View Full Version : F.E.A.R. Scores a 9.1 on Gamespot

Gamespot's (http://www.gamespot.com/) review of F.E.A.R scored a 9.1 (http://www.gamespot.com/pc/action/fear/review.html?sid=6135744)

F.E.A.R. is quite easily one of the most intense and atmospheric games that you'll play, and it's a spectacular blend of horror and action. You can't help but get the feeling that this is a game that's the spiritual successor to the original Half-Life, because it's so obviously inspired by that classic game. Indeed, some of the locations and enemies are highly reminiscent of those in Half-Life. This is a game that will thrill you one moment and scare you the next. F.E.A.R. features some of the greatest gunplay available in a first-person shooter, and it elevates the art of firing a gun to whole new levels. This alone makes it an incredibly intense game that must be experienced. The fact that it's also one of the creepiest games ever made is just icing on the cake.
This is easily my most anticipated game this year, it's great to hear that it's getting great scores.

9.1 on Gamespot is a top score. F.E.A.R really seems to deliver the goods. I hope this will be out on X360 as I won't upgrade my PC for gaming anymore.

I've been playing the demo but I've read from IGN that they made improvements since putting the demo out there. I hope so because while the graphics are top notch, the sound is... odd. This is probably because of my sound card but still its possible they added support for it in the interrim.

I haven't heard anything about a non-PC version. It stands to reason, however, that with all the integration that MS is doing with the Xbox360 and Windows that it is possible a port is easily made.

That's perfect for me anyway, because Tuesday is when Batman Begins comes out on DVD and I'll be watching it all night. I'll come in to work on Wednesday and (hopefully) have my FEAR game ready to take home and play all night. :)

Yes Securom v7 makes a service that runs(more than likely runs all the time though, you know the way they make these things) when you want to play a Securom v7 game, I just fucking hate when a game company goes behind my back and installs shit that I didn't know about w/o my permission to play a game, ie Starforce and this.

IF they said "This will install a service called Secrurom User Access Service (v7)"
OR "This will install Starforce into the device Manager and hide it away so you don't know its there". At least then it'd be better than them slyly just installing it w/o saying diddly.

No, it still is a horrible system. It messes with the machines of the paying customers, whereas the warez monkeys can easily circumvent it. I wish publishers the best of luck in securing their IP, but adding in features that only screw with your legitimate, paying customers just isn't the way to do it.

Can't you just go into the service manager and set it for very low priority so that it doesn't take more RAM than it absolutely needs? I would think that you could run a script that would fire it up when you use the game and forcibily shut it off when the game isn't running. I'm not a programmer and I don't do any scripting but from what I've seen in OSX, this should be very possible even in Windows. You would have to fire up the script manually or have the script fire off when the game starts, but it might be possible. Perhaps I am thinking aloud about things I know nothing about but speculation never hurts anything.

I didn't see anything that said shipping was free. Was there a special code or something that I missed? I admit that a DVD version rather than a multidisk version would be better. Getting it the next day would be worth it but it isn't $10 worth it. Free would, of course, make it completely worth it.

Unless subsequent to E3 Vivendi has decided that they want to print more money. Lets insert a dramatic pause here so that this concept can sink in

<dramatic pause>

As shocking of an idea as that is to some of you, it'a actually a fact that companies would in fact rather do something easy and make even more money when they get an opportunity to do so... Porting to a console is an altogether sensible thing to do, and if its a new console, they would not be in any particular hurry to do so having already missed the launch window.

And in spite of the fact that the game is almost surely coded for a single processor, porting the game would probably not be all THAT terribly difficult. Certainly not "rewrite the entire game" level of difficult... Hell it would not even be close. I bet that this game will come to the 360. Hell it may come to more platforms than that if its a big "hit".

Odds are more than slightly favorable that this will come to a console. So if you must play this game RIGHT NOW, then buy it now for PC. But if you are willing to be patient, be patient. The worst that can happen is that you will get a discount on the PC version. And I honestly think even that outcome has about a 0% chance of happening. Balls roll downhill, and companies need to make money in order to survive...

Why... why would anyone wait to play an inferior console version of a PC developed FPS?

Wonka
10-15-2005, 01:36 AM
Well I can tell you why I would want to:

1) Big TV
2) Nice sound system
3) Costs. Almost none of my friends can afford expensive gaming PCs, but they CAN afford consoles. Even at $400 a new Xbox 360 is a steal when you consider it will last at least 4 years. And these guys have wives. Many of them also have kids. Hell I have a wife, so I understand. Big purchases have extra costs associated when your family gets larger.
4) I deal the the PC at work all day long. I solve complicated problems for a living. I don't have a need to do it at home too. Plus it's nice to give my eyes a different focal length for once...
5) By the time that it's finally playtime, I am usually tired. I do not wish to spend my playtime debugging software, installing patches or even upgrading. Yes, that's right. I am even tired of upgrading. When I was younger and upgrading was still "new and exciting" I used to enjoy it. But now, it only takes away from my leisure time.
6) I personally like the social aspect of LIVE!. I use it to keep in touch with people. Games are much more fun for me when I can use them as a shared experience with friends. This just goes with having less leisure time I guess. I know there are alternatives for voice on PCs, but then you run into the cost issues that I described above.
7) Screw it. I am far too tired to come up with seven. Besides the 1st 6 points ought to explain things adequatelly to anyone reasonable. If you are unreasonable (and I know that some of you are), I actually don't care what you think. So there is no reason to respond if you are unreasonable, since I will be deaf to you.

So there you go. For me the choice is really quite simple. I can deal with the thumbsticks. Just plug me in so I can play please.

If you are out there and you make a game, and then insist that I maintain a windows box with drivers, patches and constant upgrade expenses to play it, then I will insist on not buying your game. End of line.

1) Also on PC.
2) Also on PC. Shocking, isn't it?
3) Agree.
4) Personal preferences. So PC gaming is for people who don't work with PCs? Are you racist :) ?
5) Old record. I can name 100 titles that didn't need any "tiresome" fixing and updating. Buy the game, install it and double-click on the shortcut on your desktop. Nothing fancy about that.
6) What cost issues? I am aware that Live! is better because it just always works, but hey - Live! costs MONEY, PC equivalents DON'T.
7) Typical anti-PC stance. I own 2 consoles and yet I can see the advantages of PC gaming... makes me unreasonable, right?

I do all my gaming on an Amiga, which is like a console and a PC. I'm the best.

Heheh. No Borys, I have seen your posts and you are not normally unreasonable.

But you seem to think that my post was somehow designed to convince you that console gaming is better.

And in fact it was NOT.

I honestly don't care if you like your PC better. Hell, I don't even care if you make sick love to your PC case at nights as long as you don't tell me about it. You go right on ahead and crouch over that thing till you develop a hunch. I really, truly, genuinely don't care.

My post was just to explain how *I* feel about gaming, and why *I* have chosen to game on a console. If you don't feel the same way, thats just fine with me. You have fun there by yourself hunching away in the dark.

Just understand that "thecrazyd" had asked a question. They wanted to know why anyone would choose to game on a console when a PC version was available. I simply answered.

Whoa there big guy, no need to get defensive, and attack people for developing hunches and crouching in the dark when you - apparently, according to your own post - choose to work on computers all day long, and are in fact using one at this very moment. I agree with you on many points where console gaming is concerned, it is fun to kick back in the recliner, and play on the big screen with your buddies - but that's no need to slam pc gaming. PC's are where all the cutting edge technology is showcased - you wanna see what Xbox360 and PS3 will look like? Play a PC game. I love the 'fun factor' of consoles (I've got all the current gen stuff, and I've got a 360 pre-ordered), but when I want the bleeding edge, I turn to PC.

The whole PC vs console thing is almost as stupid as the Nintendo vs Sony vs Microsoft thing - if you're a gamer, and not a fanboy, you appreciate what you're playing for what it is - not what you play it on.

My two cents.

PC is where bleeding edge "will be" like how Xbox 360 is getting full Unreal 3 Engine games before PC. Oblivion, most likely will look and play better on the Xbox 360 first. Dev's can make Xbox 360 games to the full capacity without worrying about other crap other may have on there PC. This is where the "will be" kicks in, after patches, new hardware, and other ramdom junk that can go with optimizing for peek glory. I'd buy a PS3(something to expensive and not in my plans at all) if someone is able to cut Oblivion on with all the maxed on settings without any stutter or issues first day. To make it more unlikely let's just add, looks better than xbox 360 version to the list. Now after those other factors however, some mods, I'm sure it will be the dominate version.

Aside from the having to be so damn close to the monitor and the smallness of my monitor and the heat and the money thing, I'd give PC gaming a shot. I JUST manage to play WoW.

Perhaps I should explain that I don't think that ALL PC gamers are hunchbacks before you all decide to spend time waggling your fingers at me.

Somehow though, I always imagined Borys with a hump. I'm not sure why, I have never met the guy, but for some reason that's just how I picture him...

And hey, if you or someone you know have somehow developed a hunch from PC gaming, thats OK with me too. If that's what works for you, I hope you have been having a great time. I really do.

But seriously, what part of "I'm ok, you're ok" don't you guys understand? A man asked a question about why someone would want to play games on a console and I answered it. Why does that mean that I somehow hate PC gamers? Just because I don't want to spend my spare time hunching doesn't mean that I care whether or not you do it.

If anything, I feel kind of concerned for PC gaming. I fear that its glory days are numbered. Retail space is shrinking for PC gaming, and there is just too much money to be made in console games. It doesn't affect me much, if PC gaming withers away into a tiny niche market over the next 15 years. But it's like hearing that we no longer have rain forests. It's just not a good thing to hear.
