Edge (Next Generation Online) is reporting (http://www.edge-online.com/news/mythos-beta-closed) more bad news for developer Flagship Studios, the beta test of their free-to-play MMORPG, Mythos, has gone offline.
Mythos' servers were shut down late on Friday, according to a statement posted on the game’s official forums, although the official line coming from Flagship’s Seattle studio is that the world of Mythos is only taking a break.

“We regretfully announce that on Friday, July 18, 2008 at 11:59 CST the world of Uld known as Mythos will be going on hiatus,” reads the statement.

“On behalf of all of the devs and community team we want to thank you to everyone for their support and assistance with Mythos Alpha and Beta testing and we will see you soon.”

Sad. I'm betting Mythos will probably end-up vaporware. I was really looking forward to playing it, it looked really fantastic.

Too much work has gone in to it for it to disappear. This will probably get repackaged for sure. For better or for worse. :\

they lost their IPs. no we didn't! the game is down. we're taking a break!

hopefully someone will pick up the IPs and run with them, but i wouldn't touch anything that requires a subscription from this or hellgate right now with a mile long pole.

I accidentally launched it yesterday then just closed it before logging in. Maybe that's why they closed.

Who do they think they're fooling at this point?

Mohammed Saeed al-Sahaf, I would imagine. He's about the only guy I can think of who would swallow what they're shoveling, and even then, it's probably only professional courtesy.

Too bad really. Mythos was a far superior game to their -ahem- flagship title.

Just goes to show you, one dude brought in to test the network code can make a game that is more fun than the one worked on by the rest of the team.

I hope THAT GUY finds a new home, where his talents will be appreciated. He did a really good job with what was basically an in-house side project that turned into something else.

Do not worry, we haven't closed our doors and we haven't lost any of our IPs. Production on Hellgate: London and Mythos has not ceased, they are both still being worked on by our team at Flagshit...I mean, Flagship Studios. Do not believe all the stories out there that we have closed our doors and lost our IPs, everything is fine! ;)

Not sure if this is the same guy, but the development lead on Mythos was (thanks to wiki) the same guy that wrote Fate, a very similar game. So it's not just random Joe Blow who is developing the game.

Not that HG:L wasn't epic fail, because it was. Guess it just shows that you're better off doing a more direct diablo clone.

People who can code for network games that can host hundreds to thousands has no trouble finding a job. :P

Haha, I suppose that someone like that shouldn't be termed "Joe Blow". But even being able to do that doesn't necessarily mean you know shit about game design.

The game is now being worked on by the Korean Publisher who was working with FlashGip.

That seriously sucks, especially since Mythos was, on the whole, a MUCH better game than Hellgate: London. It's really depressing to see a game that was so flawed in execution and delivery bring down a game that had such a bright potential future.

My coworkers and I (myself being in the Mythos beta, and them not) were really looking forward to getting our loot-pinata-smacking on in Mythos, before Diablo 3 comes along and fills that niche for us in a year or two. Now it looks like we've just got a long wait (or, I suppose, a return to Titan Quest) ahead of us.

The second I saw Diablo 3, I called my buddy and said, "you can hear the sound of the Mythos team crying into their shoes from here."

yeh disappointing, while it wasn't a fantastic game when i played it a few months ago the new overworld sounded good. and as a whole it had promise, it was mindless goofy fun.

not sure where this will go in the hands of a korean company

I'm surprised a large NA publisher hasn't paid off all of Flagship's debts just to get Mythos -- it would be hugely successful. Maybe they can't because of all the legal crap going on.
