From Joystiq (http://www.joystiq.com/2008/07/21/jimi-hendrix-joins-guitar-hero-world-tour/)

Activision today (officially) scored a major player for Team Guitar Hero (take that Rock Band!), landing Jimi Hendrix, who will make his posthumous "video game debut" in Guitar Hero World Tour. Hendrix will feature as a playable character in the game, and two master tracks from the fire-casting rock star will ship on the game disc:

* "Purple Haze (Live)" (recorded in 1969 at the San Diego Sports Arena)
* "The Wind Cries Mary"

Excuse me, while I touch the sky.

I love Rock Band and I love Guitar Hero 2, but I think they're going too far by actually putting Hendrix's image in the game.

I also hope they don't have exclusivity. I would hate for Hendrix's music to be limited to the inferior gameplay of post-GH2 games.

Live music is fine. A few of the Who tracks released for Rock Band are live....Young Man Blues and My Generation in particular are great.

and some bands are simply better live. Grateful Dead, anyone? here's hoping. Hendrix's best albums are definitely his live ones; Band of Gyspys, for example.

hendrix could go off on some crazy tangents live, so i'm guessing this is a tame(r) recording. good to see a real guitar hero in a game called guitar hero tho.

Live music in a rhythm game just doesn't seem like it fits for some reason.

You're a playing a guitar player, in a band, performing a live show. How does live music not fit?

Got to agree with you on that. Live music is never the same as the studio version. I prefer live music, but in a rhythm game, having music that isn't perfectly in time doesn't seem right.

You've got to be shitting me.

Absolute proof that you can't please everybody.

Hendrix single handily sold me on this game.

No kidding. This signifies greatness coming to GH.

I don't understand this reasoning.

Is it because tempos can change during live playing? Even click-tracked studio songs incorporate some tempo shifts. Most good rock bands were recorded live in a studio anyway, to capture the live feel.

And Jimi's backing band was tighter than a metaphor about tight stuff. Musicianship ain't what it was back then.

And to me, GH and RB are Performance games, not rhythm games. They evoke the live feel of being in a band, so a live song actually fits even better than a studio one.

I'm confused: Wasn't Hendrix already in GHI with Spanish Castle Magic?

And yeah, I'm stoked for Hendrix, unfortunately I'm a bit more stoked for Rock Band than GHIII at the moment. Unless the instruments are cross compatible, there's no way I'm getting both.

I can imagine playing Star Spangled banner: you'd see the weirdest stuff scrolling by "Create oscillating feedback, green green blue ? ? ?, oh forget it"

The instruments are cross compatible. So the Rock Band 1 and GHIII instruments work with GHIV? Excellent. Then I'll be picking up both discs as soon as they are out.

Wonder how the drums work from rock band with GHIV since they don't have both the cymbal and not only do you activate star power by hitting both cymbals last I heard, but there will only be 4 pads on the rb drums and 3 pads plus two cymbals so it'll be interesting to see how well the rb drums will work.

I read in JAL's thread that GH4 will show one less drum pad in its patterns when RB2 drums are attached. Whether GH4 will recognize RB2's optional cymbals as unique remains to be seen.

Live music is awesome. Yes studio music does 'sound better' but some music is just better live. Can't you people even appreciate an acoustic performance?

Oh wait we need our studio equipment so we can have no talent hacks cover up for their lack of actual skill or talent.

Whether or not they got Hendrix, the fact that Neversoft will do everything they can to make the songs simply difficult, not fun, underscores any number of songs.

The main difference? Harmonix. They have amazing sound mixing abilities and they actually know how to chart notes to match the music. This is why GH: WT will fail.

Seeing how the instruments are compatible I'll be Gamefly'n this. Hopefully the charts hold up because it doesn't matter how big the artist is, if it's not fun to play then it's just a waste of a good license.

Compatibility: I've heard that GHIV supports RB instruments, but I haven't heard any confirmation that the opposite is true. Any links? My googling finger is broken.

Activision knows for sure their drums work with RB1 but without any hands on with RB2 can't give a 100% there. However since RB2 is a gussied up RB1 I'd put the possibility at 99.9999899%
