Needs more Serenity. =/

Truly one of the best movie's I've seen in quite some time.

...I may be biased though, as Firefly was extrodinary as well.

A History of Violence kinda makes me want to see it.

I've been telling my non-nerd friends about how good it is. With luck, word of mouth will keep people coming into the movie. For a movie that only took around $40 million to make, it looks like they've done fairly well so far.

I've seen Serenity twice, and I'm sure I'll see it again next weekend, with as many people as I can drag along.

Syl, like you I think it was one of the best movies I seen in a while if not the best I've seen this year for sure. Although like Tycho, (http://www.penny-arcade.com/) I think it's best if you watch the series first.

How is Serenity above History of Violence? That is the real question.

I didn't get a chance to see history of violence, and the trailer does raise my eye brow. That said, after seeing Serenity, in comparisson I'd have to go with it being the better movie. My friend said HoV had a slow end.

I'll probably see serenity again. Even my wife liked it, which is odd since she dislikes sci-fi.

Did you go the route of getting tickets through the NIN or QOTSA fan clubs? I did, it was worth the money IMHO.

Sure as I know anything, I know this. I aim to misbehave.

Shiat, I forgot to get the tickets to NiN. Well, I already had my concert of the month when My Chemical Romance came to town.

Serenity was amazing and Flightplan appeals to how stupid people are.

If a History of Violence did well in the box-office, well, it just would never do good in any country on earth. People in general are stupid, so a smart movie has no chance.

NIN is coming to Salt Lake City tomorrow. Alas, my funds are light, so I won't be catching them. Oh well.

I thought Corpse Bride was fairly boring. It only had a couple of memorable songs. I can't even pinpoint what bothered me about it - it was just... tiring.

A History of Violence isn't playing within 50 miles of me. I don't think it has as wide a release as most "big" releases. Anybody see it? How was it?

Boy are you in for a treat. I've never been huge about NIN, and I really only knew a few of the more popular songs. But anyway my gf somehow convinced me to go see them on the 26th. I've been to about 200 concerts in my lifetime, and they were easily in the top 5. I would have never thought I'd be saying that about a group who's songs I was unfamiliar with, but here I am saying exactly that... Everything was just perfect it was insane...

Serenity was among my favorite movies in a long time. This year the only movies that beat it were Batman Begins and The Devil's Rejects.

Your forgetting the DVD sales. That movie is going straight to my collection, and probably at 3 times the cost of a movie ticket ($20 for DVD). It may not make a ton of profit, but I think it will at least break even. A movie like that can only serve to increase the fan base.

P.S. I can't wait to see that movie again!

Serenity might do better next weekend. Who wants to go to a show based on a failed TV show? That doesn't sound good at all. Now that enough people went to it and like it and are recommending it, ppl might be more interested. Well I dream can't I?

novicius

No, I'm not forgetting DVD sales. I'm saying all-told, Serenity will be lucky to hit $80 million, domestic, overseas, DVD, whatever.

Joss, close the book on the Firefly 'verse for now. Concentrate on Wonder Woman. Maybe one day you can come back...

That's good, since the movie cost them $40 million and Universal told them they pretty much needed to break even to move ahead with the two sequels they already signed all the actors for.

I'm betting they get at least 40 during the theater run.

No, Universal said they needed to his $80 mil to green light the sequels. I'm saying they will be lucky to hit that with everything thrown in.

Oh i didn't question WW's movie existance... I do question why however.

Firefly/Serenity vs. WW.

As far as Serenity goes, the opening weekend can't be all there is to it. I heard their have been massive amounts of previews before the movie was even out. Is this money being factored in? Not to mention DVD sales seemingly go alot further than box office does now days. We don't have those numbers. The stuido was sure to break even. This was based on the sales of the Firefly box set. I think that's how there budget was setup.

heh. So Flightplan beat Serenity. Perhaps the marketing had something to do with that. Did Universal actually do anything outside of marketing the film to people who were going to see it anyway, and then saying "ok, now tell everyone else to see it too!"

"The future is worth fighting for"? Mulder?

'A History of Violence' was one of the worst movies I've seen in some time. It was like a Lifetime TV movie that they spliced in some gore and sex so they could give it an R rating. I've read countless positive reviews of it, some making me wonder if they're talking about the same movie I've seen. Also one of the rare movies where people all around me in a sold-out audience are muttering how lousy the movie is. I'm not a big Joss Whedon or Firefly fan, but boy oh boy do I wish I'd seen 'Serenity'.

Serenity is excellent. I was NOT a fan of the series (I'd seen enough episodes to be interested... maybe 5 tops... so I knew the basics of the show).

Wife didn't even see one episode of Firefly, but she like Serenity as well (and that's huge for her, a non-sci-fi person).

Serenity is an excellent movie and comes highly recommended. I'm one of those that completely missed Firefly in its first run on tv (probably for the better) and watched the dvds.

Admittedly, the movie probably plays way better for those that are already fans of Firefly, but either way, one of the better movies to come out of the studios this year. I can't wait to pick up the dvd myself!

Lutheran
10-05-2005, 04:01 AM
If the movie does 40 million or more world wide then the dvd sales will pick up the rest of the production and ad costs and make them break even while boosting the fanbase..its a slow process to build a franchise. The firefly dvds are flying off the shelves 2 years after being released at 30 - 40 dollars a clip. On Amazon its outselling Lost and Desperate Housewives etc..thats pretty damn good for a tv show that was cancelled after 8 episodes. It may not be enough for a movie sequel but surely it will mean the franchise will be even more viable in the future for a mini series or tv movie and maybe even another theatrical movie down the road. Hey I just like good sci fi and if anything movies like this being somewhat successful will make the studios more apt to fund sci fi projects that are off beat. DVD sales are now a huge part of a studios plans for a successful movie.

I tought Serenity was great. It had some of the best writing i've ever seen I've ever seen in a movie and easily the best writing I've ever seen in a Sci-Fi movie. I was worried about the low opening weekend since I did want to see a sequal but then I learned that it had a rather limited release and just reading this thread has given me hope since most of the people here who have already seen the movie are going to see it again. That's how movies make serious money: Return Visits to See the Same Movie. Not to mention how much the DVDs will make
