Activision sends along word that Raven Software's new DOOM 3-engine shooter, Quake 4, is now hitting store shelves.
The Global Defense Force has been given the green light to invade the Strogg home planet as id Software and Activision, Inc. announced today that Quake 4 for the PC has shipped. The long-awaited sequel to Quake II, Quake 4 enlists gamers in the role of Matthew Kane, a member of the legendary Rhino Squad, to penetrate deep into the heart of the Strogg war machine and engage in a series of heroic missions to destroy the barbaric alien race. Quake 4 for the PC is available at retail outlets nationwide for a suggested retail price of $49.99. Additionally, fans can purchase the Quake 4 Special DVD Edition for a suggested retail price of $59.99, which includes Quake II, the Quake II expansion packs, and exclusive behind-the-scenes content. Both versions carry an "M" (Mature) rating by the ESRB.

The long awaited sequel to Quake II? Am I missing something here?
I'm pretty sure Quake 3 had no story, just multiplayer. I think...

You can't exactly say that Quake 3 Arena had a stunning single player storyline akin to Quake 2. Well, I use that terminology loosely.

Yeah, this story picks up where Q2 left off. Q3 had nothing to do with the previous Quakes.

and the original quake nothing to do with the second one either.
Apparantly the multiplayer in this is just fantastic, i cant wait, i was an avid Q3A player afew years ago.
i wonder why the Canadian date is two days after the states though?

I guess it'd be too easy to make a "Canadians are slow, eh?" joke...that, and I was born in Ottawa.

This is the first id game I have no intention of buying. Nothing I've heard about this game has really got me interested and I was not a fan of Doom 3 so I guess I'll move onto something else.

The special edition just comes with Quake 2? I know Q1 doesn't follow the same storyline, but why not include it?

Excuse me for being cruel, but what lick of difference does it make? No one likes the idea of buying Quake 4 for $49.99, let alone buying the friggen Super Special Edition Collector's Package for an additional $10. If you don't believe me, go look at the Console Gold review thread that was made earlier today.

heh. The original Quake barely had anything to do with itself.

Oh come on now! Blasting down everything in sight and eventually killing Criton made perfect sense!

The special edition just comes with Quake 2?
Quake 2
Quake 2: The Reckoning
Quake 2: Ground Zero
A "making of" video thingy
1 DVD instead of 4 CDs
Probably not worth the $10 pricetag, especially if you still have your Q2\TR\GZ discs. Which I do. But I bought it anyhow. /me is weak.

Yeah I'll buy the special version just to get it on DVD same as I did F.E.A.R. and same as i'll do for any other game that gives me the option.
Note: F.E.A.R. (SP Fps of the year...in the bag baby!)

This is a Raven game, not id- so your record still stands ;)

From the other thread on this game...
Whatever you do STAY FAR AWAY from the DVD edition. I got a deal on it that I wish I never got. For some odd reason under XP it sets the files/folders up with no-one having permission to them. The only way it would work after installing was to take ownership of the files/folders and set it up so you have full permissions, did I mention it also sets them up as read only. Fun Fun.
Great quality control guys... At least the Q2 games that come with the DVD edition installed fine.

I hope they fixed the multiplayer from Doom 3, you can play more than 4 players now right?
I'm pretty sure Quake 3 had no story, just multiplayer. I think...
Actually, quake 3 left off where Q2 ended. The story at the start is that the sarge (you) is surrounded by all the angry strog and you run out of ammo. You get your knife and get ready for hand to hand, but as you dive to fight, you get transported to a world where people fight in tournaments.
When you beat Q3... i suppose you... win the tournament!
This also explains why the sarge suddenly disapears after Q2 and theres no trace of him in Q4.

Well, that doesn't mean that q3 had a story, does it?
I liked the look of the cyber good dudes in the screenshots. I'll give it a try.

I liked Quake 4's multiplayer when it was called Quake 3.

People still play regular deathmatch multiplayer?
Stormwatcher
10-19-2005, 03:32 PM
nope, everyone is playing things like CS, DoD, BF2, UT2k4...

Well I just beat Quake 4. It was maybe a seven hour job.
Oh, and I wouldnt put all those games into one category- I know you arent, but it should be noted that those are all very different multiplayer games. The only one of which I play now is BF2 (CS just got old after playing it for six years. Oh, and after it got turned into shit by Valve).

I prefer Desert Combat to BF2.
I prefer Quake 2/3 to UT2kxx
I prefer CS 1.x
Maybe I'm just 'old skool' but there feels like something is missing in these newer games. Or just bolted on in a haphazard fashion that isn't really completed until 3 years down the line when the add-on packs come out and it's been patched until it's so far gone that it's almost a different game. Q3:A PR1.31 for example.

Oh, I don't play any of those... except for some ocasional single player rounds of UT2K4. But I guess those are the Online FPS games people play the most nowadays. Quake ceased to be THE online shooter a few years ago. It is stupid to make Q4 mp identical to Q3's, considering that (no matter what a few old schoolers think) it is not really relevant anymore.
