The industry has been trending this way for the past 4 years or so, but it's interesting to see a major player like Capcom come out and say it: they're going all multiplatform, all the time. From Joystiq (http://www.joystiq.com/2008/09/11/capcom-all-major-titles-will-be-multiplatform-going-forward/). The company has reaffirmed its multiplatform development strategy to shareholders in its annual report released today. "As a measure to counter the soaring costs of software development for the next-generation consoles, which has been a cause for concern, we have shifted our focus to the multiplatform strategy," the report (http://ir.capcom.co.jp/english/data/annual.html) states. Joystiq notes that this could be significant for the Wii, meaning that Capcom either plans on dropping Wii support for 'major titles', or that it's a stealth announcement that they're working on Wii versions of RE5, SF4, et al. But I disagree. Capcom never says that they're making every game across all platforms, just multiple ones. A game that appears on the 360 and PS3 is still a multiplatform game.

When you say "multiplatform," you mean "360 and PS3." I don't expect to see Devil May Cry 4 on my DS any time soon.

Hopefully they keep this just in the case of X360/PS3. Capcom, in all their awesomeness, has proven that they can develop good games on Wii. It would suck to suddenly see them either drop the prospect of developing high-profile games for the console or just port everything over from the other systems. Wii is not meant for ports. It's meant for original games, and I don't see why it should be hard to develop original games when the costs are much lower.

However, Zack & Wiki is anything but a high-profile title and it's one of the best titles out there for the Wii. So, maybe this could just be nothing really new. So far Capcom's top-tier games have appeared on the powerhouse consoles, so who would've expected a change?

Monster Hunter 3 is a major Capcom title that has been announced as a Wii exclusive; if they're really changing that then it is definitely significant for the Wii.

Monster Hunter 3 is a major Capcom title that has been announced as a Wii exclusive.

Pretty much what I thought when I first saw it a few hours ago. All majors titles will be multiplatform, except the ones that are not.

Regarding SF4 on Wii, for example, the team members have said that if they see a demand for it, they will make it. If they make it, it will be SF4 and not something like soul Calibur Legends.

If anything, this is a blow to those around here who thought Capcom was on the verge of some major Ms exclusivity arrangement.

Aren't they been bought out by MS?

Add the fact they'll bring anything to the PC after a few months, and I think you have it spot-on. Hi-rez = Hi-cost, and the best way to offset this is by offering it up to whoever will pay for it.

I wonder if this trend continues with some important publishers, could it make the 'one console future' more reasonable?

Uh... you're conflicting with the quote. They're going multi-platform because the cost of developing for next-gen consoles is too high. Wii games normally cost just as much to make as a PS2/Xbox1 game on the technical side (Marketing and other things unaccounted). Please fix the OP.

From Shacknews' write-up on it:

"All major titles launched during the next fiscal year or thereafter will be developed as multi-platform games," reads Capcom's shareholder report for its fiscal year 2008, which ended on March 31 of this year. Henceforth, Capcom will develop many of its games using its internal MT Framework technology, "an integrated development environment built to provide common development tools for Xbox 360, PS3 and PC platforms."
