Gamesarefun.com has some shots (http://www.gamesarefun.com/games/ds/finalfantasy3/NESDScomparison.jpg) comparing the original 2D version of Final Fantasy 3 to its Nintendo DS remake, which is being done entirely in 3D.
Suffice it to say, the game looks very very good. It really seems to push the DS to its limits graphics wise.

Not as long as they keep being flooded with remakes (DS) and ports (PSP). The handhelds rely on old console games a little too much for my liking. Still, this looks great.

This looks great, I'll have to preorder this soon. I've been waiting for a good old fashioned RPG on my DS for a while now.

I'm just hoping that the DS leads to the Great Rebirth of Adventure Gaming. I've been playing "Trace Memory," which I thought was pretty good but no where near what I'd like to see. "Phoenix Wright" should be great, though, I can't wait to get that. And as for remakes and ports: as long as I get a port of "Sam & Max Hit the Road" and "Day of the Tentacle," I can die happy. Oh, to play those again while waiting for the bus. That would truly be bliss.

DS games I own:
-Kirby Canvas Curse
-Meteos
-Phoenix Wright: Ace Attorney
Arguably the best games on the console are the most original ones.
This is not to mention the two best iterations of their respective series:
-Advance Wars: Dual Strike
-Castlevania: Dawn of Sorrow (Ok, I'd actually give the nod to Symphony of the Night, but damn if this isn't right up there)
I'll agree that it's real easy to repackage old material on a handheld - we saw a lot of that on GBA and even on PSP and DS - but lately all I've been playing is my DS. I think it's got a bright enough future that I'm actually gonna hold off on buying any new consoles until Revolution launches.

Phoenix Wright isn't a great adventure game - too much dialog, not enough puzzles I believe - but it's a lot of fun regardless. I'm enjoying the story far more than I thought I would and the courtroom scenes are pretty damn enjoyable.
As for old SCUMM classic games, I've got 'em on my PSP - but I'd sure love to have them on my DS. :)
:: Edit :: And now to be on topic: The graphics in those stills look quite impressive - looks similar to Final Fantasy 9 or Crystal Chronicles.
I'm pumped.

I hate to say it, but I'm more drawn to the DS for the games selection. PSP... WHERE ARE THE FUCKING RPGS??? I just can't bring myself to buy the gayest looking handheld since the virtual-boy.

If you've ever heard of SCUMMVM (http://www.scummvm.org/), it's an emulator designed to run all the old LucasArts adventure games such as Day of the Tentacle and Sam and Max. All you really need is to own the original CD, and you copy certain files from the CD to a directory to play games which would otherwise be unplayable on Windows XP. SCUMMVM has been ported to the PSP as well, so if you have a large enough memory stick, you could have Sam and Max on the go, like I have set up :D

This was a pretty nice way of forcing me to get a DS. Was hoping to hold out for the DS Advance, whenever such a thing inevitably arrives, but this will speed things up a bit.

Mastiff are apparantly on board to do an online RPG for the DS. Mastiff published La Pucelle Tactics if you remember.
and hot damn, that looks nice!

Here's a little known fact.. the DS has a very small but potent hacking comunity as well. If you have an Advance blank game cart you can boot up a ton of things.. includeing scummvm. Check it out.

I do have. Ok, now I am trading in. Sold.
Sorry, Sony, but you dropped the ball on this gamer. I can only take so much Lumines and I can get two DS games (almost) for the price of one PSP game.

Why do they have to make the characters look like the horrible character designs from the crap Crystal Chronicles? ugh...
otherwise, really looking forward to this, and the other ports/remakes. :)

I honestly have no idea why so many people have trouble running DOS games in XP. They work just fine for me without any third-party emulation.

Alright, I cleared the soda I spit at the monitor in surprise... Wow! I had zero idea the DS was that powerful. All the other titles with "3D" elements featured primitive polygons similiar to Star Fox. Those look like they were ported off a playstation.

Which, when they use a style like this with a pretty much top-down camera, is a whole lot.
I'm really glad they decided to update the game rather than just port it over. I'll be getting it for sure.

Dude, do you have no life except trolling any post on EA that talks about the DS? It seems that's the only time you ever post...
Hehe, do a search on his posts. They are not all based around the DS, yet they remain the same. Funny stuff :).

Looks golden. Still, I hope the complexity, dialogue and gameplay are more in line with a modern rpg than one of the old 8 bit rpgs. I never played the original NES version but considering the memory limitations I can't imagine it's all that deep.

It's still a remake. If they change all those things, it wouldn't be a remake.
I didn't play many of the earlier FF games. But I did play FF1 on the NES, even that I think is complex enough to be enjoyable on a handheld.

I find that less complex games are better for handheld. You can experience them in happy small douses. For instance, Yoshi's Island and Super Punch Out make great PSP train-faire

Looks like a Playstation game? Look harder. It damn well is a Playstation game :p. Look at it. I believe that the design of the game is the same graphical/combat style used for Final Fantasy 9.

Uh...FF9 was an intentional throw-back to the earlier FF games, so it would be fairly surprising if a modern remake of those games didn't resemble it.
I do feel that Square has gotten stuck on a particular aesthetic, which could use some shaking up. But I won't fault them on the art style of a game which will likely be the best looking DS game for quite some time.

Sounds like a new game to me.

I'm just looking for them to expand on the complexity to bring it more into line with recent FFs. I do admit to not having played it but I'm assuming it's on par with other 8 bit rpgs. To me, there's no point in giving it such a massive graphical overhaul without working on the other areas too. I suspect they will be doing this however.

Sure there is a huge point overhauling a game graphically that not alot of people have played. I don't know what so hard to understand about that concept. Sure it probably won't have some insanely detailed storyline with tons of facets. But it's a better remake than say a port. It's also portable and won't take you 10 min sitting there blowing into huge cartridges to get the game to start up. I'm sure alot of people would agree with you.
But again, this game never left japanese waters. It will be new to thousands of people.

Graphics will need to be backed up by a deeper gameplay experience. The story line doesn't need to change (the storyline of many rpgs is quite similar after all) but it can be expanded upon with additional animated cut scenes, and dialogue. New classes could be added, enhance the character growth options (like the ffx sphere system), tweak the battle mode (borrow from ffxii?). All sorts of possibilities.
Most people who play older games play them for nostalgia. To capture new players you need to offer an experience that is on par with similar games on the market.

It made the characters too generic, and it was the most abstract method of leveling up I've ever seen. Heck you had to collect items just to gain something from leveling up after a while. I'd rather have them just keep the systems the same as they were back then rather than adding some of the complex experimental stuff they've been tossing in there these days.

Ya... saw that before. But I was looking for something more along the lines of Disgaea, but portable. That particular game is going to be very, very different. That's not a bad thing, just not what I was looking for in a PSP killer-app.
