Sony's PS3, PS2 and PSP will together have sold as many units as Nintendos' Wii and DS by the year 2011. So says former SCEE president Chris Deering, at the Edinburgh Interactive Festival, reported by Eurogamer (http://www.eurogamer.net/article.php?article_id=211207):
The EIF chairman presented figures he arrived at by triangulating Screen Digest and IDG data. He also took into account factors such as the growth of high definition and the grey gamer market, the emergence of new game engines and the increased ubiquity of Wi-Fi access.
He said the active installed base for hardware is set to rise from 316 million to 500 million over the next three years, with "two big mega-powers" leading the charge.
According to Deering, sales of the DS and any future iterations of the hardware will reach 150 million by 2011, while the figure for Wii will be 80 million. He predicted the installed base for PS3 will be 70 million, and said for PS2 it will be 90 million and PSP will be 70 million.
In other words, Sony and Nintendo will each have sold 230 million machines.
What do YOU predict?

I predict Obama 2008 and a second term in 2012. Wait. . . oh you mean aggregate hanhelds and consoles sold in 3 years between two companies? Couldn't give a fuck.

Wait. So it's good when it takes three of Sony's consoles to equal the sales of two competitor's machines?

Yeah, even if his figures will turn out to be accurate, I'm not even sure what point he is trying to make.

Fun with numbers.
He just adds up some stuff to show that Sony is better than Nintendo ;)
Can Nintendo add GBAs? Or can MS add PCs?

I predict this is stupid. Sony loves to talk about the Playstation Family when doing sales charts. They have to add in the PS2 in every sales chart because its sold roughly 140 million units. Without it the "newer" generation of systems from Sony wouldn't be able to hold a candle to the Wii/DS sales.

They should add movies too. The sales of the PS3 + PS2 + PSP + the revenue from the Pirates of the Caribbean movie already have outsold the Wii and the DS...that's synergy! ;)

This is the type of ridiculous bullshit I'd expect out of TeeCakes.
Anyone have the sales graph gif where Nintendo just stops selling and the PS3 skyrockets? That's basically what this guy is saying.

Microsoft wins this race, as they can count every XP and Vista install.
Oh wait, most of those computers don't have games on them?
Well neither do most of those PSPs or Wiis.
Heyy oooh! Bad Joke in the morning.

If sony had to bundle profits from 3 items to beat Nintendo's 2 then all the power to them. All of sony's launches were failures but what do i care i have a ps3 and a wii that i don't play.

He is saying that two generations of Sony machines equals one generation of Nintendo machines. That is not so good for Sony.

He predicts install base of PS3 to be 7/8ths of the Wii install base? Ummm... no. Not terribly likely. It's impressive to see the PS3 selling as much as it is now considering that it's sort of this generation's N64, but they're still relying more on hyped-up promises of future potential or fear about the 360's reliability than on the current merits of the system. Or maybe he knows something we don't; perhaps the new 80GB PS3 units will ship with a peripheral that gives blowjobs.

I wonder how far back we can go here. Will we start counting PS1 sales, and the PocketStation peripheral? Can Nintendo count those Hanafuda card games they used to sell before they even got into video games? Those totally ought to count too, or we're not going to have any real meaningful data!
Most pointless comparison ever.

How come they're not including the GBA, GBA SP and the Gamecube? They were all released after the PS2, how come Sony gets to include last-gen hardware but no one else can? Oh, right, because it's Sony.

His point (yes he has one) is that of all systems currently being sold on the market, the PlayStation consoles will = the Nintendo consoles. Just because the PS2 is last-gen technology doesn't make it stop printing money for Sony when people continue to buy the hardware today.
And it's straight-up profits everytime Sony sells a PS2, more profit than Nintendo probably makes on each Wii sold (even though it's vastly overpriced @ $250), he's speaking in a purely economical sense here that probably shouldn't interest gamers, but definitely interests anybody else involved in the industry.

The problem with such a comparison is that GameCube and GBA hardware is still being sold as well. And Madden 09 is being released on the original Xbox.
It's an idiotic comparison.

I'm not sure why he didn't include the Xbox family-- it would've made Sony look even better by comparison. As for the GC still being sold, I say show me an ad or it doesn't exist. I literally haven't seen those sold anywhere-- and you can't bribe a pawn shop to buyback those things today.
Their sales numbers must be pretty poor for NPD to continually not cover their figures every month, though. If you added them into any comparison, I don't think the GBA, GC, or Xbox software/hardware sales change things much.

It's because they don't. Over a year ago I believe about 10 GC's were being sold a month. Too little to be of any significance really.

Yeah really. Based on Wiki, Wii and DS still have a ways to go just catching up to PS2. Now if he meant PS3 and PSP equally the same sales as Wii and DS by 2011, he's smoking crack.
The PSP is hot but it's not that hot. PS3 is still a dog in the public eye.

So PS3 has to sell about 20 million a year over the next 2 1/2 years- when it's hardly sold that many in the last 2 1/2 years.
As we say in Australia (as made popular by the movie "The Castle") - "He's dreaming."

Re-read my post especially the words "in Japan". ;) It was done in half the time and I was wrong... it was over 8 months ago. DS has replaced the PS2 and taken the title as the best selling game system of all time in Japan.

Yeah but most of us even wonder if Japan sales are more relevant than the rest of us(the rest of the gaming world). It's leaning towards the "not so much" side of things. :o

Do Japan sales mean anything in the grand scheme of things. You say they got outsold in Japan. So what. It's not the world. The DS still has work to do.

There's a difference between active install base and sales. I for example bought a replacement Xbox after my first died, but only one of those is active. Well, somewhat active.
