IGN (http://xbox360.ign.com/articles/655/655583p1.html) has some hands on impressions of Perfect Dark 0. While some interesting details came out of it, like online co-op, they seemed a bit dissapointed. The game runs in 720p, so the imagery is sharp and clean, and the action ran at about 25 FPS. We were assured that the frame rate would settle into a smooth solid 30 FPS in the final build. Although the slower frame rate could have affected the turn radius speed, I couldn't tell. But circling around, either left or right, took a lot longer than I wanted it to. The controls also felt a little sluggish, neither as smooth nor as fast as I had hoped for. Again, I'm not sure if this was because I played a preview build, the frame rate was a little slow, or that's just the game plays. We'll have to wait and see how the final builds turns out.
There's also a few new screenshots (http://media.xbox360.ign.com/media/015/015335/imgs_1.html) up.
There was some good to say as well, but lets hope this stuff gets tweaked out.

<whisper> The Goldeneye and Perfect Dark teams left Rareware and formed Free Radical years ago. Why the heck did everybody expect this to be a good shooter? Because it still has "Rareware" on the package? Remember the new Conker? That's the current Rareware development pool, not the brilliant developers of ten years ago. </whisper>

I was never expecting this to be very good. It's not even on my "buy at budget" list.

Is it me, or are "random" screen shots from any game these days always looking like ass, but as soon as you see a video showing the same gameplay that the screen shots were taken from look 100x better?.

I still have some hope left.
Where does hope come from anyway? Stupidity, maybe?

Well, at least ONE thing is consistent with the Rare of 10 years ago. Shitty framerates.

When you stream a low-res video from some internet site or view a trailer that is cut together from fast moving images for cinematic effect, it tends to look better than actual high-res screenshots.

GoldenEye > Perfect Dark.
This game should be good, though. Maybe not great, but good.

The video I saw of this game dropped it off my list entirely. The main gun used in the video was the least interesting piece of art I've ever seen. It looked like a game from the 90s, and this is a next gen launch titel? I'm more excited about the next Quake.

My question is why this game is so far from being 'completed'? What has Rare been doing? You can't tell me that Conker sucked all of their time. They ported the 64 game with a graphical update. The multiplayer isn't even all that balanced and the level design was just average.
Kameo looks to be the best thing out of this studio since MS bought it. Everything else is a long way behind in quality.
MS bought a turd for $300 million bucks. They should have invested that in buying Sega. At least they would have gotten some good intellectual properties that they could have made exclusive sequels for. PD0 just seems underwhelming for a game that was supposedly in development for so long. Hell, Gears of War has had a shorter dev cycle and it looks light years better than PD0.
MS should buy Webzen before they grow too large. That company can put out a good game.

MS wasted their money. I hoped that they didn't, but N made the right decision when they sold Rare off. PD0 is far from impressive, and unfortunately an average (even decent) shooter isn't going to satisfy the Halo-ites clamoring for the Third coming of the Messiah Chief. And another 30 FPS shooter? Please. I know Halo ran at 30 FPS, but to me, it was too slow. Once you adjusted it was fine, but I was hoping that the "power" of the 360 would let developers achieve that kind of graphical fidelity AND the framerates to back it up. I'm sure they will over time, but man, this is looking like the Dreamcast launch. Hell, maybe the Saturn.

am I the only one angry at microsoft for:
1. not telling us which xbox games will work on the 360
2. not telling us which games will be available on november 22nd
I mean the system launches next month, and I still dont know which games I'll be able to play on it when I get it. Is it really that hard to tell us which games will be ready and which wont? my only thoughts are that most games wont be ready yet, and only halo 2 and fable will be compatable on day one.

I wish this game were great. I loved the original Perfect Dark more than anything but it isn't going to happen folks. Look deep into yourself. You know this game looks like ass. The footage with her on the zipline looks awkward. The animation and physics are unrealistic. The constant changing between 1st and 3rd view sucks. I am sorry. I think we are all going to have to wait for the original Perfect Dark to be ported to the DS.
But what did we expect? Rare is a battered shell of what it was in its glory days. No one is still there from when they made goldeneye and conker and perfect dark. And Perfect Dark didn't even run very good back then and Rare was on the start of its decline. It has only slid further since then with nothing good coming out of it for the last 5? years? Someone should put a bullet in this old horse. It is dead.

I agree with jacktion and the others who said the old Rare is gone and whats left is utter shit, MS got themselves one expensive turd dev on their hands :) (go XBOX360!!).
So anyway, onto the screens, the muzzle flash on one of the guns there looks like something right out of Jet Force Gemini. WHY THE FUCK ARENT THEY USING the "power" of the 360 to do some fucking FSAA? I mean even god damned jaggies on the gun? thats pretty sloppy shit there. OH, also no jumping in an FPS today? Your fucking joking, if you come up with any lame excuses that act as a balm to your gaping fanboi wounds then keep them to yourself, the limit no jumping has on map design is incredible, sure it was cool on PD1 but that was because everyone loved non-jumping Goldeneye, its just plain bullshit.
Ok so this looks like ass, and BF2 on Xbox360 looks like nothing special at all along with most of EA's lineup, I wonder if this is getting through to any of the Xbox fanbois yet??? Or maybe their just too thick to still process whats going on, who knows! Ok so if you don't have any graphics, and you don't have any original gameplay what the fuck do you have then? NOTHING new from last generation!

I'm really hoping that Nintendo can do some amazing things with their new system. So far both MS and Sony have totally failed to impress me with anything.
The whole 360 thing just feels rushed. Relying on PD0 is turning into a big mistake - Rare hasn't made a AAA title in 4-5 years.
I don't really care what IGN says. They're owned by Gamespy for fucks sake.

1. Whichever ones they can get to work by launch day. Halo 2 for sure.
2. Whichever ones can pass certification in time.
In other words they haven't told you because they probably don't know.

About backwards compatibility: don't forget here that we're not just talking backward compatibility, we're talking emulation of the x86 onto G5 processors. Remember when Microsoft bought the Connectix team that did Virtual PC? Guess what they've probably been helping do. :) If they're on board, it might work. If it's just Microsoft, feel lucky if Halo2 even works.
There's too much Microsoft hasn't shown working yet. Expect huge huge huge updates every morning for your 360. :)

Well I know the very last thing I'll do with my Xbox 360 is try some crusty old Xbox games, but I think the beter question is will the old Xbox games work on Live still. If you think that x86 to PPC is tough, I'm waiting to see how well Sony does with their PS1 and PS2 emulated on PPC, and if they require you to use a PS1 and PS2 mem card to save your old games I will be going to Japan to punch Ken Kutaragi in the back of the neck.

Ok, I have to admit this PD0 stuff is starting to get annoying. It follows the usual media trend of hyping something out the wazoo in previews (so that the publishers conveniently have something impressive to put on the box) and then trashing it in final print. Only with PD0 we have gotten this cycle at least three or four times now and the damn game is still over a month away from shipping.
