View Full Version : Wipeout HD Delayed; PlayTV Coming This Fall for Europe

Two bits of Sony news from Eurogamer and SCEE boss David Reeves.
Wipeout HD, the long anticipated PS3 version of the popular futuristic racer, has been delayed indefinitely (http://www.eurogamer.net/article.php?article_id=191929). David Reeves pegged the delay on an unspecified but "really, really tricky technical problem." Reeves hopes the game will release before the end of the year. Wipeout HD promises 1080p gameplay at a full 60 frames per second, which would make it one of the very few games on the market that offer that.
Next up is PlayTV (http://www.eurogamer.net/article.php?article_id=191896), the PS3 accessory which will let your system function as a digital video recorder, will begin rolling out this fall across Europe, beginning with the UK on September 10. Reeves also confirmed that PlayTV should be coming to Australia and New Zealand after the first of the year. PlayTV will allow you to record TV shows while you game. PlayTV will likely not see release in North America any time soon due to the upcoming changeover to a digital broadcast spectrum.

Yeah... Given the inherent power of the PS3, I'm left wondering what the technical issue could be.

But I thought all those developers had managed to unlock the hidden power of the PS3, right Jack?
Right?

Gee, I wonder what on earth that could possib

Ah... well... maybe the tricky problem is that, um, since it's so tricky, seeing as how no-one else could figure out how to do it, and all,... they couldn't figure out how to do it either? Maybe?
the inherent power of the PS3
Err... h'yeah. *cough*

I believe it's a PSN release.
It is? Hmm ok Blu-ray is out then. I guess it must be that 1080p@60Hz issue as pointed out earlier.
They might as well just bite the bullet and downrez to 720p if that's what it was.

I don't think it's something that common. Looking at the game, there has been many other more graphically impressive games out there and even though it's at a 1080p@60hz, I'm not convinced it's purely a power limitation issue.
When did they announce the play tv on the ps3? Was it at last years E3? Wow...a year passes and it's still not out yet...is anyone really surprised? Wipeout delayed indefinitley, Home not out yet and no word about when.

Sorry for my stupidness on the topic (and lack of effort to look it up myself), but how would this whole Play TV thing even work? It's the first I have ever heard of it...wouldn't the PS3 need a TV tuner or something...?

I bet Wipeout HD will be scrapped, as there is another full fledged wipeout sequel slated for 2008 anyway.
i'm sure we all remember the delays and "technical issues" that prevented wipeout fusion from making its release date a few times.
shame, this was by far my most anticipated news from E3.

Two massive issues with the PS3 DVR:
a) Most digital/hd cable/satelite/FiOS requires a proprietary decoding box to access all of the non basic channels. In the case of FiOS, I believe a box is required to access any channels. Basically, this functionality is only useful to the niche demographic of high end media centers connected to rabbit ears or basic cable.
b) I'll bet solid money that Sony, as a media creator as much as a hardware manufacturer, will totally implement the "voluntary" broadcast flag. What this means is that if an owner of content (let's say, the NFL) decides that you don't want you to be able to record its content, guess what you can't do.
As a bonus snag, SlingBox, which offers similar remote viewing, has been on the precipice of a lawsuit since its inception (specifically from Major League Baseball). For those of you out there keeping score, no one bothered to sue Youtube until someone with deep enough pockets was the owner.

asimonk, this is Europe only, they're not launching this in any other territories.

The damn thing could launch on the Moon, and the potential short falls will still exist. Unless of course the concept of a cable/satellite box is completely foreign in Europe.

Rumor has it that it's due to seizures. (http://www.thesixthaxis.com/2008/07/22/wipeout-hd-causing-seizures/)
1080p@60hz and pumping backgrounds, throbbing music, it all may be a little much for some brains. I for one think this new bit of information is sexy as fuck.

Why? We've been getting seizure warnings since the NES days.

Exactly. WipEout is not near as extreme as millions of other games. Every game recieves a warning in the manual and thats it.

Actually flashing lights in the proper sequence do cause seizures in epileptics, and both games and TV shows have been known to do so. (The first episode of Pokemon, when it aired in Japan, sent scores to the hospital with seizures). They can even cause seizures in people that aren't diagnosed epileptics. The same frequency can also trigger migraines (migraines and epilepsy are believed to be related).
That said, I'm not sold on this theory. It's not even prefaced with a "sources tell us..."; it's just spitballing on the part of the website. And even if it is the technical problem, it shouldn't be that hard to fix. The problems only occur within a very small range of frequencies. Dropping the game down a few FPS, say to 55, and you shouldn't have any more problems.

I am not saying that it is not possible, of course they could cause seizures - but I find it rather hard to believe in this context. Furthermore as I said so many games have extreme flashy visualisation - and you can't even control the refresh- or framerate for PC games.
In addition the article itself even says it is rather unlikely
We’ve spoken to one expert on the subject of seizures who assures us flashing lights are fairly low down the list of triggers for epilepsy patients

Wipeout HD? You can't be serious. Have you even seen any videos of that thing?
EDIT; I'm by no means an epilepsy expert, I simply think it's plausible.

Yes sure, those are the ones I am judging from plus former WipEout titles of course.
Track is static with rather slow changing lights if any
Effects aren't fullscreen flashes (compare UT3 for example)
Movement is predictable
Track design is often bright
IMO very homogeneous design in general
I really can't see where this is any bad at all, except for odd technical things - then again as I said, for PC games you can't predict any of the technical things, which leads me again to the conclusion that this simply cant be the case here.

Remember how many people got sick from playing Marathon? We're talking about potentially hundreds of thousands of people potentially being exposed. Even if the story is bullshit, I see it as a legitimate concern in the development process.

No I dont remember that. What was the story?
Again: I can't see it. For me WEHD is the above described and many other games come to my mind where I *would* be concerned.

I think it was the 60fps in Marathon that was causing a lot of people to suffer motion sickness. I'm with you though, I don't get motion sickness in anything really. Never had any issues with any games. But with things like Marathon, Pokemon and decades worth of warnings, I assume it's affecting some.

Hm I didn't heard of that before... though looking at the video it looks so terrible, I'd probably get eyecancer before motion sickness :D
Hm well after all... I just can't imagine it somehow. But now I want to know for sure... lets see if I can find something out.

Do they hire epilepsy testers? How would that work, just find an epileptic and say "Here, play this game. Let us know if you have a seizure"? And how the hell did Space Giraffe pass those tests?

Probably rather doctors... or a standardised methods. Though yes, how did all the other games pass if this one fails?
