Electronic Arts and Planet Combat have announced (http://biz.yahoo.com/bw/050928/285366.html) the upcoming Battlefield 2 "Meta Game" that keeps track of player stats from round-to-round.
Planet Combat, a leading internet community organizer, today announced that it has joined forces with Electronic Arts to create an online game service that will expand the world of Battlefield 2. Designed by Planet Combat, BF2 Combat is a 'meta game' which allows players to carry over their military campaigns from round to round. Planet Combat also announced today that it will be administering the worldwide ranked server network for Battlefield 2. Information about the network is available at: www.bf2rankedservers.com (http://www.bf2rankedservers.com). The two unique initiatives will change forever the way the game is played.
Players can step into the BF2 Combat world by embarking on the Battlefield 2 Tour of Duty. Located at www.bf2combat.net (http://www.bf2combat.net), the 'meta game' features multiple large-scale 10 hour battles every week. The Tour of Duty lets members duke it out across three theaters in a dynamically updating, ever-expanding conflict. The website's central battle map updates after every three month tour, offering new paths and possibilities. BF2 Combat allows players to qualify for a variety of distinctions and even participate in a training program designed by ex-U.S. Army Rangers. BF2 Combat also boasts the Clan Fusion program, which allows clans or LAN centers to join in groups of up to 50 and play with the same unit.
To further empower the Battlefield 2 community, Planet Combat is making their administration program available to gamers worldwide. The ranked server program allows players to assist in creating unique, dynamic communities on public servers. The first of its kind initiative is designed to heighten users' experiences by encouraging cooperative play.
Developed by Digital Illusions in Sweden, the creators of the original Battlefield 1942, Battlefield 2 is rated "T" (Teen) by the ESRB and has an MSRP of $49.99. For more information about Battlefield 2, please visit http://battlefield2.ea.com or the EA press Web site at http://info.ea.com.

Do people even UNDERSTAND what this means? I may just be dim, but I'm not quite grasping how this is going to work.

It means finally there could be a dynamic FPS world. Or at least a step in the right direction.

WTF? YOU FORGOT TO MENTION THE FEES in your convulted post. Does this mean they'll make new maps?
Sounds like what they attempted in Wolf:Enemy Territory, just on a "bigger" scale. OH and the fact that you must PAY for the "joy" of playing it too.
Seems like they're garunteeing no smacktards on servers, hmm I wonder how they manage to keep to that? Do they have some sort of magically power or something?

I'd say that is a huge overstatement. From what I've read, it just looks like the same old approach to turning discreet gaming sessions into what appears to be a coherent campaign; tally results and then fabricate a map every week or two that shows "progress" based on it. Sometimes the results determine what map everyone plays on the next week. It seems exactly like how we ran Warhammer campaigns back in the day.

Yes. It's called the "Magic Power of the Banstick." It is amazing and delicious.

Seriously? You think the admins will be THAT active? Thats pretty naive.

I wouldn't say it is naive. I'd say it is a fair expectation of a for-pay server system.
It isn't like they're offering to police the entire community at large. All they have to worry about are a few, select servers. Really wouldn't be hard. Between the Banstick, and being able to password lock servers, they shouldn't have any issues.

Waiting three months to display any changes is a bad idea.

The announcement wasn't regarding the Tour of Duty (the Meta Game). We already knew about the Meta Game months ago. The announcement was regarding (1) Planet Combat assuming moderative (is that word?) control over the Ranked Server Network and (2) EA agreeing to help hype up the Tour of Duty.

Do you have to complete the next map in the progression in order for it to register that you’ve taken the last map? stupid freakn’ medal system piece of crap, grumble grumble.
All of this stuff sounds good, I’m glad that they’re doing it. If it was for a game that felt like it was done in the first place I’d be much happier.

This seems like nothing more than a take-off on the terrirtorial capture-hold meta game that was created by a comunity member and used to organize Tribes ladder matches way back in the day. But, of course, it's EA, so now you have to pay for the privledge of using it.

this means people with no real world goals will be able to achieve some made up computer world goals and feel 'good' about themselves and their lives, therefore keeping them hooked in and being a dumb/happy taxpayer while the powers that be use their tax money to achieve real world goals that they'll never get to enjoy the fruits of.

Are you simply questioning the validity of playing video games in general??? I think you're on the wrong website.

Now, I think you're being a little optomistic there. Had you said, "isn't coming out until we've at least landed on Pluto", I might find it slightly credible. ;)

i think that was a little vent for me :) i have no issues with gaming, just those that try to turn it into some 'competition' to milk kids' lunch money.
just seems that kids are getting so F'ing stupid these days, to be wasting time 'competing' about crap like this, when the rest of the real world is handing them their as*es on a silver platter in terms of a future/education/intelligence/etc.
its these 'competitions' that tend to irk me. gaming is all good, as long as people remember its just games. plus i hate it when companies raise the prices of hardware for all of us just so they can give away crap at some contest and/or to sponsor some shit*y event that 95% of the gamers don't give one rat's a*s about.
like nike(et all) sh*t, $100 shoes, cost probably $5 to make, the rest is paying for commercials/sponsorships/boats. do you think those nvidia/ati cards cost anywhere near what they're charging for them?
sigh, nm, just venting :) need more/less coffee i suppose.

It's all good. I was just wanting some clarification, I guess. :)
