View Full Version : Final Fantasy XIII Demo to Last Over Two Hours

According to the upcoming DKS3713 issue of Famitsu magazine, the PlayStation 3 exclusive Final Fantasy XIII demo will clock in at a longer running time than the CGI film, Final Fantasy VII: Advent Children Complete.
Currently the original Advent Children film clocks in at a runtime of 101mins; however, the Blu-ray version of the movie will feature scenes that were either cut completely or not finished in time for the initial release, resulting in a significantly longer runtime.
Here is a list of other tidbits revealed from the three-page spread in Famitsu:
-The Final Fantasy XIII demo will be based from the opening section of the game.
-The demo will come on a separate disc rather than on the Advent Children Blu-ray.
- Mr. 33CM's real name is based off of weather as well.
- One of the female characters, refered to as 'Pigtails Girl', has been through some tough times.
Final Fantasy VII: Advent Children Complete is scheduled for release in March 2009.

I wonder how much of the "two hours" is going to be cutscenes :P

That's still two hours more than I care to play.
(Yes, I took the time to post about a game series I don't care for. Sue me.)

I'm not sure how things will look down the road for me financially (as in having a PS3 or not), but I'll be getting AC:Complete at some point.

Advent Children is essentially one long cutscene, and it was a seven layer cake of awesome. Even if the FFXIII "demo" was a 2 hour cutscene, I fail to see how this could be a bad thing. =P
Well, some of us like to actually play our games Valkyrist =) As for FFVII:AC being awesome... Well, it's not quite the right topic for it, but I don't agree with you there at all.
Anyway, I'm sure some people will enjoy it. I'll just end up buying the game itself when it comes out, I have no real inclination to even want to play the first two hours if I have to go back and play them all through again.

Y'know, I've got the regular edition of FFVII:AC on DVD... I might consider getting the FFVII:AC:C blu-ray... But this sounds like the perfect title to Netflix, if I had that sort of thing.

Depends on the price for me. I'm not down with paying $30 for movies just because they are in HD. $20 is the most expensive price you'll find for a single DVD, and I'm not willing to pay more.
Plus, while I'm edging closer and closer to getting a PS3, there are only a handful of titles that I find compelling coming out on the system, so unless they get WKC out early or announce some exclusives coming out soon that I care about and they were just inexplicably sitting on, then I can probably wait for the next price-drop. Hopefully that will be buy this Christmas and I can pick one up this year. If not, no biggie.

They're adding another 30-45 minutes to the movie, otherwise, I'd just wait to find it cheap.

Don't we have to wait for a Blu-Ray release in America though? Since it will only play Blu-Ray movies of a specific region (unless you have a Japanese PS3).
Or am I confusing Blu-Ray with UMD...

Hopefully they don't screw up the demo like they did FF12. That was a fantastic game that lost a lot of steam due to a poor demo.

That's interesting and enticing, but I still won't pay more than $20 for it. . . maybe $25.
My PS3 choice has changed over time. . . I'm moving towards a purchase. It is not "the same old thing" or rhetoric. It's also appropriate to this topic. Obviously, I won't be purchasing this if I don't have a console that plays Blu-Ray movies (and the demo). A 2 hour demo isn't enough for me to purchase a system. There are two criteria for my getting this: $20 or under and me owning a PS3. It's on topic.
You are projecting. I don't say things to promote my console of choice, but make evaluations based on where I want to spend my money. You DO promote your console of choice and make purchases based on your promotion of Sony. You even buy really short games that can be beaten in a weekend and start having fanboy panics when I tell people that the games are really short so they should rent first (unless I say it about an Xbox 360 or PC title and then you don't give a shit).
I've laid off your Sony promotion because you haven't been obnoxious about it for a long time (and in fact I think you are the best of the new reds. . . this post aside), and everyone has an opinion. Your love of Sony products is absolutely valid as an opinion. Don't try to stifle my opinions or pick on me for them, and I won't attack yours.

Damn that must be a record for longest demo or sth. Not even the movie wannabie MSG series is close to that. I wonder what that will do to the 360 version? Like 10 DVDs where you play some, get up from your chair and switch dvd and so on :P
I really wish MS would release a Blue Ray stand alone player like they did with the HD DVD stand alone player. Don't see any reasons to why they should not do it...

I don't think it's good that they're adding another 30-40 minutes to Advent Children, because the original version sucked. More of that is not what I'm looking forward to. However, the Final Fantasy XIII demo is something I'm looking forward to. Sad thing is, it's not going to be localized for other regions until next autumn at the earliest.

Personally I would not want to put my time into a demo that long. Which brings me to the thought why don't they make demos that give you the first bit of a game and when/if you get the game you can continue where you left off?

Personally I would not want to put my time into a demo that long.Huh, I would've thought the more they can give you in a demo, the better. You can see/play more of it and see if it's worth a purchase. But I guess you can play as much or as little of it as you like. Hopefully they put the demo up on PSN after this movie/demo's been out for a while.Which brings me to the thought why don't they make demos that give you the first bit of a game and when/if you get the game you can continue where you left off? That'd be a good idea, though if there's a long time between the demo's release and the full game's release, I'd probably want to go back and re-play it, so it's fresh in my mind. Though I suppose for some games, the beginning is a bit slow, and may not show off the more interesting parts of the whole.

If the 30-40 minutes of extra footage is predominantly action and not moping around I'll pick it up, but I won't play the demo as I want to play FFXIII fresh from the start, not get 2 hours in and then repeat that much all over again.

I meant for something like an RPG where you get the game and end up having to go back through the 2 hours you already played. I realize that you can play as much as you want, but if you're into something you'll want to finish but when you get the full game you might be bored to tears the first 2 hours of the game.

There's nothing wrong with having the opinion, have it all you want, it's perfectly valid for some people. That's fine. The constant posting of that opinion in any thread related to the PS3, however (or any console for that matter), gets old. It has no relation to the topic at hand and it only serves to derail the thread.
It's just as bad as anyone posting that the Wii is crap in any thread related to the Wii. It gets old.

It is on topic. Did you not read why? I'll repeat:
My PS3 choice has changed over time. . . I'm moving towards a purchase. It is not "the same old thing" or rhetoric. It's also appropriate to this topic. You have an agenda and use "rhetoric". When Valkyrie Profile 2 was coming to the PS2 and the original was coming to the PSP, you had nothing but nice things to say, but now that all the Tri-Ace games are coming exclusively to the Xbox 360, you are constantly downplaying them.
Or is that a valid opinion?
Maybe it is. . . I don't pick on you for it because I pay you the respect of thinking your opinion is either valid or interesting and don't call it repetitive (even though in this example it is), and I don't ridicule you for it.
Do you really want to keep playing who can be the bigger jerk because I have a lot more examples of your bias besides the way you go into a fanboy panic when I tell people that short games (wait, only those short games on Sony consoles) should be rented before they are purchased or how you flipflopped your support of Tri-Ace when they no longer supported your precious Sony.
It's just as bad as anyone posting that the Wii is crap in any thread related to the Wii. It gets old.
No, it isn't. I'm not saying the PS3 is shit. I am saying that I want a PS3, but there are only a few games that I want for it, so I can put off the purchase until the console gets another price-drop (or better games). This is a NEW and not repetitive statement. . . I finally decided that I am going to get a PS3 (it has been up in the air before) after E3, but with only a handful of interesting exclusives coming out this Fall, I can probably manage to wait and buy one after the next price drop. That is not an attack on the PS3 anymore than you saying that you might get Infinite Undiscovery (the only Xbox 360 title I remember reading you consider) is an insult. I'm showing interest in an eventual purchase of the PS3 and, more on topic, an interest in FF:AC.
Plus, this was not a derail. Your comments are a derail because you must know by now that I would never let a snarky comment bully me into not sharing my opinion, and most certainly not when your attack is as baseless as this one.

This isn't done enough. Someone needs to experiment with it...

I read what you wrote. You also seem to feel that in nearly every PS3 related thread that you post in you have to put in some comment about how the PS3 almost has enough out or coming to be worth buying, just not yet. It comes off as very passive-aggressive, even if you don't mean it that way.
I did? Hell, I was never interested in VP2. Shit, the game came out only a few weeks after I even registered for EvAv. I'm critical of Tri-Ace because every new game they've released after SO2 has been deeply flawed, to the point that I just don't enjoy them. The only reason I'm looking forward to the SO1 & 2 remakes is because they've got SO2's combat system, the only one they've ever gotten right, IMO. Damn, it, bean, try looking back at the early SO4 announcements that I myself posted, you know, back when it looked like it was going to be a PS3 game? I was critical of TA back then, just as I am now.
Or is that a valid opinion?
Maybe it is. . . I don't pick on you for it because I pay you the respect of thinking your opinion is either valid or interesting and don't call it repetitive (even though in this example it is), and I don't ridicule you for it.
bean, this isn't about you being a victim or me even criticizing your opinion. You've got your opinion, great, I just don't need to read your opinion on buying the PS3 in every damn thread related to it on the site. If we were talking about people buying the system, great, but we're not.
Go for it. Please, show me this bias. You know what short game should be bought for the 360? Crackdown. The game is frickin' brilliant, even w/o the online. That's an easy buy to me just as much as Uncharted or Ratchet.
No, it isn't. I'm not saying the PS3 is shit. I am saying that I want a PS3, but there are only a few games that I want for it, so I can put off the purchase until the console gets another price-drop (or better games). That was a poor choice of example on my part, I wasn't trying to imply that you were calling the PS3 "shit". It was, though, an apt metaphor only because it's an example of trying to push your personal view of a console into a conversation that's centered only on a game for said console, not the console itself. Not every thread has to be some overarching discussion centered on the consoles, some of us would love to just keep it about the damn games.
Plus, this was not a derail. Your comments are a derail because you must know by now that I would never let a snarky comment bully me into not sharing my opinion, and most certainly not when your attack is as baseless as this one.

Here is where your perception is wrong and the source of all of this. I've said it in both of my reply posts, but you read it but don't seem to comprehend it or simply don't choose to believe it.
Once again, with feeling:

I'm going to continue considering whether or not the game library of the PS3 is worth a purchase EVERY time something new is added to that lineup that I would like to have. . . even if I only want it a little. This is the first Blu-Ray I've really wanted (though I also want the ability to rent HD movies), so it effects the equation. If the PS3 had Too Human, Fable 2, Infinite Undiscovery, Last Remnant, this fall, then I'd be talking about how those games make me more interested (and if it had all of them, I'd already be in your camp and BUYING a PS3). I also talk about this in discussions about games exclusive to the PS3 that I really want like White Knight Chronicles and Disgaea 3.
This is no longer an interesting conversation to you because you are already won over. You LOVE the PS3 and Sony is your baby's daddy. We get that. However, there are a lot of us who are reluctant to buy a PS3 because of the weak game library vs. the cost. It's getting there for a lot of us though. . . I think you'll be reading posts like mine for a good year or so while the game library and the price of the PS3 both improve. If I'm still considering whether or not to buy a PS3 by next Fall, I'll be really surprised (and WKC will have unfortunately had terrible reviews).
So these posts aren't for you. No one makes you read them. But calling them rhetoric is projecting your own bias (you assume other people have bias as strong as your own). Maybe it pisses you off that my opinion differs from your own, but no amount of pissing and moaning will make me stop expressing it.

I believe the trial version of FFXI allows you to do this (the one on the counter of GameSpot that costs $3.99), so there IS a precedent for FF games doing this. However, with no clue on how the online component works in FFXIII/FFXIII:Vs, "wait and see" is the best policy.

You're taking this in completely the wrong way. I'm not trying to say your opinion is somehow invalid, I don't need the explanation. Shit, I can see where you're coming from. There comes a time, though, where it just gets annoying to see someone post things like that in a thread that has nothing to do with the console itself other than that the game appears on it. It annoys me just as much as anyone going into Wii threads and saying how much they think the Wii has no games, and any other bit of nonsense that just focuses on the damn console and not the game. It's irritating.
This is no longer an interesting conversation to you because you are already won over. You LOVE the PS3 and Sony is your baby's daddy. We get that. Maybe if you tried to be less insulting with comments like "LOVE" and "baby's daddy" you'd get a better response. You know how many PS3 games I have? 6. You know how many I've bought this year? 1. Maybe the person who only owns one current console shouldn't be throwing out some kind of fanboy accusations towards the person who owns all 5, hmm?
Again, if you've got that opinion on the console, great, I just don't need to read about it every time a PS3 game remotely interests you.
So these posts aren't for you. No one makes you read them. But calling them rhetoric is projecting your own bias (you assume other people have bias as strong as your own). Really, it's nice to see you actually respond to the points I made before shooting down your little accusations. Just come up with some new ones and try to pretend like I'm the one with the big bias. If you keep repeating that to yourself over and over you just might believe it.
