when I first read the title I was like "Oh, What have they fucked up now?".
It's alright to be an Anti-PC-Gamer or whatever, but trying to hide it...well that's an other story.

And promptly be flamed out regardless.
People are grinding an axe with him here. I have just as much an issue with Evil's PC trolling history as anyone else here, but I'll say this again. In bold.
THE DUDE HAD A LEGITIMATE COMPLAINT HERE and it is one of the MAJOR problems that has always and still plagues PC gaming that Steam is supposed to fix. He had every right to be as frustrated as he was, and a Pure Evil post is not uncalled for here.
For your comparison to RRODs, there are numerous reasons why he wouldn't post about that. Primarily among them is that WE HAVE EN ENTIRE FORUM DEDICATED TO JUST THIS PROBLEM. (http://www.evilavatar.com/forums/forumdisplay.php?f=33) :P
I'm still having problems getting Warhead to play. The second level refuses to load for me. Off to find some beta drivers, yay!
e: beta drivers fixed the problem, but I'm getting tired of getting dumped to the desktop on autosaves. Crytek failed QA here pretty miserably.
