The reports of Cyan's death are greatly exaggerated.

Mercury News (http://blogs.mercurynews.com/aei/2005/09/cyan_after_12_m.html) has more.

I was about to prepare the company's obituary. But Cyan isn't dead yet. I sent an e-mail off to Rand and he answered, "We've had a reprieve. Managed to pull a rabbit out of the hat (that I can't give details about yet), so we rehired almost everybody. Crazy industry. It's giving me whiplash!" This company has had an incredible run since Miller and his younger brother Robyn founded it in 1987. They created "The Manhole," the first game on a CD-ROM. And in 1991, they began work on Myst. They released it on Sept. 24, 1993, and they changed the gaming world.
Looks like the latest Myst, End of Ages, isn't the end of Cyan Worlds.

Even when I dont play them I still like seeing myst games released. It reminds me of my youth I guess.

I feel the exact same way. I keep telling myself that I'll catch up on the series, but it'll probably never happen.

So, has everyone heard the one about how Square was going under and therefore called their "last" game Final Fantasy, only to have it make them tons of money to keep in business?

Not exactly the same scenario here, but it seems reminiscent.

That's good to hear. Don't want anyone to go out of business, even if their game bores me to tears.

I haven't actually. That's sort of scary to think about in a way, growing up without there being a final fantasy series.

Question: Final Fantasy isn't really a title that lends itself well to eight sequels. Where did the name come from?

Nobuo Uematsu: The company [Square] was almost bankrupt and in dire straits. We developed this game [for the Nintendo Entertainment System], but we weren't too sure how it was going to do. We hadn't had too many successes before then; so, we named the game Final Fantasy, because it really was our last chance. We released the game, and the rest is history!

Just so you guys don't think I'm making this stuff up. :)

Even if Cyan Worlds is off the chopping block, Myst V does bring finality to the Myst series. The games wouldn't be the same if the stories didn't revolve around Atrus' family, and their story has come to a close.

That said, Myst V was pretty awful as far as games go. The animation of the characters you talk to (in particular, how they did the faces) was top notch, and very impressive, but the game was barely a few hours long, and the puzzles were the easiest of any Myst game so far. Hopefully if they make another game, it'll be of better quality than this last outing.

I'd much rather see them focus on something new now, no matter what they do.

my fondest (sp?) memories of Myst was on a school night (a huge faux pas when I was younger) me and my Dad would play until the wee hours of the morning just solving some of it's riddles.

It is like my bumper sticker sez, "I found Jesus. He's in the trunk."

That is... unfortunate.
