The Home closed beta is expanding by the end of the month, according to PlayStation.Blog (http://blog.us.playstation.com/2008/08/07/want-into-the-playstation-home-closed-beta-test-heres-how-to-apply/). To do that, they're allowing more people into Home, using the application process of...downloading a Home theme. From there they'll select the people who'll be allowed in.

Today we’re announcing the expansion of our closed beta test for PlayStation Home to begin at the end of the month.

Later today, the PLAYSTATION Store will be updated with a PlayStation Home theme. By downloading the theme, users are submitting an application to join the PlayStation Home Beta test community. We will be using a variety of criteria including activity on the PLAYSTATION Network to determine eligibility for the Beta community. Existing beta testers have automatically qualified to be part of the expanded beta.

We’re really excited about this milestone and want our most loyal fans to be a part of the evolution of PlayStation Home.

In Europe, SCEE is also beginning their expanded closed beta, directly targeting consumers who have been most active on PLAYSTATION Network and PLAYSTATION Store. SCEE will be in email contact with their PSN audience very shortly.

It's not official, but I doubt if many will be turned away now. To me it seems to be a stress test for how Home will function with a lot more people.

Thanks to violentp for a similar submission.

It'll be nice to finally get to screw around with it and see if it has any real value. Assuming I can get in of course.

That's just stupid. They should just make people sign up for fileplanet, just like everone else is doing. It just doesn't make sense to use those criteria.

I think that's a joke referring to the Red Faction beta.

In reference to the Red Faction Beta story. You had to have a gold account and a fileplanet account to get into the beta.

If they're using time on PS3 as a factor, I've been recently turned on to Firefly (yeah, I know) and I've been having a ton of Firefly sessions streaming through my PS3. If anything should get me chosen, it shoud be that.

On a completely unrelated note, I wonder if you can throw chairs in Home?

Wait, so do you daydream while posting? Normally, when I daydream, I just kinda sit there drooling... then when I wake up, realize it was a dream.

Theme get! Also, I am very surprised that Sony is releasing the Talkman products here in the US (or at least keeping the branding). Here's hoping they do a full release for the PSP so I can learn a different language...or something.

While I know you were just joking about the theme costing money, this quote makes it sound like the more you buy from the store, the better your chances are.

SCEE is also beginning their expanded closed beta, directly targeting consumers who have been most active on PLAYSTATION Network and PLAYSTATION Store.

So, while not a direct pay to play, it does seem the more you buy, the better your chances.

Hmm, looks like I'll be downloading one later on tonight, too. Maybe I'll get in if I pick the ugliest one?

By the way, I thought violentp was pink, not "violet."

They mean a specific Home branded theme. It doesn't look too bad, but I'm going to stick with this PJ Eden one for now...then again I change themes constantly!

Because they are free.

I am totally ambivalent on Home. I don't have any real friends who even own a PS3, so the social features of it will miss me completely. Every multi-platform game I buy is for the 360 so I can play it with my buddies.

I would like to see Sony do something well this time around though, so seeing Home succeed would be nice.

Well....kinda. No offense to any internet friends, but I'd rather play a game on 360 with my real-life friends than on PS3 with people I've never actually met.

Am I retarded, or is there no way to start a remote download using the online PSN web store?

Or is it both?

No, you can't start a download from your PC/browser and have it download on your PS3. The only way do do this from remote is using a PSP and the PS3's Remote Play function.

I don't think I've met a single person excited about Home. The idea behind Home is ok but the limited lobby size, the inability to meet up with people from other countries (in the public lobbies), and especially the bombardment of ads makes Home a big disappointment.

I wouldn't say I'm excited about Home, but I'm curious to about it. It's way too soon to call it a "big disappointement". Hell, most of us have never used it.

Disappointment? I was under the impression that it wasn't released yet. Premature reaction, no?

Excited might be too strong a word, but I know there are a lot of us on EvAv that are definitely curious and interested. It will be subject to updates and improvements like XBL was on the Xbox. It will probably need to learn from mistakes/shortcomings, and hopefully it will only continue to get better. I'd love to see it work out.

Home's free, XBL isn't. But both have ads. Funny, that.

I've never met anyone who was excited for Home. Here that is. Elsewhere, some are showing an exuberant amount excitement. It's all about who you hang out with I guess.

When Home was first announced, there was a LOT of excitement here for it. Seems like most of it died on the vine while waiting for Home to ripen. Maybe that's a down side of announcing your wares too far in advance... the public gets distracted and gives up. There's only so long that people can eat hype.

I must have selective memory, 'cause I remember people here essentially going "WTFPS3SecondLifeLAAAAAAAME." (That's paraphrased, of course.) People seemed way more excited about LBP, as they should be.

Well, there was a lot more good will towards the product when it was announced than there is today. I'm not saying everyone was gung-ho for it, but the public air was more welcoming of it then than it is now (http://www.evilavatar.com/forums/showthread.php?t=26519).

People love hype. They lap it up.
