From RevoGaming.net (http://www.revogaming.net):

Nintendo has registered a patent (http://patft.uspto.gov/netacgi/nph-Parser?Sect1=PTO2&Sect2=HITOFF&u=/netahtml/search-adv.htm&r=9&p=1&f=G&l=50&d=ptxt&S1=Nintendo&OS=Nintendo&RS=Nintendo) for a security system for a console with Hard Drive and Internet Access capabilities, which is no doubt the Nintendo Revolution.

After speaking with some people who could make sense of it, we've come to the conclusion that it is a patent for the Nintendo Revolution's "virtual console" feature, allowing safe and encrypted download of older games and new game demos etc. via internet connection to a "hard drive", which could be the Revolution's onboard 512MB or an attachable USB 2.0 hard drive.

Patent?

XBox 1 is prior art? It's a patent for a security system for a console with Hard Drive and Internet Access capabilities. Not a patent for a system with Hard Drive and Internet Access capabilities. So don't worry, Ninendo isn't trying to patent kill xbox or PS3.

Sounds fairly similar to the FDS or N64DD.

I'm liking the USB 2.0 HDD. If we can attach one of those babies to the Revolution, we won't be limited by the internal memory.

The Revolution supports SD cards, so you won't be limited either way.
