View Full Version : Ghost Recon Advanced Warfighter Impressions

1Up.com has some impressions (http://www.1up.com/do/previewPage?cId=3144362) of the next-generation Ghost Recon game, Advanced Warfighter. Sadly, it appears as if the ingame visuals do not quite live up to what was shown in some of the earlier footage.
Does the actual game look anywhere near as good as the mindblowing trailer Ubisoft showed just before E3 this year? Well, disappointingly, no -- the next-gen dream is over, my friends. At least for the time being. The real version of Warfighter we played on the X05 show floor tonight was much more in line what you might expect from a nice, crisp, high-res version of a proper Ghost Recon sequel. But definitely nothing quite like the shock and awe we received when the first target video trailer made its somewhat misleading debut.
The article does state that "while the actual game isn't quite as gritty or beautiful, Warfighter is still a very sweet shooter." Nonetheless, the game serves as yet another example of why people shouldn't get so impressed by all those fancy trailers Microsoft and Sony have been showing as of late.

yeah, I thought that trailer was really promising. It didn't lok as obviously fake to me as the killzone trailer. Sucks.
BTW, I heard that advent children was actual gameplay footage from the ps3 remake of ff7! eat that xbox!

I really am not expecting much from any of the titles that cross over between this generation and the next. Stupid, stupid decision by MS.

I hate this generation of games already. Or rather, I hate all the lies and misdirection the game companies are feeding us. Do they honestly believe that we won't discover that their games don't look as good as the renderings? Insulting.

This is from the IGN hands-on
The game ran at a rough 60 FPS, but the slow movement and collision detection on many obstacles slowed down the game's feel, and if you add the regular, methodical pace of Ghost Recon in there in this 60% compete build, and it all adds up. Don't get me wrong. The game is indeed fun, but this early build made use our imagination a little more. The game we played was neither anti-aliased nor was it optimized. So, come launch and it should look spanking good.
Relax, Drama Queens. ;)

Yeah, I don’t know why they’d be thinking the game would already have its final look. They also seem to have an inflated impression of the original footage. It wasn’t photorealistic like they say, and it had collision problems. But I guess all those people who play Ghost Recon for the graphics will be disappointed if they can't gussy it up a bit by launch day.
Just in general this article seems to want to assume the worst except that they didn’t really dislike anything about what they actually played so they’ll toss in a jab like this: For friends, the game also comes packed with four co-op missions, with more to be released over Xbox Live in time. Still no word about whether downloadable content will be free. Our guess? Probably not.

Ghost Recon 2 had like 3 content packs for free, it could happen for this to.

It is insulting. What's worse is all the morons who believe the hype - see the ones who swore up and down that those Gears of War shots were in game. Or the PS3 fanboys who wet themselves over the Killzone 2 trailer, or the Final Fantasy VII rendering.
This whole next-gen has become a big joke. I didn't think anyone could top Sony's "EMOTOINs IN THE GAMEZ!!!11!! ToY STORY GRAPHICS!!1!!" sillyness from last gen, but several companies have joined forces to make that look tame compared to the tripe being put forth this time.
The only hope for me now is Nintendo, who so far is the only company to maintain at least a little self-control. I know that they hyped up the next system as being a Revolution - but at least that could still be the case, at least from where we sit now. They haven't bombarded us with fancy trailers and pre-rendered "screenshots."

Ok this is the one they released only a few months. They mean to tell me the stuff after that tank is blown up is rendered fluff?

I agree that all this misdirection is rediculous, i mean do they really REALLY think that the hardcore will buy into this stuff, i have a friend who was convinced that the killzone 2 trailer was gameplay. And i couldn't convince him otherwise. It was like running into a wall, the guy know zip about tech, and he was already sure that the ps3 was the greatest thing ever, and killzone 2 was a reality, well i can see why because sony told him so, and now Ubi is getting in on it, fuck me sideways this is getting REDICULOUS.

I hate to point this out, but "optimization" is industry code word for "cut the stuff that slows the game down." You don't Optimize IN post rendering effects and AA. Now granted 60% is probably still beta, so they probably aren't feature complete... but every project I'm familiar with has gone from BIG scope to NARROW scope, simple because of the nature of limited resources, specifically: TIME.

they're all a lying bunch of f*&ktards "Our game is gonna look like THIS" all the while the actual programmers/developers are going "WTF, yeah right, not in a month of sundays you stupid fool" guess that's what happens when artists run the show ;)
Back to playing Sensi Soccer, at least it looks like the screen shots

Wasn't it always common knowledge that the first ever gr3 e3 trailer released was just cgi??? Or are they comparing it to the recent trailers which lukd pretty good but nothing extraordinary. (like mgs3)

Just a thought - how long do you think it takes 'professional' gaming journalists to get cynical and jaded?
When did 1up become the greatest voice of the industry?
Well it's better than Kotaku or whatever that site is called.

Probably better than gamespy too but we all have a notion that all those guys are kinda garbagey. Ok so being better than garbage means final word sense when? Sure we can't really given to the hype. I'm sure everybodies been caught by that bastard, but can we discredit that last clip the released or the screens. It's too close to launch for those shenanigans.

Hmmm let's see the play games and write about it, play games and write about it, talk to some guy at a company and write about it, attend a convention and write about it, make stuff up for effect and write about it, rinse, and repeat as needed to keep job.
The 5th article?

You forgot to mention scoring free merchandise. Or, as the case may be, NOT scoring free merchandise and then using your publication to slam the company responsible!! How dare they not give you that Katamari Damacy figure? They gave it to the staff of <insert name of rival publication here>.

I bought GR2 (Xbox) full price and traded it almost immediately. Not because of the third-person camera, more because the game itself was as bland and unfanciful as a bowl of white water.

Whoa whoa whoa, now you're talking about inner office shenanigans. That's a whole new ball game. I say that would be in between the 4th and 5th article, making it still the fifth article I guess. :D

I liked it. Groups of terrorist walking around in open places for the picking. I find it's more cover-centric than the first. The loan wolf parts are interesting. As cheap as it is now doesn't hurt to give it a shot.
