View Full Version : Watchmen Movie Getting a Game
Variety (http://www.variety.com/article/VR1117989357.html?categoryid=13&cs=1) reports that the highly anticipated Watchmen movie will have a series of episodic games available on PC, XBL and PSN.
With the clock ticking on the film’s release, Warner Bros. has decided to eschew the traditional console videogame tie-in and is producing a pair of downloadable games based on "Watchmen."The studio’s Warner Bros. Interactive Entertainment unit plans to publish at least two "Watchmen" game episodes, with the first coming upon the theatrical release next March and the second around the DVD launch.
Who, err...plays the Watchmen?

What the hell would the game be about? This sounds like a horrible idea...

Something like the Iron Man (http://www.abload.de/img/ironman2008-05-0803-q1q.jpg) action (http://www.abload.de/img/ironman2008-05-0803-3hn.jpg) game (http://www.abload.de/img/ironman2008-05-0803-34h.jpg) maybe?

But will Alan Moore play it?

My first reaction was "NOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO!" But I can see it being possible if it's episodic games based around one character at a time.
But whoever decided that the Watchmen needed games to go with it hasn't read Watchmen.
Maybe it's based on this:

Sad to see. I haven't seen the Dark Knight yet in part because I can't stand all of the damn tie-ins I see everywhere. I'm sad to say that it looks like Watchmen will be going the same way. Why can't studios make a movie that's just a movie anymore? Maybe I'm batshit crazy, but...

The only way I could see this being good is if they cut most of the actual meat of The Watchmen out of it.
I'd play it if it were something like "The Watchmen: The Comedian's Bloody Trip To Vietnam". I could maybe get behind that.

That's a really lousy reason not to see something. The only reason worse than not seeing something because it's unpopular and undermarketed is because it's popular and overmarketed.

Quoted for the effing truth.
If you haven't seen Dark Knight yet, and it's out in your town (UK has wide release on the 25th), you're out of the band.
But whoever decided that the Watchmen needed games to go with it hasn't read Watchmen.
Hey, it's a movie, with a big budget, and based on a comic. In this world, you'd be run out of business if you didn't make a game tie-in.

I will see it eventually, but I do find all of the marketing and tie-ins annoying. They're everywhere, and whether I like it or not, are affecting my perceptions of the movie and dampening my enthusiasm for it. Maybe this doesn't affect most people, but it does me -- and I do marketing and promotions for a living.

So you're saying that movies can't make back the money that studios sink into them on ticket sales and tv rights and dvd sales alone?
Of course, my initial response probably sounds a little naive -- there's a lot of money at stake and opportunities for many companies to profit off of it. But wouldn't it be nice if it didn't have to be that way?

I just started reading watchmen since I saw the trailer at a showing of The Dark Knight, I got to chapter 9 last night. One of the best reads I've had in a long time, and I have a tendancy towards those "penguin classics" ancient history books(like "the 12 ceasars"). This is actually the first graphic novel(or comic) I've ever read. When I was little my parents wouldn't buy them, and by the time I was old enough to buy them myself I didn't care. I still don't care for comics(I've thumbed through them at bookstores and I just dont get it), but watchmen is truly on a different level.
I could see watchmen making a fantastic adventure game. Now there is no need to bother telling me its going to be a bad beat-em-um, I already know that, but I'm just saying.

Hehe, not saying that at all. Just saying, try going to a group of investors and pushing the idea 'Don't you think we have enough money?'.
But wouldn't it be nice if it didn't have to be that way?
Hey, I didn't make the rules, nor do I endorse them, just saying how I think it is.

Big surprise here

The surprise isn't that they're making a game, but that they're going the XBLA/PSN route with it.

Orphiuchus, careful man. I read comics as a kid but then went through about a ten year break where I thought I had outgrown them. Then I read Watchmen. Then I started picking up "arty" books that were recommended for people that like Watchmen. Then I fell into a money pit of buying comic after comic. I obviously wouldn't say that most, if any, even approach Watchmen's level of sophistication but it's still a slippery slope indeed.

I just finished watchmen, and needless to say I'm impressed. To be honest, it doesn't really make me want to read comics all that badly, mostly it just makes me want to read period. Usually I'm terrible about reading 4 or 5 books at once, but since I started at my new unit I've been to busy to really get all that much reading done(plus I have to learn Russian now). I think I'll finish the seven pillars of wisdom then go pick up some more of the fun stuff... has Neil Gaiman written anything new since anansi boys?

I am glad that the game is not taking place in the timeline of the GN. As there would be only 1 or 2 fights the heroes would win.
When I first read it, I thought it would be a weird collection of minigames from the 80s in pixelated form staring the Watchmen characters doing weird shit.
Play as the comedian and collect Vietnamese ears, like Pac Man. But watch out for the ones with guns unless you grab flame thrower ammo!
I can't think of any more really good ones.

I can see how an amoral Rorschach going around killing thugs could be a premise for a GTA style game. More points for killing bad guys in the most gruesome and original way possible.
Throw in Dr. Manhattan and The Comedian for some more questionable violence and you're nearly there. Who needs plot?

I have mixed feelings about this... On the one hand, I don't think that there should be a game made about The Watchmen (except maybe an adventure game). On the other hand, I've been thinking lately that movie tie-ins would work much better as small, downloadable titles. I'm not willing to shell out $60 for a Wall-E game that I know to be mediocre, but I might be willing to give them $15 for it if I really enjoyed the movie.

That's actually a good point. They're already talking about how much has been cut from the movie for theatrical release, and the movie is still 3 hours long (according to rumor). An adventure style game (maybe with clips from the movie, like Gabriel Knight III?) that fills in the missing pieces might actually be kind of nice.

Orphiuchus, if you haven't read Gaiman's Sandman series, that should be your next stop in comics world. It's quite a bit longer than Watchmen, but it's also my favorite series of all time.

Yes watchmen can be an awesome adventure game, to anyone who hasn't read the book. I just don't see the point. Its like somebody releasing "Shawshank Redemption: the game".
Anyone interested in comics should read Understanding Comics by Scott Mccloud. One of the best works about any medium ever written. Dissects art at its basic level, without alienating the reader.

As much as I'm sure I would love sandman and any other number of comics, I simply don't have the spare money and time.
I intend stick to books unless I come across something else on this level. The visual aspect of comics doesn't really do it for me, its just the way my imagination works. I prefer to create the images in my head rather than look at them on paper.

Jopystiq has some info about the game. I still don't have high hopes, but it doesn't sound like they're making shovel ware.
