Midway has fired a salvo back at EA and the NFL in the form of Blitz: The League. Gamespot (http://www.gamespot.com) hits up the first review (http://www.gamespot.com/xbox/sports/blitztheleague/review.html) of the game, and it seems they liked it quite a bit.

What makes a football game fun? Is it the NFL license and careful attention to the details of said license? Is it realistic rules, pacing, and gameplay? Is it a deep franchise mode and 32 teams full of players you know and recognize? If Midway's latest entry in the Blitz franchise, Blitz: The League, is any indication, the answer is an emphatic no. Evidently, all you need is a way to scratch that primal, animalistic itch to slam some pretty-boy quarterback's face in to the turf, breaking his spine in the process and leaving behind little more than a wake of devastation and offensive drives that never were. In Blitz: The League, Midway has bid farewell to the NFL by creating its own brand of football with completely original teams and rosters. But at its core, The League returns to the familiar brand of arcade football that Blitz all but abandoned just a couple of short years ago. This is Blitz at its best, adding an even meaner, uglier spirit to the game that will have anyone with a strong stomach and a thirst for brutality jumping out of his or her seat in elation with every murderous tackle landed. Ladies and gentlemen, Blitz is back.
I know there are some NFL players that are pissed off that this game was even made, they think it makes them look bad because it uses so many stereotypes. I say, they shouldn't have sold their souls to EA and lose control of what other games that are made can contain.

Really? What NFL players? Also, it kind of surprises me that the players, or even their representatives at the NFLPA had that much input into the NFL's agreement with Electronic Arts.

I'm not quite sure it was the NFL players themselves who sold their souls to EA. I doubt they had much say in it.

Then again, I don't think they much cared at the time. I bet they could have tried to stop it from happening if they really wanted. Thus they don't have any room to talk now after the fact.

As far as how the game looks, it seems I might be buying a football game for the first time in ages...

I can't remember who it was offhand, they were on Outside the Lines one morning on ESPN.

The the NFLPA was just as much a part of the deal as the NFL and EA was.

Maybe there could have been some way to stop Midway from making this particular game, but eventually somebody would make a game using football rules and equipment and that the league might not like and it's not the sort of thing they can stop indefinitely. They own the league and the players but they don't own the sport.

I hope they all get pissed. Maybe they will understand that they should pay closer attention to what happens with their contracts.

I'm glad they are pissed. I hope this game sells well and pisses them off even more. =)
I really didn't have much interest in this until recently, but the more and more I hear... maybe this is where I'll turn after 2k5?

Why should they be pissed? This has nothing to do with the league they represent that we really cannot name.

It's stereotyping nobody. Maybe it's some little league? Maybe a Canadian league?

Take your money and go back to your hole. You can see I have no love for the leauge which I cannot name.

I saw that show too. I want to say Ray Buchanan was on that episode? but I'm not 100% sure on the name...

They are pissed because even though it doesn't represent specific NFL players, it does represent football players and stereotypical aspects of the NFL.

And yeah, it was Ray Buchannan...thanks for reminding me.

Now let's cross our fingers and hope this sells. If it does, it will be a shot across Electronic Arts' bow and it may be enough to have EA Tiburon rethink their 'repackaged goods' strategy.

Well boys and girls, this is our chance then. If you want to hit Electronic Arts and the NFL, go out and buy a new (not used) copy of Blitz. We can rant on our boards all we want, but it's dollar votes that change things in business. Period.

That is what I like to hear. Seems I will be picking this one up, new, as soon as the funds come my way.

I had Blitz on the 64. My friends and I wasted so many nights away playing two on two. I had high hopes for this game after the utter shit that was the Blitz Pro games and I am glad to see that Blitz is back. I am not even a football fan, but I am still tempted to pick this up.

Hmm, very interesting. I hope Blitz is back because the last game was just not that good. If Blitz is indeed back, this game will be mine soon enough.

Wow, that could have been my post and it all would have applied (except that I enjoy watching college football, but football video games are more or less boring as hell to me).
