Microsoft has announced a list of games that will be appearing on their Xbox Live Arcade service throughout the Christmas 05 holiday period. Some of the games in the service include classics such as Smash TV, Gauntlet and Robotron 2084 from Midway, as well as Bizarre Creations' Geometry Wars 2.

What exactly is Live! Arcade? Do these games become part of the Gold service, or do you have to purchase them? How much do they cost? Etc.

Smash TV and Robotron? Hell yes!
I don't see this doing very well though if they keep prices around $10 a game.

It's a stand alone service for those that already have Live!. You needed an initial cd to install, which was given away with one of the official XBM or you could send away to MS for a copy of the disk. The service itself allowed you to download old arcade games for a small fee and save to your hard drive.
I think this will probably be better implemented with the new Gold/Silver services. You'll almost certainly have to pay a small fee for each title though.

Head here for a better idea of what the pricing per game might be, as well:

Live Arcade has it's own section now under the new 360 dashboard. It's listed under the games section. The titles will range in prices from 5 to 10 bucks. All games will have a demo version that you can download and try. All games will run at 1080i. Both Silver and Gold members of Live have access to it.
Some games, like Project Gotham Racing 3 will include the Live Arcade version of Geometry Wars for free. There's a few other 360 games in the works that will have similar cross promotional tie-ins.
Also to note, the live Arcade Titles easily fit on a memory card, in fact I've seen up to 5 titles on one memory card, so you don't necessarily need the hard drive.
I just really fucking love Geometry Wars 2....god damn I can't wait to play that game some more. I wish it'd come out on the DS/PSP.

All I want to know is whether or not this means that I can finally play joust online?
I love Joust, but the people who used to sit next to me and play it (many many years ago) have now moved to couches that are very far away.

Wow, $5 - $10 seems a bit steep to me for antique, albiet very fun, games. I suppose I may splurge and pick up Joust and a couple of others just for the fun of playing against other people. Still, that does seem a bit high.
Edit: Double wow, I was shooting low. Most of em are $10 or even more! That is just absofuckinlutely ridiculous. Talk about gouging. Still, I could see myself spending that for one or two just for fun. I guess thats where they have us nostalgic gamers by the balls.
I would really like to play all of them, and not just demos, but that would wind up costing entirely too much. Oh well.

Where'd you hear the price thing? I thought I saw in an interview that they'd be keeping the $10-$20 model of the current Live Arcade, which is a recipe for failure.
And good to hear that they're supporting memory cards with it. You and I will have hard drives, but the much of the casual audience that will make or break the Arcade may be purchasing the $300 Idiot Set.

Honestly, 10-20 is waaay to expensive.
Granted, they have 1080i... but when I can pay 15 bucks for 20 classics, or mame them, 15 bucks for 1 classic seems waaay to steep.
If they made the old school arcade games like 1-5 bucks, and then indie games 5-20, THEN I'd be paying more attention (no pun intended).

I was told by the MS rep doing the arcade demo that the games would range from 5 to 10 bucks. The prices on that site are for the Live Arcade that is in existance now, not the new one. I don't believe any of the games are straight ports, but will get some makeover like Joust got.
And yes, Joust will have full multiplayer (including Co-Op) over Live.
One thing they didn't say, which I wonder is if you need to have the Gold service to play arcade games over live...that would kinda suck.

People are paying 20 bucks for it (http://www.handango.com/PlatformProductDetail.jsp?siteId=1&jid=DBFX775763A5A576875D49XE4EFAB18B&platformId=1&N=96804&productId=15270&R=15270) on the Palm Pilot...that's probably why. :(

Oh motherfucker, JOUST IS ON!
Correct me if I'm wrong: Won't the Live Arcade games be available to purchase for anyone using the Silver version of Live on the 360?

At the Digital Life Expo in NYC I got to play joust. There are settings for non-HD and HD and it is amazing how much better the game looks in HD even if it is old school. As soon as you flip the switch you can tell the difference. Enhanced backgrounds - crisp graphics - better colors - all in all better.

MS has said they are aimimg for $5-10, though it's up to the publisher I think. Hexic comes on the hard drive, possibly more. And every game is required to have a demo.
