Dang, that sucks...I played the trial this morning and I am I right in pretty much saying this is like the X-Men, TMNT and Simpsons Arcade games from long ago with some being able to upgrade character abilities?

im sure its attributed to the initial flood of people trying online at once.. thousands of people have been waiting nearly 2 years for this day

Yes, fun single player. That's all I've done with it so far, so I can't attest to the multiplayer issues.

It's this, plus humor, plus branching pathways through the game. And there's so much more. The combat is deeper than it appears to be at first. There are combos, air juggles, spells, different weapons to grab, new characters to unlock, etc.
I've only played about 5 levels, but it's exactly what I was hoping for and then some.

Eh...the "humor" is pretty juvenile if not outright immature. Shitting animals? Really, Behemoth? Really?

You know, I laughed at that stuff. It made me chuckle, and I'm not usually one for stupid humor. But in Castle Crashers, it just fits. The whole thing is silly, it starts off silly, and it remains silly. I mean, these cute little guys are beating the bloody fuck out of each other, and an animal rocketing across the screen from shitting himself doesn't fit the bill?
Alien Hominid has a very similar sense of humor, and I enjoyed every cock slapping minute of it.

I appreciate the silliness of the entire game, but the crap was just too much for me, honestly. It doesn't kill the game at all or anything like that, I just wasn't a fan of that entire...sequence. If you can call it that.

I've only played the first level but I can't wait to play more tonight. It's just pure silly goofiness and it looks delicious, so while I'll wait for them to fix the online stuff, I'll giggle my brains out on the singleplayer side of things.

I only got a little bit of time with it last night, but it's the sort of game I've been lamenting the death of for years. A bonafide multiplayer scrolling beat em up like I used to play in the arcade years ago. Love it.
On the bad side, although this is not a failing of the game itself, Gold member locked themes and gamer pictures? REALLY? Up your hole with a big jam roll, whoever thought that up.

Really? Played through the entire game, hosted half the time and played on another host for the other half. Not a single problem. Smooth all the way.
I've played through the game one and a half time today. Fun, fun, fun. I made a pure magic knight (the green one) and one tank (grey knight), and both playstyles were great fun. Tomorrow I'll try out agility & archery.
As for play time, I guess you can complete it in approx 5 hours at a normal tempo. I probably played it for 8-9 hours today, so I've easily got my moneys worth (and I am going to play it more).
One thing annoys me, and that is that I didn't get the "completed the game"-achievement & bonus character upon completion of the game. There could be a good reason for this though, as I switched character once, and probably haven't completed every stage with one single character. And now I have no clue whatsoever which stages to play to "complete it". Reminds me of the Co-op Dom-achievement in Gears, where I played with a friend as Dom through the entire game, exept maybe 5 minutes.

Well if anyone is around for a game, I notice many are playing ATM, toss me an invite. Broken or not 4 players is better than 1. Overall from what I've played single player it's worth the money, I've needed a good beat em up game and this fills that need.

This game is better or every bit as godo as Knights of the Round,Dungeons and Dragons, Double Dragon and Final Fight. It's about time we got some offbeat and senseless fun. The animals crapping was hilarious! With games like this Xboxlive Arcade shows what it's truly capable of. It was games like this that made people like me dump quarters into beat em ups so many years ago.
I give it 5 out of 5!
I only wish other 15 dollar games were this fun.

Purchased. I really liked the trial, so bought the full game right away.
There are so many fun things in the game. It's pure bliss when the game throws yet another new chunk of gameplay your way, or shows you another layer of the combat.
I'm having a blast.
If anyone remembers Turtles in Time, this game brings a similar kind of joy, and adds weapons, leveling, upgrades, treasure, unlockable characters, and all sorts of other weird shit. The levels are creative, colorful, and nothing is ever static. There are new enemies every step of the way, new bosses, and new laughs.
It's definitely worth the price of admission for the joy it will bring to my group of friends for the next few weeks.

I wish the combat system was more robust, with SF style command moves like we had in D&D: Shadows over Mystara and Guardian heroes. The combos really aren't filling that role for me that well. I also wish the weapons had more substantial effects than just stat bump/nerfs.
I still like the game plenty, I'm just mentioning stuff I'm a little bummed to not see in it.

I didn't even bother with the demo; instead, I just bought it outright.
I'm definitely not suffering from buyer's regret right now. Before tonight, the last time I said, "This is one of the best gaming experiences I'll have all year" was when Patapon first came out.
It took a few months, but Castle Crashers got me to say it again.
Also, the Blue Knight is the best. He can freeze enemies in place; that owns all.

Is this really what people were going nuts over?
Is there ANY difference besides a fairly pathetic magic attack or two between the characters? Or any reason to use an axe over a sword? Why would you even have all these characters and weapons if they're all functionally alike?
For all the hype I was hoping for something at least on the same quality level as, say, Guardian Heroes. I guess that's not happening. This was kind of a waste of cash for me.

Mmmm glad I wasn't expecting that from this. Otherwise I would also be dissapointed.
I think everyone is loving this game because it's a great reminder of what fun you can have/had with this type of game. It's a blast from the past with some very nice up to date polish.

I agree somewhat. I've played through the game 4 times now (which means 4 unlocked characters) and every character is basically the same. There are a few characters who are EXACTLY the same (functionality wise) and that annoys the shit out of me. Yes the weapons are almost all identical with buffs/nerfs being the only thing to set them apart (there are a couple of exceptions but I'm not spoiling the game for anyone). And whoever said there were branching paths is a bit confused. You can move about the map however you'd like but it is very linear. There is one path that is going to take you to from the beginning to the end. You don't vary from that aside from going back to change weapons or pets.
With that being said, I am completely content with this game. I don't typically purchase anything over 800 points but this game is totally worth the $15. There is enough content to get me through at least a few weeks of gaming. The artwork is pretty fun. I have had no issues playing online so I can't comment on that aside from hearing the same from other people over XBL. My roomies and I can get together for a game and grab a couple other buddies over XBL and play for hours. So all in all a fun game with a lot of content but not a ton of depth.
Great fun game, worth 1200 MSP's. If you've not bought it yet don't listen to the misery guts, just go in expecting a laugh and a great blast from the past.

You are correct it shouldn't. However the history of XBLA tells me what is a realistic indicator to expect from a title. Unless offically told otherwise.

What, really? Haven't you been paying attention? Synapse Lapse even posted pictures.
Much like Alien Hominid was channeling the side-scrolling shooters from the days of yore, Castle Crashers is channeling games like the TMNT or X-Men arcade games. It's a good, ol' fashioned beat-em-up with some modern advacements that make it even more fun than the old classics; it's got just enough depth to keep it going...not whole lot, but just enough.
Besides, it's a $15 game; I don't care what platform a game is released on, a budget titles is still a budget title.

pictures don't do much for capturing the feeling of a game. although i do seem to remember watching a brief video. i think in general i'm just not into their art choice for the game, i.e. i'm not into cartoon looking games, but i'm willing to try it out just to make sure.
$15 is a high price for a live game to me, not because i can't afford it, but because it passes that mental $9.99 ceiling that most live/psn games don't even warrant (for me).
anyway, i'll try the demo, but between the cartoon look and the price there's a slim to none chance of me ever getting this.

It's okay, man. You can admit it; you're not really into fun and you haven't played some of the most classic arcade games to have ever existed. When describing it to my friends, who hadn't really heard about the game, all I needed to say was, "It's basically like the old X-Men or TMNT arcade games, but you can level up" for them to understand exactly what the game is like.
Seriously, though. You've been told what games it plays similarly to and there's a free demo out there...and yet you still don't get the "feel" of the game? The blame for that pretty much rests solely on you, champ.

If 15 bucks is high for a Live game, then you're missing out on two of the best, most creative and awesome games available on the platform.
That is no one's fault but your own.
And I have yet to understand why someone would state the cartoon look of the title as a negative. The art is so detailed, and the style is simple, but terrific. Honestly, there's so much variety, and it's all hand drawn, I'm not sure how that could be a bad thing.
Unless you're allergic to fun.

Inflation, dudes. In no less than a year (or like, now), all good XBLA titles will be 15, and the middling titles will be 10.
Also, there will be one less fiesta potato in the bowl when you order it off the dollar menu. (Anybody else love those things?)

New 360 and PS3 games were always sixty bucks from day one.
The reason they went up in price was not due to inflation, but mainly because it costs so fucking much to develop a game for the next gen consoles.

Price inflation though usually follows a trend...in this case there isn't a trend. Only certain games are priced 50% to 100% more.

Name calling or not, it's not due to "inflation" pure and simple. Neither was the jump from $50 to $60. That had to do with larger front end investments in games (or so they tell us).

I didn't realize explaining inflation was a way of getting attention.
Okay, I'm done. Did you really just alter someone's quote to say that he/she likes to molest small boys?
You are now officially banned. If you believe the punishment to be unjust, you can contact me here. (fitbabits@evilavatar.com)

I was going to download this yesterday, but then realized that f-ing microsoft won't let you buy just 1200 point, you have to get 1500 at least. Why can't they just charge the price of the game?

Well, I'm going to have to pick this up...I hope the multiplayer gets patched, though. It just looks like too much fun to play SP only!

I think inflation means more to an economy that the simple "wage-price spiral" definition. That's not a direct factor, and though I do believe it to be an indirect factor, that's not the type of inflation I was referring to.
Inflation is a general rise in the level of prices of goods and services over time. The wage-price spiral has a huge effect on this trend, but so do free-market economic choices. The latter is the cause of the trend we're seeing on XBLA. John Blow explained that he didn't want to gamble on breaking even, so he wen't with Microsoft's idea to up the price.
Whether companies need to make larger front end investments to keep up with growing standards or they need to keep up with cost of living increases, the prices of new games has risen. Someone pointed out that the prices on 360 and PS3 never actually rose. That's a valid point. I did not phrase that correctly.
Companies have, for many years, been known to adjust prices by 50 or 100 percent. I believe a number of macroeconomic factors are at play when companies raise prices. It's all about choices. When we analyse these choices, we come up with words like inflation. Not the other way around.

I think inflation...
We have already established that the price of games is not based on inflation. The cost of gaming has gone up because the technology has advanced, and developing for newer technologies is more expensive. That is not inflation. That is the cost of operation. That is the same as saying, "It costs more to fuel/repair my fusion-driven Corvette than it does to fuel/repair my Ford F150.
That is not inflation.

Because I regularly changes quotes to imply child molestation. Right.

Angry much? There isn't a single macroeconomic force behind the rise in prices. You're naive if you think there is.

I didn't report him for trolling... I reported him for implying that someone is/was a child molester. Not sure how that's hypocritical at all.

Well, you know what? I'm sorry I called you naive. You're certainly right about one of the major causes in the rise in prices. What I've been trying to say the whole time is that inflation isn't a cause; it's an effect. A general rise in prices. I think we're going to see it happen on XBLA. That's all. Sorry if I offended anyone else.

Well to get this thread back on track, what should I get this or Braid? I really like the look of this game and want it but I heard Braid is one of those games that come by like every 5 years? If I HAD to get one what do you guys recommend?? I'm leaning towards crashers.

Christ, it sucks that a thread about one of the best XBLA games we've seen to date had to get trashed because of a possible misuse of the term "inflation" and general asshattery.
I'm also sort of pissed that Behemoth's site is still down; I was hoping they'd have at least a smidgen of info on how to unlock some of the stuff.

Glad to see the dust's already settled, so there's no need to respond to any more idiotic posts.
So... back on topic: Great game! I only played the demo but I definitely dug the style. For some odd reason it made me think of Golden Axe and Black Tower combined, and I appreciated that it's not quite as chaotic as Alien Hominid. I couldn't even see the bullets in AH some times!

I am thoroughly enjoying this game. I play couch multiplayer with my girlfriend, family, and friends. It rocks. Admittedly though I have not taken the game online so I haven't run into any problems yet. However, what I have played alone and with everyone here, we have all loved the game and had a lot of fun with the experience. No complaints here :)

online is broken for me as well
friend tried to host a 2 player session 3 times......after character selection screen, it drops
i hosted, we played a couple levels.......dropped
one of his friends hosts a 4 player session........dropped and froze my game, quit to dashboard, reload.......he hosts again, we play a few levels.........dropped
i am done with online until i hear good word that it is fixed.......which is so sad because that is the main draw for me

You get quite a bit of game for $15 here. I honestly couldn't say the same for Braid. A buddy of mine and I split the cost of Braid and I still sort of felt ripped off. It's a great game. Just incredibly short.
