So much for the "huge" news. The two PSP announcements are great for Square Enix fans, though.

FF XIII Versus being exclusive to the PS3 was a bit disappointing until I thought about how it won't be out until 2010. I'm sure I'll have a PS3 within two years. I'll probably have one by the time Advent Children Complete comes out and I'll probably be suckered in to buying it for the FF demo too.
PSP Parasite Eve is a bit disappointing. Maybe they'll announce that it is coming to the PS2 and/or XBLA and PSN as well.

Hooray for Parasite Eve on the PSP. Do it up with at least the quality of Crisis Core and I'll be happy.
Otherwise, nifty on the Blu-Ray stuff. I always like watching Advent Children, if only to gape at the gorgeous graphics. I'll definately snag it on Blu-Ray (I think my entire collection of Blu-Ray is animation aside from Planet Earth).

I've been playing Final Fantasy VII: Crisis Core and FF: Tactics War of the Lions while On vacation and I'm loving both. Crisis Core is like having a sequel to Final Fantasy XII that you can take anywhere. It looks nearly as good with great production values and music. I also love the new action oriented battle system.
If the new Parasite Eve and FFXIII for the PSP are anywhere near as good as their other two PSP titles, this is awesome news.

The thing is that they announced the game for unreleased cell phone hardware. I mean, we already know that some of the phones they have there are far beyond what we have available.
Also, it's unknown if they scrapped mobile development on both games to make them PSP native. As far as I know, they didn't mention anything about the mobile iterations of either game at this event, so that seems pretty likely. Accord to those at the event, Agito is now an Action-RPG (Monster Hunter competitor?) as opposed to the weird voice/card/action amalgamation it was announced as.

Yup, and FFXIII was a PS3 exclusive less then a month ago too wasn't it? I don't get the Parasite Eve love. I never played the game and just checked Gamerankings and the first one is ranked 76.5% and the second is 79.1%.

The first Parasite Eve was a really cool game for its time. Awesome CG, weird story with some unsettling sexual overtones, great art design, an interesting half real-time, half turn-based battle system with a deep weapon creator, and a really hardcore bonus mode.
The second one, not so good. Don't believe the GR scores.

Sometimes I wonder if by "jaded" you meant to write "hater." Parasite Eve has a big cult following a la Vagrant Story.
I guess the difference between FFXIII and FF Versus XIII is that the latter explicitly states "Exclusive Worldwide on PS3."
Advent Children was idiotic, but the fight scenes were pretty. Hell, they were basically the only redeeming part of the film. Square's not doing this out of the kindness of its heart. It's doing this because that demo will sell FFVII ACC copies like hotcakes.

Actually, it was a choice between "jaded" and "bitter" when making my screen name. Sorry, I've just been around for a very, very long time and have played thousands and thousands of games. In the game world, I'm the guy yelling at the kids to get off my lawn. There is a reason I have the name I do, I don't hide it.
Anyway, I understand the Vagrant Story love. It scored 92% on game rankings.com and I believe got a perfect score from Famitsu back in the day before they started selling those scores to the highest bidder like Nintendogs.
Looking at gamerankings, it was a legitimate question about the game and why it was a big deal. I'll see if I can't find a copy of the first one and fire it up on my PSP to see what the hoopla is about.

OJG, the best thing about Parasite Eve (1, never played two) was the soundtrack, IMO. And I'm a Square fanboy-- so for me to say that the gameplay/storyline/overall game left much to be desired should tell you how underwhelming it is.
I will say that the weapons customization was pretty cool. The game is beatable in a day, though, so an RPG it ain't.

It wasn't perfect but it was quite a good game, esp. for its time. I'll admit that I probably haven't played either PE game since 1999-2000, so who know how much of my enjoyment was due to the fact that they were solid adventure/RPG/survival horror-style games for that era.
And a 75%+ is nothing to sneeze at. It might not be perfect but neither game was a stinker by any means.

Parasite Eve was a very strange but well made game back in the glory days of Square... you know, before they started riding the FF gravy train into the ground.
You think so? What I remember playing is a game with an extremely overwrought story about some chick fighting crazy mutated crap because of highly active mutated mitochondria and flashbacks to the opera where it all began over and over.
Add in Resident Evil-style gameplay with a bad camera, fast enemies, and a ridiculously upgradable gun and you have a 3 hour disappointment. . . okay, if you want to count the one extra hour spent running endlessly about the park, then it had more and I believe it had a tower to climb in addition to the story-mode (hard to remember this from so long ago).
I'm not sure what I expected at the time, but I know that the first game was a huge disappointment and I can't even remember the second, so it was just more of the same or I disliked the first so much that I didn't play it at all.
Having said all of that, I would at least rent this title if it was coming to consoles because I'm not completely immune to rose-colored glasses.

Like I said, I haven't touched either Parasite Eve game in close to 10 years now so maybe I'm just high on the fumes of nostalgia. I just remember enjoying both of them, if only because I was dying for a console game experience back in the day (I'd missed the PS1 era almost completely and didn't really get back to consoles until the PS2 launched).
Plus I just like crazy stuff in my game, overwrought storyline and all. Any game where mitochondria are the main villain can't be all bad!
I guess half of my excitement for the PSP version of PE is based on the fact that, like the Chrono Trigger remake for the DS, this signals that SquareEnix is at least aware that they made a few other franchises back in the day besides Dragon Quest and Final Fantasy. This could be the precursor to the Vagrant Story portable/remake/sequel that I long for!

I already got Vagrant Story on PSP (PSXPSP, look it up), and it's sweeeeeeeeeet :D Really wish they'd come out with a sequel though.
What I'd REALLY like though is a PSP version of Chrono Cross, as well as another sequel (another NON-direct Chrono sequel).

Bringing a GameRankings score into it is just missing the point, IMO. They're rather meaningless, especially for games that came out over 10 years ago since there weren't nearly as many sources back then. Even now, look at Lost Odyssey, a lot of people loved that game yet it has a 79% average on GameRankings.
Also, PE did get a decent amount of hype back then, including being on the covers of EGM and OPM.

I seem to recall the game(s) visuals and complex stories (they're based off a novel, right?) as a primary selling point.
The staff of The 3rd Birthday reads as a Who's Who of Square Enix (which is a bad thing to some), so that's why a lot of Square fans are excited.

It's gorgeous, contains actually witty dialogue and interesting characters, and if it was named "Final Fantasy XIII", it would have sold 5 million copies. The problems are that the combat system and character system (leveling up) are boring. Rings would be interesting if they had more effect on the gameplay, but they don't, and the boss is almost as laughably stupid and unbelievable as the boss in Blue Dragon.
However, it is about 10 times better than Parasite Eve. Rose-colored glasses. . .

I didn't even mind the combat system, though it was firmly in the old ATB camp instead of the almost MMO-style system in FFXII.
Gongora was a stupid villain and if I was the developer I would have actually had the game take place over a several different periods of the 1000 years that the immortals have lived so that you could get a better sense that they essentially stand still while time and their friends and loved ones pass them by. I still loved the game though.
And alienchild, to your wish for a FF3/6 sequel, NO!
The only direct sequel to a FF game that I felt even remotely stood on par with the game that it followed was Revenant Wings on the DS and that's because the plot is actually easier to follow and it has lots of Balthier.
Other than that, Crisis Core was a good prequel/FF7 remake tease, but that's it. FFX-2 had a pretty engine but the story was crap. I don't even want to remember Dirge Of Cerberus and I'm one of the few people who actually kind of liked the gameplay proper.
I liked it a lot better when a Final Fantasy game was a standalone title. I don't mind remakes, but it was nice when you'd have the complete story in one game.
And the various games in the Ivalice Alliance don't really count as they don't really overlap at all outside of the odd character cameo.

Oh, all I was saying that looking at a meta rating isn't really an accurate indication of a game's actual quality, especially more niche games and older games.
Lost Odyssey was just an example that I figured a lot of people around here could relate to. :)
