id Software might not be for sale, but you can take home any of their titles for 50% off this weekend via Valve's Steam (http://www.steampowered.com/v/index.php) service.

This weekend only on Steam, id Software games are 50% off. This includes the id Super Pack for only $34.99 (over $200 worth of games). Or take 50% off individual titles such as Doom, Quake, Wolfenstein, Commander Keen, Heretic, and Hexen. Offer ends Monday, September 8.

Wow, I might have to bust out the credit card and pick up the Super Pack. I probably wouldn't buy it for $70, but $35 is a steal! I'm sure I'd get around to playing some of them eventually, and reliving Doom and Hexen could be fun. ;)

Damn you, Steam! I just bought the X-Com pack yesterday, and now I'm considering the id Super Pack, even though I already own most of the games. I would be getting a lot of mission packs I haven't played, plus there's the convenience of having everything in Steam...

I really shouldn't do it.

I have been thinking of playing DOOM 3 again. We should do a DOOM 3 multiplayer session one Friday night.

If it is something you think people would want to play, I would say, "Yes."

For $35.00 getting all those id Software games seemed like a steal.

That's a lot of games for 35 bucks, even in the absence of the abundant mission/expansion packs. I went through the steps once, thought don't be stupid, but came back again after 15 minutes to pull the trigger.

My first non-adventure PC games were Commander Keen shareware games on my grandpa's computer. Considering his demeanor, it's a wonder he ever let me screw around on his beloved DOS box. I spent months eyeing an elaborately designed ad for Doom II in a catalog before begging my friend to let me copy the game from his floppies (which he never did).

Sweet, sweet gravy of nostalgia!

lol, why even debate it? the deal is so fucking good...it's like when they sold Bioshock for 15 dollars...why even think about it? (unless you had previously purchased it)

The only downer with id games on Steam is that games with CD music will not include the music (ie, Quake and Quake II for sure). I think there's a way to make it work if you have the original CDs or download the music, but I'm fairly sure that the games don't come with it.

That said, I was going to buy Doom 3 for $20 shortly anyway, may as well spend an extra $15 and get a whole bucket of games with it ; )

That sounds like fun. I actually never played the retail release of Doom 3. I only played the demo.

Doh! I bought them for $70, although that was a few months ago. Still think it was worth it though.

Just a word of caution for those of you thinking about this for the Quake 2 mission packs: they are bugged (save games become corrupt). There have been a small outcry about the lack of support on this issue on the Steam Quake forums some time ago. Although the bug is supposed to be rare, I got it both at the install I tested played at work and my install at home...

Anyways, there is PLENTY in that packet to justify $35. This is the deal of a lifetime!

Hmm...I'll have to give that a try. I have the Quake cd around here somewhere. If I recall correctly, when setting up GL Quake and trying to get max FPS, you could copy over the music files to the hard drive, so it wouldn't stream them off the cd.

If you're a newer computer game fan and are curious what the fuss is or just never got around to playing the id games, this is probably the best chance you'll ever get to play them legitimately and see firsthand (at least mostly) how seminal these series are in game history. Don't pass it up if you're wondering about it, and keep in mind the year each one was released as you go through it.

Is it possible to buy an expansion pack for one of these games and use it with a non-Steam main game? I never got around to getting Team Arena because I didn't want to pay full price for what was basically a mod that should have been included in Quake 3, but now that it's 9 bucks and Quake Live is just around the corner, I'm interested in brushing up a bit.

I dont think you can even buy an expansion without having the original game :(

$2.49 for Commander Keen 1-5? That's $0.50 per game. I feel like I'd be stupid not to do that.

I already have everything on the list except for some of the expansion packs. Too bad the Doom 3 expansion does not work with the boxed version. At that price I would have purchased it.

The first Hexen was a lot of fun back in the day. It's VERY dated now, but I had a great time playing through it over and over as a kid. It's even more fun in co-op, something my friend and I did a lot of in the N64 version. We'd usually end up killing each other after a short while. ;)

Edit - I forgot to add that the ending to Hexen is extremely lame.

Way to drop a nostalgia bomb on me. Damn steam and their amazing sale. Had to pick it up. I would have been kicking myself in the ass for weeks if I didn't. I remember playing these games on my first real computer and at the boys and girls club after I had my homework completed or read for 30 minutes. God those were the days.

I will say that it was worth picking this up just to have all the official .WAD files to stick into the Doomsday Engine (http://www.doomsdayhq.com/) and play Doom, Doom2, Heretic, Hexen, etc etc in glorious 1280x1024 with mouselook, dynamic lighting and shadows, particle effects, etc etc. The excellent level design manages to shine that much more when you bring the graphics and interface more up to speed.

Highly, highly recommended for anybody who picks this up.
