View Full Version : [E3 08] - Sony Presser Recap

Sony brought the heat for all of their platforms at E3 today: PS2, PS3 and PSP. Here's a recap of their press conference.
- Little Big Planet [PS3]. Coming in October 2008.
- Buzz [PS3]. Sony's trivia gameshow comes to the PS3 in September, with regular updates made available as DLC.
- New LEGO Batman Bundle [PS2]. That's right, PS2. The bundle will include the PS2 system, the LEGO Batman game and a DVD of Justice League: A New Frontier
- Single Sign-On for Playstation. You'll now have a single sign-on for all Playstation properties, PS3, PSN, Playstation.com and more.
- Ratchet & Clank Future: Quest for Booty [PSN]. New, short form Ratchet and Clank game for PSN. Looks like the beginnings of episodic content for the series. No release window was mentioned The game will release this summer and will set you back $15.
- New PSN Games [PSN]. New games for the Network: Crash Commando, Fat Princess, Pixeljunk Eden, Pain Amusement Park, Flower, Siren: Blood Curse and a new Ragdoll Kung Fu.
- Gran Turrismo TV [PS3]. A new PPV video service integrated into the Gran Turismo 5: Prolouge. Lots of content for the car enthusiast. Original content, broadcasts of international racing events, and shows like BBC's Top Gear will all be made available through this service.
- Home [PS3]. There will be title specific rooms made available. So you too can have the Warhawk control center in your room.
- PSN Movie Store [PSN]. Starting today, you can rent and purchase movies over PSN. Watch them on your PS3, or send them to your PSP. Rentals will run from $2 to $3 for TV shows and $3 to $5 for movies. Purchases will begin at $15 (although they won't be in HD for the moment)
- Ratchet & Clank PSP Pack [PSP]. A new hardware bundle featuring a silver PSP Slim, Ratchet & Clank: Size Matters, a UMD of National Treasure 2: Book of Secrets, a voucher for Echochrome, and a Memory Stick for $200. Will be available in October.
- Resistance: Retribution [PSP]. This PSP sequel to the original Resistance plays in the third-person. Available Spring 2009
- Youtube Integration [PS3]. You'll be able to upload videos from some games (MLB 09 was mentioned) straight to a PS3 channel on YouTube.
- Life W/ Playstation [PS3]. Get news, weather and more on your PS3 starting later this month.
- DC Universe Online [PS3/PC]. The long in development DCU MMO was unveiled.
- 80GB PS3 $400 [PS3]. Not so much a price drop as a replacement for the current 40GB version, which is apparently being phased out.
- God of War 3 [PS3]. A trailer was shown, but with no gameplay. Sometime in 2009
- inFamous [PS3]. An open world action game where you have super powers of some sort. Some nice destructible environments. 2009
- MAG: Massive Action Game [PS3]. From Zipper Interactive (the studio behind SOCOM) a truly massive game. 256 players at once, divided into 8 person squads. Characters advance in level and gain skills as they go. Sounds like a cross between a tactical shooter and an MMO. A trailer was shown, but it was all pre-rendered. No date was given, but it won't be out this year.

Solid show, nothing more nothing less. On par with MS.
Not much for me in '08 on the PS3 apparently. '09 with GoW3 will be better I think.

Will the $400 80GB system be the existing $500 80GB SKU, or the 40GB SKU with a larger hard drive (no PS2 back compat)?

You didn't mention MGS4... you really should considering just how many times Jack Tretton mentioned it in the conference. Did you know that it's exclusive and can ONLY be done on the PS3?

Sounded like the 40 gig with an 80 gig HDD.
What? No way...they didn't just do another COMING SOON press event did they? it was a whole lot of nothing...the whole thing was to try to convince people that the ps3 is great. No release dates really...they could have done it in a press release.
Home isn't ready yet...and no release date!
Mag looks interesting although how do you have squads and leaders if people don't log in for a few days at a time? When you do log in how do you know where to go/what to do. It seems like a great idea, but will be hard to pull off.
DC online looks a little crappy, but it's still early.
I thought it was a very poorly put together event. Jack Tretton should really have someone else do the MC'ing because he is stumbles over every other word, says "awesome" far too much, and is turning into quite the fatty.

Pretty weird that they didn't reveal even a beta release date for Home.

I'm pretty sure the 80GB "core" is replacing the 40GB ps3. (Same hardware just larger drive.) I'm guessing the 80GB bundle with BC and Game (MGS) is probably gonna stick around.

The strangest thing is that neither Sony or Konami has released sales figures on MGS4 for NA (they have for Europe and Japan). I wonder if that's because the numbers are actually somewhat disappointing. Otherwise, why not yell it from the rooftops?

Too few exclusives! Only RFoM2, LittleBigPlanet, Killzone 2, and Buzz for this year as the standouts!?? And still no real ETA for Home. Microsoft definitely took the cake. I own all the consoles and was disappointed by Sony's showing and even more so by Nintendo's. Microsoft had the biggest surprises and the most games.

i would guess the objection would be...show us something new, not something that already happened. MS could have shouted about gears of war, but they have new stuff (like gears of war 2!) to shout about. i dunno, that's all i can think of.

I'm not really impressed compared to MS' Dashboard updates and Netflix integration. Gamewise...decent show...but nothing unexpected. FFXIII was a big blow to Sony in my eyes, and I was kinda expecting something big to counter it.

Strange priorities Sony had for this press event. Spending so much time on PS2, video downloads (kind of undercuts their Blu-Ray argument), rejustifying Cell and Blu-Ray technology and the really pathetic segment where they strong armed third party devs to say nice things about developing on the system. The fact that they even had to do that is tacit acknowledgement that the SDK/Architecture/Support has issues if they need to do this so late in the game.
Infamous looks really good though, and the Resistance PSP (and PS3 for that matter) game looks promising too.
I think the fact that so many of the games shown were just CG trailers rather than gameplay and were scheduled for 2009 only perpetuates the stigma that PS3 is the system where you have to keep on waiting for the good stuff to arrive someday.
At least it was better than Nintendo's abortion of a press conference.
Solid show, nothing more nothing less. On par with MS.

HAHA...yeah right. Not even close to "on par" What did Sony come out with? A classics program so I can buy COD3 for $30?? A Video on demand service that MS has had for over a year and everyone knew was coming eventually? Ohhh i know...it was a ratchet and clank psp bundle...right?
HAHA you're kidding yourself buddy. MS is revamping xbox live as a whole. They snagged one of the only big time exclusives sony had left in Final Fantasy. As well as Amazing games coming out this year...
What's Sony have? COMING SOON yet again...

Kinda rough on the morale to be releasing a video store after the Live version has been out for a while. I'm not sure how popular it is. Oh yea, and the announcement of Netflix on the 360.

Yeah, I hear what you're saying but keep in mind that they did show quite a bit of MGS4 footage throughout the early parts of the press conference.
That show was awfull.
I've been sitting through their whole fuckin lifestyle announcements with no problems and the excact second God of War 3 came up the connection broke and I didn't see anything. Oh well okay, I saw the logo as it was fading out, the last second of the trailer.
That is so ironic, someone must really hate me.

The game is $60, the DualShock is like a $5 premium over a SIXAXIS at retail. A $35 premium ($500 - $400 - $65) for backwards compatibility wouldn't be bad in my mind, but seems odd that they'd price it like that with an 80GB SKU at $400.

It's very embarrassing coming from a company who owns and operates both TV and movie studios. Everyone assumed Sony would be the one breaking ground on this one... you know, an entertainment company not a computer company but then I guess Apple paved the way for that.

I was actually fighting the urge to fall asleep during the Sony Conference.
Objectionably speaking, Microsoft had the stronger show with the whole FFXIII coup. While Sony did have some cool things to show, like inFamous and God of War 3, they really didn't have the same strong line-up in terms of holiday releases.
What I'm wondering: What happened to all the great speakers? I miss the days when Allard walked around stage with a swagger and Miyamoto burst out onto the stage in some kind of costume. Ah well, at least we got --shudder-- Buffy, or whatever her name was.

I think I did not get a clear sense of a message from the Sony announcement. MS landed some nice body blows with their new features and the Sony side is trying to sell me a PS2.
Probably the big news is the 80GB at 400 nicely cuts off the 60gb XBox at 349, maintaining the point of sale advantage of Sony. If only MS had delivered a 50 price cut across the board...
If Sony includes back compat with thier new 80GB SKU then its a substantial value add. If its just 40 GB more space, then whatevah.

I was kinda waiting the entire conference for some sort of jaw-dropping announcement...and it never came. And to think, Bungie hasn't even shown their hand yet. I think we can safely say MS came up on top in terms of wow-ing people.

A little weak (although more to look forward to than Nintendo) but at the end of the day, the only people who will care are message board folks like us. Sales numbers will probably continue on as they have all year with Nintendo blowing the other two out of the park.
I assume we'll see more cool stuff for PS3 at TGS.

As we MUST make judgements about these sort of things.
Microsoft first. FFXIII is the annoucement of the show.
Sony second. Not so much on their own announcements, but that most of the good games will be coming to the PS3 as well.
Nintendo last. Blech. I'm glad I have a 360. The Motion Plus I think COULD be big. Will it? Unfortunately no.

Not amazing, but not bad either. I couldn't care less about the video stuff, personally, but I guess that's cool for those who care. I'm just really happy to see the PSP stuff: Resistance, Super Stardust, Valkyria Chronicles, etc...
The beginning of next year is going to be damn crowded. InFamous, Resident Evil 5, KZ2, etc...

A decent show, marginally better than the MS one because I feel they put more emphasis on things actually by Sony and not other companies. And while FF13 was a big deal, its again MS saying "hey, we're getting another property that was already on PS3 for 3 years now"
Good for gamers for sure, and developers who already invested in multiplatform tools and development pipelines... but its not one-upping Sony in any way.
Sony had the most to lose by default this gen and were always going to. Rising game costs means more multiplatform titles in general, and there was no way Sony would have the userbase advantage they did with PS2. Obviously once-exclusive properties were going to leave.

Are you talking about a real price cut or the "effective" price cut of the 80gig sku replacing the 40g sku at the $400 price point?
If you're waiting for a real price cut I wouldn't hold my breath. However if you have the TV to support it I'd jump all over the 80g sku when it gets to $400.
I bought my PS/3 and haven't regretted it for a second. Just the quality of native blu-ray movies is jawdropping (46" A650 Samsung 1080p TV). This is specially since you can get Blu-ray movies from Netflix now. I saw the first episode of Planet Earth on Blu-ray and never looked back.

I was going to get one at Christmas but I may hold out for a $299 price point since what was shown at E3 really didn't really excite me. LBP is the main game I want with a side helping of Valkyrie Chronicles... and Afrika but that isn't even coming out in the US.
So I'll have to see just how big of a draw LBP is when it comes out to see if it pushes me over the edge.

Part of it is that I have trouble finding a lot of time to game these days. So I would like to have a PS3 but it would have been just to plug in gaps in genres or series (that I'm into) in the 360's and handhelds game libraries. It's not actually like I need more games to play.
FFXIII is pretty much the final straw with other stuff like Silent Hill, Tales, RE and other JRPGs being available elsewhere. So it means I can pretty much be content with what I have almost indefinitely and pick up a budget priced PS3 and a ton of great cheap games well down the road. Great for my bank account!

Huh? Its a big announcement but makes no difference to me and isn't showing anything other than MS getting parity. We've expected more games to go multiplatform. Maybe I'd have cared if it was "FF13 no longer on PS3 at all" but it wasn't so again, huh? SDF how?
SDF would be complaining and saying I'd boycott it, like that twit in the youtube video.
Saying I don't get excited about MS showing off another multiplatform game is not SDF. Jesus fucking christ, you people take this shit way too seriously.

Infamous looked great, LBP looks awesome as well. The video store looks sweet, and the ability to download to PSP is huge. MAG seems like it could be fantastic, but as someone else said, it's all about execution.
Aside from that, bleh. They have so many games they could have shown off, and they didn't. Gran Turismo 5? Nothing except for GTTV. Twisted Metal? Nothing. Wipeout HD? Nothing. That Heavy Rain game? Zilch. More details on Home? Zilch. I'm guessing it was planned, though, since all the titles were American titles, so they will probably show GT5 at TGS and Wipeout and whatnot at Leipzig or something. They really need some other titles aside from all the stuff coming from Insomniac. I literally said "Another?!" out loud when they showed Resistance for PSP.
It seems that Sony wanted to focus on their first party games, as opposed to Microsoft, who is focusing on third party games (probably because they have little to no first party). I guess it's just a matter of focus and what they wanted to accomplish, though. You also you have to admit that Sony could have saved the store redesign, in-game XMB, trophies etc. for E3, which would have been a lot more of a counter to the dashboard update.
Does anyone else feel like both companies are focusing on only a handful of games, as not to overwhelm the consumer? Microsoft showed very few titles, and so did Sony. Maybe they are both taking an approach of focusing on a core set of titles, so that people don't get overwhelmed with 20 or 30 titles that they need to buy? I mean as is, we're going to be spending hundreds and hundreds of dollars this season between Rockband 2, Resistance 2, LBP, Gears 2, Left 4 Dead, Fallout 3, Fable 2, and whatnot. Could you imagine if they had 10 other big titles coming this fall/winter? People would be totally overwhelmed, the titles wouldn't sell as well, and publishers and developers would risk losing a LOT Of money.

Infamous looked great, LBP looks awesome as well. The video store looks sweet, and the ability to download to PSP is huge. MAG seems like it could be fantastic, but as someone else said, it's all about execution.
Infamous and MAG did look great... mind you, so did Lair and Heavenly Sword when they were at E3.
But if even just those two live up to their promise, it might be enough to make me buy a PS3. I'll be watching with interest.

I think if I had to rank the conferences it would easily be MS, Sony and dead last (is there a 4th) Nintendo. I thought Sony was going to announce some killer stuff but most of it was just a rehash of the stuff they've showed us. We know Resistence 2 and LBP will be cool. We expected a video store. Where were the big surprise announcements?
I've got a 360 and PS3 and based on the conferences the 360 will continue to get the lion's share of the game time.

Definitly a solid confrence, I'm hoping that they will have demos of most of the games shown on the floor so I can read about them tomorrow.
The weather and youtube announcements might not seem big but just look at how popular the weather/news is on the Wii and the popularity of the Halo 3 game clips.
Also does the PS2 ever die? People laughed when Sony said it would last 10 years but its rapidly approaching that date and it hasn't even been sub $100 yet.

Also I don't know if anyone cares but the movie service does have about 50 movies you can rent in HD but you can only buy them in SD. I sadly may have to cave in and buy some content seeing as they have season 3 of It's Always Sunny in Philadelphia on the store.

Solid show, nothing more nothing less. On par with MS.
Not much for me in '08 on the PS3 apparently. '09 with GoW3 will be better I think.
Yeah, I am a bit disappointed that it seems like it will be yet another year for the PS3 to really hit it's stride.

This says everything I have to say about it very well.
The only difference is that I'm also very interested in their Naruto exclusive. . . I think at this point, I'm really searching for reasons to spend money on a PS3 though.

Its odd that the videos they released on the PSN are way better then anything that was in the confrence. The Killzone, Rachet, and Motorstorm trailers are awesome and are not prerendered.

they have the first three seasons of sunny for free, which is uber cool because they usually only have the newest season of shows. they also have the first three seasons of arrested development (all of them?).

Parity as far as the quality of the E3 conferences? Ok, fine. They both put out a decent showing. The rest of you analysis was very shallow and that is what boggled the mind.
More multiplatform titles? Sure! Making one of the biggest, if not the biggest "system seller" franchises in Sony's aresnel going MP? I would have thought Sony would have done anything and everything in their power to stop that, up to buying the rest of Square/Enix. I have yet to hear or see a PS/3 title that justifies the purchase of the console for gaming. However the requirement to have a Blu-ray player in my home theater and (based on everything I'd heard up to that point) the certainty of FF13 being PS/3 exclusive pushed me over the edge to buying a PS/3.
Long story short I believe that game console history would be much different now if FF hadn't defected to PS/1 from the Nintendo camp.
Granted MP isn't a complete defection but based on the GTA experience it will only have a tiny fraction of the impact on the PS/3 that it could have had... that could have been the boost PS/3 needed to enthrone itself again as undisputed *game* console king.
One day the PS/3 won't be the about the most cost efficent device to buy for blu-ray+. Nor will the back and forth cannibalization of online service functionality provide Sony with the extra power they need to continue gaining ground on the 360. They need the exclusive "killer apps" with the power of a FF to help them make huge strides that can only come by moving a million systems in the launch window of a hot exclusive title. Not the baby steps a MP title will allow them to make.
The flippant "3 years after the game was already on the PS/3" was just dumb and doesn't pay any respect to the tidal wave like impact games like GTA and FF have on not just the games industry but mass media as well.
Even without numbers I don't think I'd be going too far out on the limb to say that GTA360 cost Sony a lot of console sales and brought a number of those sales to the 360. Unlike SOME companies MS and Sony really need those attach rates for the licensing fees to pay for the bath they take on the hardware.
With the one game that I was anticipating for the PS/3 going to 360 it looks like my PS/3 will remain as a blu-ray player only. I don't mind, I still don't regret a cent of my purchase of the console. Blu-ray viewing has spoiled me for anything less :( And who knows, now that I have the console I don't mind dropping some cash on LBP... but I wouldn't have bought a console for it.

Agreed. I would have thought that Sony would make a concerted effort to keep away from CG trailers after the Killzone fiasco a few years ago. Strange that they had this in game footage and didn't show it.

I didn't notice this until watching the press conference - but they're bundling a UMD copy of National Treasure 2 in the new Ratchet family PSP bundle? I didn't think anyone actually made UMD movies anymore, and was surprised to see one actually featured as part of a new hardware bundle.

I'd say there are plenty of games to play on PS3. Really, if there is a reason to buy a 360 for games, there is a reason to buy a PS3 because the libraries are 90% the same. I don't see that having largely the same games makes having a 360 the better choice (especially given its reliability, cost for online play, loudness, and lack of HD Disc format for a $50 difference in price)

Again, you have a PS3 but will now choose to get FF13 for Xbox? Why? It was developed primarily on the PS3, will play at the very least as good on the machine, will likely be on one disc, will operate a lot more quietly, have the same features.
I am not understanding the "360 by default" logic that seems to be so abundant here. From 05-06 there were a lot of "exclusive by default" games for 360 because there just was no PS3, but if you think that really matters today in light of those early games (which I owned) being mostly pretty rough around the edges and having superior sequels today... again, I don't understand how the PS3 is apparently so disadvantaged.

You obviously don't have any friends with 360's. Out of all my gaming friends the majority of them own 360's so even if my unit breaks down 15 different times, I'm still going to get the 360 because that's where my friends are playing.
In my experience PS3 gamers tend to be mostly single player gamers or ones that are heavily invested in Japanese geared gaming. Most 360 gamers are western game oriented and are mostly social multiplayer gamers. And on top of that, everyone I know with a PS3 also owns a 360 but not the other way around. These are people I know in real life... not people I've met online.
So to me and the vast majority of gamers I know and play with online, that's why all multiplatform games are 360 just by default. When I get my PS3 it will be for exclusives only. Think about it, you have 20 friends and they are all getting COD4 for the 360 and play all night long together but you say "no way, I want the PS3 version" since they look the same.

You do know there are alot of games that were released already for the 360 that never came out on the ps3 right? I mean sure current titles are being made for both but alot of the older titles never went multiplatform and their are alot of good games...I would even go so far to say its a 3 to 1 library of 360 to ps3 games (and no not last gen games are not included.)
Its very bizarre how much you argue for a system you do not own.
