View Full Version : Nintendo - "GameCube's Life Nearing an End"

In what is fast becoming one of my favorite videogame news sites, Next Generation (http://www.next-gen.biz) is reporting that Nintendo has slashed its first-half profit estimates by 30%, blaming slow U.S. sales of the GameCube. Full article is here (http://www.next-gen.biz/index.php?option=com_content&task=view&id=1268&Itemid=2).
Yoshihiro Mori, senior managing director at Nintendo said, "The big drop for GameCube games was in North America. It looks like the product's life is nearing its end." He said developers are focusing now on next generation systems.
Fairwell, little purple nurple... Looks like the new Zelda will be the 'Cube's final breath.

Hell of a way to say goodbye though.

The xbox is dead, the cube dying (with a big bang in Zelda, though). Only the "lowly" ps2 remains. Kinda funny. While overall it's been my least-played system this generation, it looks like I'll buying almost exclusively ps2 titles this holiday.

There are 200 Xbox games coming out in 2006. That's dead to you?

The xbox is dead...
I disagree! (http://www.gamestop.com/comingsoon.asp?platform=26&sortby=eta&imageFlag=show)
If you can't find some sign of life in that list, then you're beyond saving...
Oh, and trolling is neither big or clever.

My Gamecube still has life in it. Fire Emblam comes out this month, after all. That'll keep my nice little system running for awhile.
Mmm...Fire Emblam...

It's nice to see that Next Generation is keeping the same quality of journalism that made their magazine so great. I was torn apart when the magazine got cancelled, but the website keeps the spirit alive.
And now I guess it's time for me to pick up one of those little purple beasts. I seem to love to get the consoles at their end of life. :D

If I wanted to know how to spell, I wouldn't have slept through english classes all those years ago in school. That, or used a spell checker. Thankfully, I'm too lazy. :D

Well, I think the Gamecube had a perfectly wonderful life. I personally take a stand towards quality over quantity on my videogames. I'd much rather buy 5 really good games a year than 50 subpar crapfests. All the games I've gotten on my 'cube - with a few exceptions - I can happily play again once the candle urges me to, kind of like on my pc and older Nintendo systems!
I am not worried about Nintendo at all this holiday though, they have a few great DS games slated in the coming while, and I'm getting one soon, so that should be awesome.

Relax. Chill. Calm down. Choose any two. I just thought it was kinda cute that he couldn't spell the name of a game he's looking forward to so much and that he wrote it twice. Drown me.

Uh, spelling is a very minor thing for the internet, I learned to ignore it.
Anyway, I'm not even sure why I still have my Gamecube except to play with one of my female friends or to go back and play the Metroids, my favorite series by Nintendo. In my eyes the Cube has been dead for awhile, gasping deep final breaths. BUT, I still have it. It sits in a small milk crate with my regular Nintendo and Super Nintendo, waiting to be fondly remembered.

My Gamecube is far from dead. Anyone who still doesnt own one is doing themselves a disservice, and that's a lot of you, I am sure.
Some people might wait for the Revolution and just pick up Gamecube games because of the backwards compatability. That's okay, too. At least that means the Revolution has another reason to be purchased.

also, any word with BLAM in it is funny
BLAM!
The Gamecube was never really alive in the first place.

You're not going to get any sympathy from me. I'm a pretty nice guy, but jackass remarks turn me into an asshole pretty quick (refer to the Xbox 360 launch list thread).
Speaking of which, you all will be VERY interested to see the news I have for you regarding the X360. Check the launch list thread here in about 2 seconds.
------------
Back to the topic at hand, I think it's about time Nintendo gets its stuff together and tosses the Cube away. Painful Cube sales figures are overshadowing the fact that their mobile divisions have seen a rapid increase in sales over the past few quarters and I'm quite sick of seeing them posting losses because of that purple piece of dung that sits at home in my closet.

I'm not looking for your sympathy either. I just pointed out to AspectVoid that my remark wasn't meant as a jab. Hint: The freakin smiley at the end. As for you, sorry to use a cliché, but you really need to go out a little more, buddy.

I doubt you can count on Zelda to be released for the Cube. I'm thinking the next major news about Zelda is that it will be a launch title for the Revolution. The DS and the Revolution/Controller are perfect evolutions for the Zelda Series.

I've loved my GameCube. I'm sorry to see that production coming to an end for it, but with the Revolution around the corner I think I can somehow get up enough courage to keep on going. But some of my favorite games of this generation (and in a few cases, ever) have been on the GameCube: Super Mario Sunshine (I don't care what anyone says about the backpack, I thought it was an awesome game), Pikmins 1 & 2, Animal Crossing (which kept my exgirlfriend entertained for hours), Wind Waker, Paper Mario 2, Killer 7. Various Monkey Balls. It's been a fine damn system. It won't be missed, however, because I'll still be playing it until the day I hook up my Revolution.

I've got to say, I really enjoyed the gamecube. Over it's entire life, my only beef with it was that it wasn't dual-analog (because it made for some pain in the ass FPS controls). Other than that, I loved it. Cheap, portable and the games were fun, exactly what I expect from a good console.

Nintendo could of sold more games if there were more games to be sold :p
I mean, I've been looking for a good Gamecube game for a while now, and the best I've come up with was Battallion Wars...
EDIT: Oh, and btw, I love my Gamecube. It's nearly tied with the XBOX as my favorite system of this generation, the only thing holding it back is it's extreme lack of good exclusives. I mean, the exclusives it gets are awesome, usually better than anything else out there. But they are few and far between...

My cube will sit and gather dust for months, then I'll rent something and pop it in and for a few weeks it'll be on for days (insert recent fond memories of Paper Mario 2 and Resident Evil 4 here), and then it'll go back to gathering dust.

Have not been playing my cube much lately but it was the first console I got this generation and I'd say of all the current generation console games I own my gamecube games always stand out as some of the highest quality and most entertaining.

I openly wept when Next Gen (the magazine) closed. I had only just discovered it a couple of months prior to it dying - so fleeting. Now my tears are of unbridled joy! :D

There was a news post a few months ago by some Nintendo America represenative that stated the game would come to the Gamecube, that it would bring nothing but disappointment to fans if the game if it didn't come out on its originally intended platform.

Yours wasn't dual-analog? Was it broken? Try moving that little yellow stick on the right, it's analog too.

My Xbox is dead.
It keeps saying Indigo Prophecy is not an Xbox disc or something.
But really, though, the Xbox (and the GC) have rather few exclusive games coming.

Wow... I'm shocked. Really.
/sarcasm off
And just 'cuz one still uses a piece of technology doesn't mean it's not commercially "dead". I still use my Atari 2600 regularly. But I'm under no illusions that it is "alive" by any means.

Hey, the Atari Flashback sold quite well. And I may pick up a Flashback 2.
It still lives!

Geez, lighten up. You can't post anything without being called a troll or a fanboy these days, which I'm neither. I think that word has lost all meaning. I like xbox, and still play it. Of course, I still play my Dreamcast, Saturn, NES, etc and those are really dead. Looking over that list I see lots of cross-platform titles (granted, many of which are still good games). MS has moved on to the 360, and I don't believe they're even producing hardware any more. Calling it "dead" may be a bit of hyperbole since games are still coming out, but it's not *that* much of a stretch as MS has ended the system's lifespan.

Granted, calling you a troll was perhaps a bit of an over-reaction, for which I apologize (hey, I'd yet to drink my morning coffee), but calling a console that has over 200 hundred games in development for it dead is a little extreme.

I havent touched my Gamecube in a long time, but I have so many unplayed games for it, it's scary. I think of them like a vintage wine that I'll get around to drinkign someday...but until then, I'll just savor the anticipation.

Yeah, listen to fitty. He's sorry. I worked him uber hard last night and he got a mild concussion and a chipped tooth from the metal headboard. I didn't think to make coffee when I grabbed my assless chaps and left this morning before he awoke.
Sorry, hon.

Definitely the weakest software lineup of the 3 and the upcoming games list for the cube has looked light since RE4 came out (probably the only game I still need to buy along with the new zelda whenver it finally comes out).
I remember thinking the xbox was dead after Jade empire came out, but the huge upcoming games list announced at e3 was definitely a relevation for me of the huge 3rd party support the xbox now receives.
Of course the ps2 will probably have extensive 3rd party AND 1st party support for at least another 2 years.
