Safety first, soldier!

MTV's multiplayer blog (http://multiplayerblog.mtv.com/2008/07/24/alpha-protocol-love-interests/) spoke with Alpha Protocol's senior producer, Ryan Rucinski, who revealed that the protagonist can bag all the ladies in the game. These love scenes will be M-rated and along the lines of what was seen in Mass Effect.

“It all depends on how you treat them,” Rucinski said. If you have a strong relationship with female characters, they may help with missions. However, he told me that some of them are “bats–t insane” [sic] and can get you into trouble. “One may ask you to assassinate a high-level person,” he added. “Maybe that’s not something you want to do, but she’s really hot. But there are obvious repercussions.”
I really enjoyed the storyline of how the relationships built up in Mass Effect. Hopefully, these will deliver on the narrative so that the love scenes won't seem cheap and silly.

I do recall in Wing Commander IV that you could have a relationship with another pilot or the chief engineer. If you snub the engineer she accidentally equips your star fighter with no ordnance (and you won't know unless you double check on the fight deck before leaving). You can't even come back and pimpslap her after the mission either.

Japanese dating sim crossed with Hitman.

Hope someone doesn't do it in a flash game first...

If James Bond can have both his action and his ladies, why not video game action heroes as well?

Sounds like they have some decent ideas here... but Obsidian Entertainment + Sega = Fucking Fail. Hopefully they'll pull something good together, but mark me down as extremely skeptical of this game for the time being.

Alpha Protocol...should be listed in the bad game names thread. My eyes glazed over when I read that title.

I'm skeptical this will turn out so well. Real relationships are hard to portray realistically in fiction as it is...let alone a video game...Mass Effect did it but that's still a game on many levels we all wish games to strive for. My gut feeling is it's going to come off as cheap...

They're talking about bagging all the ladies in the game. I'm left with the impression that the realistic elements of the relationship involve accurate or idealized anatomy, care of Dead or Alive.

Stupid that they should be advertising this as a feature, you can screw the brains out of every female in the game. Only goes to show how most people wont take games seriously, the immaturity of these developers is amazing, seems they are all still full of teenage hormones.

Anyways, im sure the game will have a nice concept, but a very flawed execution, as is usual in all obsidian games.

What I find to be a step back is that you can't have the protagonist be a gay dude. Games have been gay-friendly for YEARS. Fable, Bully, The Sims 1 & 2, Baldur's Gate 2, Arcanum. . . it's hard for me to think of a game that featured relationships as a central theme where the gay kids were left without a gay choice. . . the only one I can think of is Star Ocean 2.

Now we have Mass Effect where there is a dude that female characters can go after (or they can go lesbian), but the dude can't be gay, and Alpha Protocol. . . another game where the guy can't be gay.

I really like making my character gay because it is hella funny in games that do the whole relationship thing in a funny way (The Sims, Fable, Bully), but in Mass Effect, I would have played the game more real and straight (the first time I played) anyway, so I kind of gave Mass Effect a pass for that. If a bunch of games keeping coming out that won't hook up my gay friends with hot man-on-man sex though, I'll. . . probably continue buying them if they are cool and just make more posts like this one.

Frickin' hell...

"bagging"?

Would you prefer: bed, couple, have, mate, sleep with, go to bed with, make love, make whoopee, roll in the hay, hump, play pig in the poke, tube-steak snogging, horizontal tango, etc.

"Bag" seemed to strike a balance by not being too offensive while also not being too puritanical or clinical. It's right in the middle. It's just that the middle for this particularly porcupinal verb is slightly offensive.

Hmm, let me see... Copulate. Yes, copulate would have been my preference.

Not every game needs to be "high art" (or artsy at all for that matter), just like not every film does. I enjoy stuff like American Pie or the James Bond films for what they are. Entertaining. Sounds like this game is in the same vein. If you want to make a political statement, or make people think, or evoke an emotional response in a game you're developing... great! But me? I just want my games to be fun. And sex? Well, it's pretty damn fun. ;)

Alpha Protocol is a miserable name. It sounds like a PS1 game.

Do you have on a pilgrim hat right now? Shall we burn some witches later for being dirty, sinning whores of Satan?

It sounds like a Japanese title that they think sounds cool and no one in the U.S. tells them it is horrible.

Maybe they'll come out with trailers that explain what the "alpha protocol" is and it won't sound like so much stupid military jargon.

How about "get down"?

It seems a little silly to me, especially since this is the second article I have read where they refer to it as "bagging". However, having girls get envious, or hating you for what you did, could be intersting. I bet that won't be the focus though, it will be about the bagging.

Wait till you hear their explanation of what Alpha Protocol means. You see, when an agent gets wrongfully accused, he can activate the alpha protocol and go underground...

I'm sure theres something missing to that logic.

Also - bean left out the best word for it, "Poke" as in "how about a poke, huh?"

I completely agree, when I read this headline I pretty much dismissed the game completely, that and the generic title.

Neverwinter Nights 2 was flawed at launch, but they patched the heck out of it and it is a pretty good game now (if you like those classic story-based RPGs like Baldur's Gate and Fallout).

Maybe this one will get a higher level of polish and won't be rushed out the door. If nothing else, it still has to get certification from both Microsoft and Sony, so it can't be too awful.

Was it in Wing Commander III that you could have drinks with your friend before the mission, then when you go out flying, your ship's controls are all inverted? Man, Wing Commander is awesome.

What the fuck? When did EvAv get to be so PC?

Are we trying out the whole "family-friendly" thing now? I mean, I realize this place isn't Something Awful, but it's not for kids either.

If you're really that offended, change "bag" to "copulate", but ONLY if you change your title to "Ninny". ;) Actually, change it to "seduce and make love to" if you want to change it as that is the more wordy and more PC version of "bag".

If they're going to say it that way, they might as well put Fabio on the cover and see if Harlequin wants to be the publisher.

but can our secret agent hit a button on his watch that causes his phone to ring and use that as an excuse for running away from his conquest and letting her know he will give her a call?
