View Full Version : DS Uses WEP for Wireless, no WPA.

Looks like DS users may run into the same problem many PSP users had (until the recent update) by only having options for WEP security. Joystiq (http://www.joystiq.com/entry/1234000550063578/) got the scoop from someone who went to the recent Digital Life Expo in NYC and managed to capture a few screens. What does this mean for you? Well, if you use WPA protocol on your wireless router for security, you won't be able to have your DS connect to it. This of course could be remedied with a firmware upgrade (as long as the hardware allows it) much like the PSP.
Not a HUGE deal, but it will be frustrating for some users out of the box. It also could be troublesome at some local hotspots like coffee shops, etc. that use WPA.
In other Nintendo news, Infendo (http://infendo.blogspot.com/2005/10/spring-for-japan-summer-for-us.html) brings word the Nintendo hotline has the "release date" for the Revolution console.
"As the company with the strongest heritage of innovation, Nintendo moves the bar for all next-gen systems by employing a wide-ranging strategy that will attract more kinds of gamers to more kinds of games. When Nintendo's new console, codenamed Revolution, arrives in the later half of 2006, everyone will discover the meaning of all-access gaming."

In reality WEP is probably more secure than WPA in these scenarios.
Though the algorithm for WPA is more secure than WEP, UNLESS you use a WPA key that is AT LEAST 20 characters long and random, it is prone to offline dictionary attacks. I guarantee 99.999% of the population cannot be bothered to do this and will choose something short and thus easilly crackable.
I believe WPA2 is supposed to address this issue but until then the wierd part is that WEP is actually a better way to go for most people.

I think at most this will only be frustrating to the computer savy people with a home wireless network set up. Most people with wireless networks don't even know how to turn on WEP, let alone WPA. The biggest problem is playing in hot spots...

The problem here is that I believe my wireless card in my laptop only allows use of one of these two, and I can't remember which. But I'm not unsecuring my network for my DS. As well, I have to wonder how this is going to work for networks that require you to go to a log-in page.
This was not properly thought out by Nintendo.

^ Chances are, if it only allows the use of one of those, its going to be WEP (which is far more common the WPA)

yeah, WPA is fairly new. This really is only going to affect 2% if not less of the wi-fi users.

Nope, mine only uses WPA, I checked. So, I'm fucked.
Thanks Nintendo!
Sony did the same thing with the PSP and only added WPA later. If Nintendo built-in any possibility of firmware updates, this shouldn't be an issue for long.

Right as long as the HARDWARE supports WPA as well. The PSP hardware supported but it shipped with it deactivated for whatever reason, hopefully that happened with the DS.

From what I can tell, it doesn't even matter anymore. Appearently not only would I have to change my network setup to get it to work, but I'd also not be able to use it on the go since my campus requires a log-in page (this is going by something I've assumed for a while). The DS's wi-fi is pretty worthless to me at this point.
