'Doom' day arrives (http://news.yahoo.com/s/usatoday/20051019/en_usatoday/doomdayarrives) is an article on Yahoo! news, talking about the Friday release of The Rock's DOOM movie.
At a time when Hollywood is losing ground with young male moviegoers, what better way to lure them in than a science-fiction/horror action movie based on one of their favorite activities, video games?
Doom, which opens Friday and stars Dwayne Johnson, aka The Rock, is not based on just any video game. Doom is considered the most influential game ever; it popularized the first-person shooter genre when it arrived in 1993. Since then, game maker id Software has sold 10 million Doom games; the latest is Doom 3: Resurrection of Evil.
But young men won't be enough to make this R-rated movie a hit. "The most successful horror pictures play mostly to females," says Brandon Gray, president and publisher of Box Office Mojo.
He expects Doom's upper limit of success to be that of 2002's Resident Evil ($40 million).I really had no interest in this until I saw the trailers with the FPS sequences. Now it seems like a "Must see", just to see those wild FPS sections.

Just in time, I got DOOM 3: Resurrection of Evil for the Xbox yesterday.

From the trailer, it struck me as paying $7.50 to watch someone else play the game, except that the weapons don't look so horribly-bluescreened in the game. :p
I'll wait for some reviews, then not see it anyway.

Doom is an example of why the Rock will continue to be a big star in Hollywood for years to come. His movies recieve tons of press for his involvement as though wrestling was still the hottest fad going and he handles himself better in promotion than just about anyone. You will not see Dwayne Johnson jumping on a couch, yelling at Matt Laurer, getting into street fights or being photgraphed using cocaine. What you will see him is speaking in a more glib and articulate manner on every talk show in existence than any other professional athlete - which is filled with those who can barely form a sentence and shy men not used to having to deliver anything but a functional statement. Signing Rock to your film should be listed under the marketing expenses.
The fact that Rock draws some additional fans to the theaters and is a pretty decent actor is simply bonus.

Yeah, The Rock has really suprised me with his skill as an actor. I really beleive that if he were given some more serious roles, instead of just the "big meathead" role, he would shine. To hear myself say that is almost enough to make my brain melt down, but its true.

I would have to say that portion of the trailer was a real turn off. The fact its not sticking to the demons from Hell storyline was the first turn off, but something I could possibly live with. But seeing the FPS scenes in the trailers was a major turn off. That is probably the stupiest thing I've seen.
I just think it comes across as really stupid. Hey, its a FPS game, lets add some FPS scenes. They might as well put the HUD up there as well, from the first DOOM with the dude's little head taking damage.

Despite all the nay-saying, it still looks like it could be good popcorn fun to go see... as long as they don't OVER-DO the 1st-person stuff...
If they pretty much keep it to what we've seen inthe commercials, they should be okay. But if every other fight is gonna be chock-full of 1st-person stuff, it'll get cheesy (well, cheesy-ER, at any rate) fast.

The FPS shot looked kinda cool from the trailer, it also depends on what part of the movie it goes like that.
Lets say it goes all FPS when the main character trips balls and flips out, starts running around and gunning down whatever moves, it could be intersting.
I will be seeing Doom, possibly while too drunk to stagger on my own... but I will see it all right.

Goo Drugs, They Will Make Up For This Movie.
See thats part of being an adult kids, you can do drugs by your own choice and by your own moderation which means your completely responsible for your actions and for your own amount and use ect of what ever your poison is. To say that adults havent been using drugs to make their lives enjoyable is really false, like you should wonder why beer is so adbundant?. Obvious reason is that people like to get fucked up because life is pretty shallow.
No way in hell will I waste $10.25 on this mess.

It cost 6.50 with a student ID here in Houston. Also people, I here the whole human mutant thing was somewhat scrapped. Not removed totally but these are supposed to be demons. I don't thing Hell is mentioned as the place of origin but I mean humans don't turn into pinky demons. It in the trailers to through you off. Just like the movie folks realized it better be on Mars and not some planet x in galaxy y. I'm also interested in seeing how the FPS sequence plays out and how it looks actually within a movie.
The Rock is a pretty decent actor. Atleast after watching Rundown. And he really tries to make the best with what he ends up acting in, but seriously, fire your agent. You don't need to take every fucking job that comes your way. Some of them he really should skip.

I think alcohol is so abundant in our society not because life is so shallow, but life is so hard. Success in life (wether you define success as weath or personal satisfaction) is an extremely difficult task to accomplish. You have to want it and you have to work at it. It doesn't just come to you and even most of the people who are "overnight success stories" slaved away at their craft (writing, sports, acting, business, etc.) for an entire lifetime before their big break.
In this country everyone has the opportunity to be a success, but not without putting in that effort. It is way easier to just medicate yourself into numbness and forget (even if only for a short time) that you should be spending your time on something important.
Oh, and it tastes good. ;)
---
Like the Resident Evil films, I don't think you can really take this movie seriously and it doesn't take itself seriously. It looks like they did a good job with the special effects and the actors did the best they could with the script (and in The Rock's case) their limited acting talents.
Sometimes a cheezy movie is just fun. Did anyone here see Stealth? That movie just freaking bombed at the box office, but it just ROCKS. (If you will forgive the pun.) 90 minutes of CGI plane to plane combat and Jessica Biel in a bikini? How could you not love it?
I like a good movie as much as the next guy, but sometimes "well done and entertaining" is just as much fun as "good".

Nah, it will be hillarious. Plus, who the fuck spends 9.50 for a movie?
Somebody who lives someplace cheaper than where I do. It's $10 for a movie here.
So, here's my concern. Apparently, they originally approached the Rock about being "the main guy", but he preferred the role of Sarge instead. So now Karl Urban is "the main guy". It seems, however, that the Rock is still very much the star of this movie and we hardly ever see anything about Urban in trailers or anything.
So, my question is, is this just a marketing ploy to feed off of the Rock's popularity, while in the movie the action really centers around the hero of the story? Or have they further twisted the Doom story around to make it center on Sarge who will surely be turned into some kind of demon by the end?
EDIT: I guess you can hit a matinee for $6.50 here. Student discounts don't apply to me anymore, though.

Here's a new review (http://www.cinematical.com/2005/10/20/review-doom/) by Cinematical. Keep in mind that this is a review from the standpoint of a non-gamer.
Doom isn’t operatically bad; it’s just derivative, inert and dull – it feels like the third sequel to a film that never existed. Even The Rock – a screen presence (I’m not going to hurt myself by stretching to call him an actor) who’s proven he has the goods in films like the far superior action-burger The Rundown – can’t bring things to life, even with the relish he brings to saying nonsense like “Semper Fi, Motherfucker!”

I'm just looking for a fun, mindless action movie with a few cheesy one liners here and there. Give me that, a giant BFG explosion and some chainsaw action. I'll be happy.

She is as good as she can possibly be given the material, but can't help the fact that she is responsible for trying to make sense of what amounts to a contrived reason to get monsters up and walking so the men can mow 'em down.
This is from IGN's review, which is pretty helpful over all. My question is, does making the monsters SOMEHOW come from genetic experiments gone wrong really work better than just saying "these are demons from hell"?

I'll definitely be seeing Doom!
And the big hunky Rock is in it.
Man, my balls tingle at the sight of that man.

FINALLY! Man, I fucking love you Evil, both as the only other person on this earth to love Stealth and as an erotic partner, naturally.
I have never laughed so hard and be so entertained by a movie in my entire life. The action was actually quite kick ass, and the dialogue and acting was pure comic genius. My favourite line of the movie was actually courtesy of the plane (as most were), when they were chasing after him and he wimpers out "leave me alone". Haha, makes me giggle just thinking about it.
Anyways, 36% from Rotten Tomatoes is actually pretty good, if you look at most movie critics and realize that the movie isn't geared towards a demographic anywhere close to what they are (ie. crusty elitist scrooges....... err sorry couldn't resist). Regardless, I'll be there this weekend, and even if I don't enjoy it (highly doubtful), at least I'll be supporting a video game movie that a) tries something different and b) isn't made by our buddy Dr. Bol.

Totally agree. I've heard some question that the FPS sequence and call it stupid, but it looks like a riot to me. I can't wait to check it out.
Also, while I love that Doom is rated R, I'm wondering how much that'll hurt the film's bottom line. They could've brought in a lot more young people if they'd made it PG-13. I'm surprised they didn't compromise on that one, but also selfishly happy.

Times that by two, because I would have to bring my girlfriend along too.
$20.50 to see any movie of choice. Add popcorn($6.50 for a large bucket) and soda ($5.50 x 2 large)... and the movies become a very expensive place to spend 2 hours.
2 hours ends up costing me $38.00. That's a bit too much money to spend on a movie I might not enjoy.

That's exactly how I feel. I go to a movie to enjoy something because it looks good, to experience a story or setting that really grabs me. I go to comedies to laugh my ass off. I don't to go to serious action movies to laugh at how stupid they are. That, in essence, makes you stupid for paying cash money for a ticket. Wait until the piece of shit is on DVD in a month and rent it if you have to. Supporting box-office tripe is like sprinking fertilizer on weeds.

Actually, the prices are that high because that's where theaters have to make their money. Y'see, theaters have to sign contracts before they can show a movie...and these contracts usually state that, for the first week or two, the vast majority of the ticket money taken in has to go back to the studio. It varies from distributor to distributor, but it's typically anywhere from 40-80%. After the first couple weeks, the theater can then claim the profits from the tickets themselves...but at that point, attendance has already dropped significantly.
This is why food prices are so high. Theaters have to make their money somwhere, because they don't get much of anything from the ticket sales. The prices are skyhigh because they need to make a profit off of that, because they're definitely not going to get it from the tickets. It's this "sick cycle of stupidity" that allows these theaters to stay open, enabling you to view movies and complain about prices.

One horrific scene involved Johnson's character (Sarge) walking through a floor of dead bodies. They weren't standard dummies: they were amputees hired to play dead for a more realistic effect.
"A hundred of them everywhere ... between makeup and prosthetics, it looked like their arms, bodies were yanked off," he says.

That's not my fault. Popcorn should not be 6 bucks a bag, and nearly 10 for a large. Soda shouldn't be 5 bucks (unless it's 10 liters), a box of candy the same. Duped people pay these prices and I don't, so I guess it all evens out. But what I don't understand is this: there are a few "cheapseats" locales still here in Maine, and sometimes they have dollar nights even when movies are brand spanking new. The prices on food are not exorbitant like at other "big" places, yet they somehow stay in business. A few drive-ins also remain and offer reasonable snacks and 5 dollar admissions to Double Features of brand new movies. Yes, some of these theaters are not the best or state of the art, but they get the job done, with a could year old audio equipment, some stained floors, etc.
How are they still in business, when they charge less for movie tickets and less for food?

So if everyone stops buying food at the theater, the movie industry collapses?
No no, I don't think so. Even IF this is roughly the current state of affairs, a sudden loss of food revenue would cause them to rework the sales model, not destory the film industry.

I never said it would collapse the industry, but theaters would definitely have a very hard time pulling in a profit. The food is what pays the bills for most theaters.

Yeah, I know. I hail from the County, after all.
At the crappy theater up here, we have dollar nights every Sunday...but that's because the Student Senate at my University has a contract with the theater. The theater gets a rather large sum of money for very little. I'd bet quite a few places in Maine have sponsored dollar nights; there really wouldn't be any other way for it to work out financially.

Because they pay next to nothing for the prints, keep far more of the ticket price, and generally have lower overhead (smaller theaters, less sophisticated equipment, fewer employees, etc.). They also have the advantage of knowing what movies will bring in viewers (first-run theaters have to guess) and they have more flexibility with scheduling (first-run theaters are frequently required to show a movie for a certain number of weeks no matter how successful or unsuccessful it is, may be required to show it on a certain number of screens, and may be required to show it a certain number of times per day). Even then, most second-run theaters are barely profitable and more and more of them are going out of business as the theater-to-video window continues to shrink.

Even then, most second-run theaters are barely profitable and more and more of them are going out of business as the theater-to-video window continues to shrink.
I disagree. There is a $0.50 movie theater here in northern Orlando that plays movies that were out about two to three months ago. They do very well, even when the movie is released on DVD. They make almost all their income from their snack bar, but they don't charge alot for what is available either. We also have two other discount theaters nearby... One that charges $1.50 for the near the same line up at the $0.50 theater and another that charges $3.00 for first run movies & art films... All three theaters do very well. The reason is the snack bars where they also charge lower fairs which draws more $15K to $25K per year customers.
Movie $0.50 (Stealth)
Popcorn Large $2.00
Cherry Pepsi Large $1.50
Not too bad!

Nah, go student discount and bring in a bottle of water. You and yo' girl will run 12-13 bucks and you wont clog any arteries on the way out.
That's a good, healthy man. Kudos.
The problem is, if you are on a newish date, you don't want to appear cheap so you have to splurge on concessions. Some girls will say they don't want anything (which is great and somewhat considerate, especially if you just came from dinner) but some fucking idiot whores will go up there and order a large everything from their menu and many boxes of candy to boot. Deep down you always have to think whether or not the bitch is worth it: are you going to get laid tonight, do you want a real relationship with this girl, or would it just be cheaper to leave her ass there and go buy a hooker.
