You may remember Disaster: Day of Crisis as one of the few third-party Wii games that isn't A) a minigame collection, B) a rhythm game or C) a cooking game. The core concept saw you playing as an anti-terror agent suddenly forced to deal with a series of natural disasters. Unfortunately we really haven't seen or heard much about the game in the past year or so. That is, until today. From Eurogamer (http://www.eurogamer.net/article.php?article_id=228962). Nintendo plans to release Wii title Disaster: Day of Crisis in Europe on 24th October.
--
Rescues will involve flapping the Wiimote and Nunchuk around, while combat will be played out in an on-rails fashion as you blast and pummel your opponents.
Various unlockable weapons and difficulty levels should stretch gameplay out, apparently, as will a shooting range and added Stamina campaign.

Wow... it goes from seemingly vaporware to releasing just two months from now? I'm interested in this game but that just seems strange. I'm anxious to hear some updated impressions.

Well Nintendo did buy a massive chunk of Monolith (not to be confused with the other Monolith) while this was their only game in development. Things kind of went quiet about the game after that. I'm guessing Nintendo saw something in the game (or maybe just needed to empty the cash out of a few coat pockets) so at present I'm cautiously optimistic about this title.

Monolith better make Xenosaga 4-6 for Wii or DS next.

If it's coming out in October and was remotely good, it would have had a mention at E3.

I wish, but it's not going to happen. Unless there's some major good vibes between Nintendo and Namco, that'd be very tough to do, seeing as Namco owns the Xenosaga IP. I'd kill for that, though.

Xenosaga is exactly the kind of game Nintendo openly doesn't want. Why spend millions on a game like Xenosaga when you can spend a couple hundred thousand developing Big Brain Academy Wii Degree and sell way more copies for the same price?

Well it might not hit great numbers in other regions, but popular franchise RPGs sell VERY well in Japan. I would say that a game like Xenosaga could be done(well) 2nd party and see some good ad revenue from Nintendo. Win for Nintendo Japan, win for JRPG fans.

Disaster: Day of Crisis doesn't fit that mold. It's a very niche game.

Nintendo's philosophy about promoting games close to their launch, instead of hyping to high hell 2-3 years before their launch, is in action.

Yeah, I know that the big N "doesn't show a game until it's ready" but you at least knew that Mario, Metroid, and Smash were in development. They showed them off at E3, they released screen shots. Most people thought that Disaster had gone the way of the dodo up until this announcement. I'm hoping that the casual focus at E3 just wasn't in line with Disaster and that's why they didn't show anything. Until I hear some impressions, I'll be cautiously optimistic.

Ooooook.. Looks like they just released a bunch of new screenshots (http://media.wii.ign.com/media/826/826985/imgs_1.html)
Not quite sure what to think honestly. I see a lung meter!

I'm wondering it THIS is the reason it wasn't show at the Nintendo E3 conference (apart from it being a feast for the casual). Nintendo has said that THEY have no more games coming out this year other than what they've already announced. But if Disaster is still being touted as a THIRD PARTY game, then Nintendo would be covered as to why THEY haven't said something about it. Even if they have a big stake in the game, as long as they label it as third party, that could be why it wasn't anywhere around Nintendo at E3 or PAX or anything like that.

When Nintendo showed off Mario, Metroid, etc. they didn't have their new policy in place of not hyping games for the long term.

Metroid Prime 3? The one that didn't have any actual videos or screenshots to speak of until about a month before release?

Hmm... This is one of the games that had me excited about the Wii waaaaay back when. To have it go from zero to hero this fast makes me somewhat nervous. I don't demand a tonne of preview stuff but the total silence around the project until now with a release date in less than two months makes me think it's the kind of thing they want to just sneak out the door...

Spigot, meet Logic. Logic, Spigot. You guys seem to have never been properly introduced. :)
Seriously, though. Since when has the level of hype a game has ever been an indicator of it's quality?

It's not that I demand a game be hyped in order for it to be good.
It's just that for a game that was in every piece of promo material (at least in name, if not in substance) during the Wii launch window, the game basically vanished. Now we hear that it's not only not cancelled but coming out in a month and a half or so.
What I would like to know is why there was this cone of silence about the game for so long now. It's not like this is just Generic Wii Game X. This was one of the games (along with Project H.A.M.M.E.R.) that showed, waaay back during the early days before and after the launch, that there might be more to the system than just minigame collections and the latest iteration of Nintendo's classic franchises.
It's the silence and absolute and utter lack of information about the game that has me worried given the relative imminence of the game's release.
It's a classic trick in the movie business to release a stinker to theatres without doing preview screenings or allowing critics to get a chance to review it prior to the opening weekend in order to maximize the amount of suckers that will go to see Crappy Movie X before they can be warned away from it. That's what I'm worried might be happening here.
I will say that I really, really, REALLY hope that this isn't the case and that it's more an issue of someone in the marketing department needing a slap or something. It would make my day if the game is fantastic as it's been one of the games I've been looking forward to since the Wii was announced.
I'm just being a bit of a pessimist here given the circumstances.
