View Full Version : Company nobody has heard of launches system that will fail spectacularily, in 2 weeks
Tiger Telematics dropped a bombshell about the size of a thumbtack on the gaming industry, announcing the Oct.22 launch of the Gizmondo. (http://www.gizmondo.com/news/item.asp?id=998) Not only is it less powerful than the PSP, it costs more, unless you get the cheaper version with advertisments shown when you power off! All this with only no retail partners, and only a handful of ancient games!
From the Gamespot article (http://www.gamespot.com/news/6135213.html) on the subject:
$399 will buy the system no-strings-attached, while $229 will net a system with Smart Adds. Already implemented in the UK Gizmondo, Smart Adds is an advertising service that sends commercials up to 40 seconds in length to a user's system up to three times a day. They don't interrupt gameplay, but will play automatically when a user quits to the system menu.

I've said it numerous times and I'll say it again: if you buy a Gizmondo here in the States, you're getting scammed. I submitted the press release to Engadget this morning and users have replied saying that not only are the units hard to find in the UK, but they can't even find games on store shelves. Add in the fact that the Widescreen Gizmondo was already announced and is 100MHz faster, includes 802.11b/g support, has a bigger screen, and tri-band support, and you have yourself the Gizmondo.

Yes, but only in the sense that the majority of the gaming community could care less if it flops.
I think it's a ploy by Nokia to make the N-Gage look good by comparison to something.

THEIR IN CAHOOOOTS!
I wouldn't even post this as news.

Well, since I already did, I doubt it'd be approved. :)

I believe in this context, the proper use of "THEIR" is "THAR".
Thank you.

Graphics look better than N-Gage but other than that it seems relatively similar. Even a very similay game line up. I'll just stick with my N-Gage for now because if all else fails at least I can call 911 with it. ;)

This is the type of in-game advertising I can deal with: the type that halves the price. It's too bad that in this case, it brings it down to still-way-too-much.

If I had to deal with a few ads a day to get an uber cheap PSP or DS I would deal with that. I mean, it doesn't do it while playing and you still have to buy games.

I'm not defending the Gizmod- I mean Gizmondo, but I have heard of it and I think failure cannot be clearly measured in mearly 2 weeks.
That aside, this device is a sham, and an ugly one at that.

The Gizmondo is the horniest console ever made (http://www.getthesugar.com/wp/?p=39)

Funny that you say that because everyone saw where the N-Gage brand name was going here in the U.S. after they sold less than a thousands units during its first week of availability (that includes the UK as well). To put it bluntly, Nokia was doomed after the first week the N-Gage went on sale and still doomed when they found out that less than 10,000 units had been sold by years end in the U.S.
You don't even have to be an analyst to know when something is doomed. Our mobile gaming market is too tight right now, especially with the DS, GBA, Micro, and the PSP all competing for sales numbers. Even if the Gizmondo overcomes this problem in the long run, it will face one crucial problem in the short run that Kevin Baccus and his gang faced when they tried to promote the Phantom over here: unfamiliarity. Consumers want what they recognize, and they aren't going to recognize the Tiger name and they certainly aren't going to drop $400 for it.

Sorry guys, the Tiger company that is releasing the Gizmodo is completely different than the one that released the retched Game.com. It is not Tiger Electronics. That being said, the advertising feature on this device boggles my mind. I mean, you're supposed to get coupons delivered to it and then show the Gizmodo screen to get discounts and such. Just strange...

Actually, if you look at the video of http://www.gizmondo.com/games/item.asp?id=100&cat=1 (Furious Phil) it looks quite cool. Well, the attack animation seems slow and repetitive, but still I really love the style.

Have you heard of this handheld called the PSP? It plays movies, allows homebrew (sort of), acts as an MP3 player, you can browse the net (sort of) and you can store pictures.
Someone even told me you can play games on it...but that is unconfirmed.
