Apogee sends word that it has inked a deal to bring Duke Nukem to handhelds in episodic fashion. Titles in the trilogy are Critical Mass, Chain Reaction, and Proving Grounds.

Here's the gist of the press release:

Dallas, Texas -- July 14, 2008 -- Apogee Software is back to re-establish itself as an innovative leader in interactive entertainment. Apogee is reviving some of its legacy catalogue of 30+ releases as well as publishing all-new properties in collaboration with diverse creators and developers.

Apogee is bringing the King of Action himself, Duke Nukem(tm), to the handheld console market with three new missions, together called the Duke Nukem Trilogy(tm). Apogee Software is producing the Trilogy under an exclusive license agreement with 3D Realms and MachineWorks Northwest LLC. The Trilogy is comprised of three episodes: Critical Mass(tm), Chain Reaction(tm), and Proving Grounds(tm).

"This marks a new beginning for a famous publisher with a history of market-making innovation," said Terry Nagy, co-founder and Chief Operating Officer of Apogee. "I can't think of a better character than Duke or a better franchise than the Trilogy to usher in a new era for Apogee."

"It's funny how what's old is new again in this industry," remarked Apogee co-founder, Scott Miller. "Many of the things Apogee pioneered are back in style, so it only makes sense to bring back Apogee and its properties with a visionary team that will once again create innovation for gamers around the world."
Come get some.

So... what release date are we looking at? 2057? Will we still be able to get a DS then?

There are many Apogee games I'd rather be playing. Bring back Raptor, or at least Rise of the Triad!

I'd like to see id Software do this personally if we're talking "old is new again". Original Wolfenstein, then Doom, then going up the Quake tree at least as far as Q2.

Hell, I'd love to see Lucasarts do this with their SCUMM based gamed, not to mention also releasing X-Wing/Tie Fighter for DS with Wi-Fi...man, I gotta stop dreaming, I disappoint myself too often by doing that.

"Handhelds" is all I have, I'm afraid.

Doing a little digging, that's all they've said. So, assuming they're not just talking about cell phones, it's probably a pretty safe bet that it's PSP and DS. I guess, anyway.

I wonder if they're going to be sidescrollers like the old games, or FPS's.

I think we'll probably see Duke 1 and Duke 2 with slightly updated graphics and traditional side scrolling action. I'm unsure about D3D.

I would gladly eat up a reissue of Raptor- I played the shit out of the demo that came on the Duke3d CD.

I'd just settle for re-releases of the three episodes of Duke 1. Also, they're about just half a decade shy of getting anyone excited about anything Duke Nukem related.

It will be released on both.

I'll definitely play Duke Nukem on PSP, unless they use the face buttons for look. A Metroid Prime control style would be badass.

The impression I got from the first story I read about this was that these are just ports of the old Duke 2d games.

I was just reading this, and apparently it's being reported (http://pspupdates.qj.net/Apogee-uncovers-Duke-Nukem-Trilogy-details/pg/49/aid/122262) that Apogee is shooting for a "T" rated release for DS, and an "M" rated release on the PSP.
