If you want to get your hands on an XBox 360 controller before the system ships you can. IGN (http://xbox360.ign.com/articles/659/659804p1.html) is reporting the XBox 360 controller for Windows is available in retail outlets right now for a staggering $44.99. The difference between this controller and the XBox 360 Controller? I'm guessing the driver CD.

Why the hell is this so damn expensive? Anyway, it's a good way to check out the controller, and I guess if you are in the market for a PC Gamepad and plan on getting a 360....but $44.99!!!

That does seem like a lot to pay, but aren't quality PC pads (especially MS branded ones) always a bit expensive?

Yea, I saw this around a few days ago and thought it was silly. With the markup that must be on that controller, looks like Micrsoft is just milking anyone who want's to be "cool" by having a 360 controller before everyone else.

Odd. According to 1up (http://www.1up.com/do/newsStory?cId=3144898), the MSRP is $39.99. IGN just got ripped off by Best Buy! :D

It does seem a bit pricey anyway, but I've heard from a few people that it's a helluvalot more comfortable than most other gamepads.

Needs to be wireless and include that mini-keyboard.

Damnit I think the hype is getting to me because I'm starting to wan't a 360 now... I was really planning on NOT getting one of these systems.... I'm a computer gamer damnit!!

It's got a wire? Otherwise I'd consider it. My Logitech wireless is good enough.

You can buy a good wired PC game pad for under $20. The 360 hype has actually lessened my interest. I'll wait for the first price drop. The units should be easy to find then, and games will be plentiful.

I agree, the hype and overpriced accessories are a turn off. Im going to wait on this one and not pay the premium of early adoptation.

Well, it had a wire when they announced it a few months ago, and yes, it has a wire now. I'm not sure what you all expected them to do other than to include a USB receiver, which would have just upped the cost and made the receiver worthless for the Xbox 360.

By the way, the $49.99 ($44.95 + S&H maybe?) price tag was the MSRP Microsoft slapped on it when they announced their new line of mice.

Sorry. I don't follow pre-release computer gamepad accessories as closely as I should and I missed that announcement a few months ago. I'm sure I'm the only one though.

That was sarcasm.

Right. I just didn't expect there to be so much drama over a wire.

I actually would love to try this out, with my Call of Duty 2 demo. I pre-ordered CoD2 for the 360 after seeing some footage of it, and how it compared to my PC (my little 6600 GT has nothing on the 360 GPU, it turns out) and decided to try it on the prettier platform.

Problem is, I'm a die hard mouse/keyboard guy especially when it comes to FPS games. I've heard great things about the 360 controller though, so maybe it's time I just got better with the FPS/Controller deal.

Still, playing the CoD2 demo on my PC with that controller would help me decide if I wanted to keep my pre-order or not, but then again, the damn controller costs as much as CoD2 will anyway, so I'll just have to see what happens.

Plus, who plays PC games with a controller? Some folks do, I know, but I'm thinking of the games I'm playing currently, and I don't see it happening.

It kinda looks like the DC controller. Especially sideways.
Ah, the dreamcast. Best console name ever.

The guy who wrote the piece is an idiot. He can't take pictures on an automatic digital camera and he isn't smart enough to use scissors properly to open the (really annoying) packaging.

I recently bought a USB adapter for my Xbox game pads for my PC. Total cost? Something like $10. It's got a funky name, and looks cheap, but I haven't had any problems playing my games. It even supports force feedback and plugging 2 Xbox controllers in at once.

As far as I know, the Xbox360 controller doesn't add anything new, so I'll just stick to using my Xbox controllers. I'll put that money towards Shadow of the Colossus instead.

MS has confirmed (a few months back) that the only difference between the $40 one that will ship next month and the $45 one is an included driver CD, which can be downloaded at MS' website.

I second the blurry pictures. How hard is it to take a picture? I feel like I'm looking at UFO photos.

It would be the first good driving controller for the PC, if the analog index finger buttons actually work... I would gladly pay $45 for the PC controller if I wasn't switching to an X360 to get my "drive" on...

Yeah, I had $50 down on a 360 full-package, but after wading through the hype I realized I can live without most of the launch titles and my PC will run Oblivion just fine, so I cancelled it and got my money back.

As I recall, the second revision of the original XBOX was far quieter and a bit more reliable than the intial XBOX anyway. I'll happily await Halo 3 or the first price drop, whichever comes first.

Microsoft must have decided that jacking the prices WAY WAY up on accessories is the way to go this time around.

This $45 price is ridiculous, but just remember that the wireless controllers on the Xbox 360 are $50, the 20 gig HD is $100, the wireless adapter is $100, etc. Every single accessory is very much overpriced. Heck the silly faceplates are something like $15 - luckily they add nothing to the experience and thus probably won't sell all that much.

Apple makes a ton of money off iPod accessories. $20 for a tiny molded piece of plastic errrr docking station? Only natural that others to follow suit.

By inflating the prices during launch you can be assured that those who deam extras a necessity will shell out the cash for them. Also, when sales start to peter down, you can hold a big sale (Since you are, in theory, still recieving a large profit since the profit margin was so high originally) and watch those who waited flock out to sieze the oppertunity.

Also, please note that low prices sometimes hurt sales of items. People have a tendency to believe that a low, nonsale price is demeaning and indictitive of the quality of the item.

Speaking of which, I caught an article on Reuters (or maybe it was C|NET News) saying that Apple wanted to raise their royalty intake on third-party accessories. I think people would *really* be surprised to see how much large corporations like Apple and Microsoft depend on the accessories being sold.

And yes, the Docking Station is ridiculous. To think that they went from giving it away for free to selling it for $20 is just... yeah, ridiculous.

I thought that was discussed on Page 2? The only reason anyone would want to pay the $5 is to (A) get the controller now without having to wait for the console to come out and/or (B) to get the driver CD so that you don't have to download the drivers from Microsoft. What I think people are complaining about is the price of the Xbox 360 controller vs. the price of other console controllers, not the fact that the wired controller for the PC costs $5 more.

Just my $5.

The only thing I really think that is way over priced is the wireless adapter. Otherwise the 20GIG HD isn't something standard at all. I would bet the markup on it isn't as big as everyone thinks.

Someone brought this point up to me earlier today, when the PS2/XBox launched, their controllers were 39.99 new. So really, this isn't anything different. It's just we've all forgetten there was a price drop on the accessories during the generation.

why 44.95+? the same reason that idiot politicians/presidents get elected, cuz there's always enough stupid idiots out there to buy their sh*t.

Yep, and I think those prices are very inflated too. Hence why I don't own an iPod. ;)

I once thought that this was the case, but then Wal-Mart and it's mostly low quality shite came along and proved me wrong.

Actually the PS2 controllers were $30 at launch. The Gamecube's were $30 as well and quickly dropped to $20. The Wavebird debuted at $35 and is now $30 at most places, while the Xbox wireless controller is debuting at $50! The Xbox controllers were the only ones to cost $40 at launch, and you can bet I thought that was ridiculous as well. I still bought them (shamefully), but I won't be making that mistake again.

Heck, I'm probably going to be limiting myself to a Revolution this round simply because it won't (assumably) cost me an arm and a leg. Wireless built in, controllers shouldn't cost as much as a new game, etc. Of course the first party titles will be great too, so that doesn't hurt.

I just can't afford to spend a lot of money on games these days, and when new controllers cost as much as new games, and new games are going up $10 or more sometimes to boot, I have to opt myself out. :(

it's pretty much the same price as a normal xbox controller...my dog ate a few of my stypes, picked up 2 it was close to a hundred bucks. So I'm used to paying this price.
