Next Generation (http://www.next-gen.biz/) has posted a blurb regarding the announcement (http://www.next-gen.biz/index.php?option=com_content&task=view&id=1379&Itemid=2) of a new PSP bundle entitled, the PSP Giga Pack that is due out in November.

The $299 bundle includes the PSP System, a 1GB Memory Stick Pro Duo, battery pack, AC adaptor, USB Cable, and PSP Stand. The company also announced that a PSP branded 1GB Memory Stick PRO Duo will also be sold separately later this calendar year. The PSP Giga Pack will come pre-installed with the PSP Firmware 2.0.
Sony couldn't offer this now when I am tempted to buy the system before heading on a long trip?

Long trip and PSP don't go together.

No? Short battery life all in all? I am better off sticking with my laptop?

Depends on what your trip is like ;) I still swear by a GBA for long trips when recharging is not an option.

But if you carry a laptop.. why bother with a PSP ;) Get Space Rangers (http://pc.ign.com/objects/679/679595.html) and be happy!

Wow, how stupid are the people at Sony? Instead of doing something silly like LISTENING and lowering the price of the PSP they offer a HIGHER priced package? Am I the only one who thinks they are nuking futs?

the batteries in my gp32 last hours and hours.

In terms of this deal, well it sounds ok-ish but for the same price i could possibly buy an xbox360 in this country?

$300 for a handheld? With no game?

HA.

My thoughts exactly. I was hoping they dropped the price or at least just offered the system without a bunch of other BS. The only reason I'd even consider a PSP is the upcoming GTA: Liberty City Stories, but even then I'm not persuaded. I just can't see spending that much for a portable game system. Yeah, yeah, yeah, it plays movies and music too. Great. I could get a 30GB iPod for $299 if I wanted to listen to music. I wanna play games dammit. I'm just not sure I want to play PS2 games away from home, especially for what it costs.

My PSP battery typically lasts 4 hours or more. Certainly longer than I can stare at it in one sitting. If all else fails, get the car adapter. No big deal.

Longest I've got on my PSP with no charge was about 6 or 7 hours of playtime including watching some vids off the memory stick.

Shortest was a marathon session of Lumines that lasted about 3.5 to 4 hours.

Well, this certainly addresses one of the PSP's problems: expensive storage media. Including a 1GB stick instead of the paltry 32MB stick makes the PSP more of an all-purpose media machine out of the box. Yeah, it's $50 more, but most users were going to spend at least $50 more on a bigger memory stick anyway, and $50 gets you a lot less than 1GB no matter where you shop for memory. It's a better package compared to the previous one.

The implication is that they're reasonably happy with the number of PSPs they're selling and don't feel a need to drop the price yet. They know they're not really selling PSPs to kids' parents, after all, so the math is probably different for the PSP than it is for other consoles (especially handhelds). It's similar to the XBox 360's packages - are you willing to pay more up front for something better at a mild discount?

Never heard of that game before, I'll have to look into it.
As far as a driving factor in getting a PSP is due to being a GTA whore.

It's funny... I have no interest in the portable GTA game... and thus I have no interest in a PSP. Weird how that works.
(Just as strange, it seems the lack of pirates cause global warming (http://www.venganza.org/piratesarecool4.jpg)...)

I'm just tempted to get a used PSP for 199. But as I've said before, there are really no games out that I MUST play. Now the DS, that's another story. I love that thing!

Lookout! If you are a GTA whore, someone will kick the everlovin' crap out of you as soon as you get out of the car. They'll have gotten their health back and all your money!

Seriously:

Overall, this is a completely retarded move by Sony. Instead of moving more units into the field, they seem to think they can still take on Apple and the iPod. The PSP is no iPod, and it never will be.

If Sony LOWERED the price, it would have more units in the hands of consumers who would then buy games for it. Games are where Sony makes the money. (Sony makes tons of money off of UMD movies too, but I'll give the general populace the benefit of the doubt and pretent that people overall are too smart to buy such trash.)

As it turns out, Sony CAN'T lower the price any more. They are already throwing money away with each unit, looking to move production to China to cut costs.

Now they've got themselves in a pickle: can't lower price, GBA and DS kicking ass on the games front, Apple scooping up people interested n mobile video. That leaves the PSP in an awkward situation with very few strengths except a bunch of old PSP ports.

Actually this thing is a bargain. Normally a 1GB duo pro stick would run you $80-$100. You need a decent sized mem stick cuz the save games on some games are getting a tad large :P. They took out the remote control which was nice though not a great thing. I wish they had kept the soft case as I'm somewhat paranoid of my PSP getting scraches as it is. Not sure what the heck the 'stand' is supposed to be for though.

My suspicions for including a 1GB stick is they are going to expand their downloadable game kiosks or perhaps even make them available online. Having a userbase with a 1GB stick will make this initiative more successful I imagine.

The PSP really needs a 'killer game' at this point. The DS lineup was on par with the PSP lineup in that it was fairly weak up until the release of Nintendogs and the "Brain" series in Japan.

On a personal note I kinda wish they'd bring something like SD Gundam Generations or Super Robo Wars to the PSP. I'd snag that up in an instant

Well, you would have to wait until at least november before you could pickup a Giga Pack.

Haha, man, Sony sure is clever. They're actually shipping these with only 2.0 firmware instead of trying to enforce the 2.1 or 2.5 updates that haven't been cracked yet.

And including a 1GB memory stick is just like inviting the pirates over to your house.

Some may see this as a means to increase the install base... but so what? Sony can only profit from game software, not hardware. Except their ridiculously overpriced memory sticks, of course.

Meh. Save your cash.

I'm using my PSP as trade in on an X360. It still holds pretty good value and at least that way I can get *something* out of it.

I want to echo the outrage that they are increasing the price of this thing and STILL not including a game. They should at least throw some crap first party title in there.

I am about 90% sure I want to get a handheld for Xmas. The decision is getting easier every day. This holiday season I will be able to purchase a DS with Mario Kart, Advance Wars, Castlevania, Animal Crossing, & Meteos for about the same price as I can buy a PSP with no games. What would you do????

Way to fuck over your consumers, Sony. They are basically offering the 1gb stick for $50 and putting the middle finger to everyone else who currently owns a PSP. Nice. Then again, it's nothing new from Sony.

Yet, I keep buying their stuff! Why? WHY!? *bangs head on desk*

Right now my PSP went from dust collector to get major usage. Far more than my DS ever got. Thank you firmware downgrader! I now have my old SNES collection back. I do need a bigger memory card though, as switching ROMs off and on is a bit annoying. Also, I want to try some of my old Genesis titles. They deserve better than living in my closet.

Also, there is the actual possibility of good games in the future that are actually for the machine. Go PSP!

Whine all you want. $50 for a 1gig memory stick is a great deal and the PSP is a fun system. There's several fun games out already for it and there's more coming. If you prefer the DS, swell. There's lots of good games for that also.

Personally, I've really enjoyed the PSP and can't wait for some of the upcoming games like GTA, SSX (which I think is already out but not sure), Socom, Pursuit Force, MGA2, and of course the new Nippon Ichi game.

When is the US release date for this? EDIT: Christmas it seems. Hopefully it can be downgraded from 2.00 to the 1.50 firmware.

There's a DS version coming.

I'm not really sure why they're bothering, though. Seems like a bad idea to me.

I would without a doubt buy the PSP giga bundle over the DS and 5 games....but cant because I already own a PSP!

With the PSP and 1 GB stick, you can play literally anything, even GameBoy Advance games. You can even load 2-4 UMD games on to the 1GB memory stick. When on the go with a PSP, no need to carry bulky games like the DS.

$300 for the ultimate multimedia portable bundle? Absolutely worth every damn penny. And don't compare the PSP to the iPod, frick the iPod can only play music - and for a $300 iPod you can do nothing but what, listen to 1000 songs? Now the iPod is clearly the biggest waste of $$$.

This is probably the best reply in this entire thread. As much as I like the PSP, Sony is making a mistake by not offering a PSP for less than $250.

Tell me about it, I'm still pissed they're charging $150 for a PS2 when I had to pay twice that back in 2001.

Welcome to the world of buying stuff. This isn't just consumer electronics, this happens with everything. I don't understand how this can surprise you. Do you expect them to mail you a free 1gig memory stick or something?

As a consolation prize, you got to enjoy your PSP for months longer than anyone who gets in on this deal did.
