Slashdot is reporting (http://games.slashdot.org/article.pl?sid=05/09/27/2242233&tid=207&tid=10) that sonyxteam (http://www.sonyxteam.com/) has released a firmware downgrader to lower 2.0 systems back to 1.50.

EDIT: Some comments on slashdot claim that it is not sonyxteam that released the update. Regardless, it still works.

I don't know what people would do this for...and it works like a charm. Going back to 2.0 is a snap as well.

I don't know what people would do this for...

...the reason it was made in the first place. Unless I'm missing your point.

Well, for European PSP owners, this is their first opportunity at running independent software, aside from the very crude 2.0 Pong game released a few days back (Which is actually just a clever little .TIF file).

European PSPs come preloaded with 1.52 firmware, and since 1.51 firmware and up doesn't allow for homebrew software, they can now simply update to 2.0 and downgrade to 1.5. Real smooth.

Satire, of course...as in I don't know what people would want to downgrade for.

Why can't the filthy pirates keep their hands off of the cute, innocent, virgin PSP.

PSP released into the world. PSP deflowered. PSP's dad attempts to dress PSP up in cute white dresses and ribbons and pretend his daughter's not going out screwing around every night... :p

Each day the PSP's dad dies a little inside knowing what his skank of a handheld is doing.

I'm not really sure if that's sarcasm or not, but since nobody has stated the reason, I felt a need to inform any who are uninformed. The PSP is quite capable of running emulators and other lovely homebrew games, but in order to excute these programs, security holes have been taken advantage of...security holes that continuously get "fixed" by Sony for each firmware upgrade. It seems that most software written to run on the PSP off a memory stick requires a firmware of 1.50 or below. So....this is great news for people like myself that would upgrade everytime a new firmware update was released.

EDIT: I aparently need glasses, because I didn't notice Royal Fool's post... :)

Freaking terrified me, I was sure I'd bricked mine, but it all worked out in the end. Had to repeat one of the steps when it crashed at an earlier step than it was supposed to (yes the process involves crashing it) and it wouldn't turn off for about a minute no matter how long I held the power switch. It didn't display the lines it was supposed to at the stage either, so I seriously thought I just botched my brand new (Australian) PSP. But yay, now it's a fully functional 1.50 PSP.
If this talk is not allowed on the forums, consider my post the retelling of a dream I had this morning.

I doubt it wouldn't be allowed if there's a newspost all about it. Homebrew is perfectly legal anyway; the legal problem comes when you use it to play ISOs of games you don't own. Now, for games you DO own, dumping them on a big mem card and playing them from there provides a decent speed and battery life advantage.

Does this work for PSPs that were purchased with the 2.0 firmware factory installed, or only for PSPs that were upgraded from 1.5?

YES! I've been waiting for this.

So it definitely works on the Aussie PSPs.
Good times.

Yeah I was terrified as I couldn't find anywhere if another aussie had tested it.
It should be noted though that I used the JPNS 2.0 firmware upgrade and not the one packaged in the aussie box.
It shouldn't make a difference, but I did it because that was a firmware the downgrade had deffinitely worked with.

Eek.

Well, it's not my PSP, it's my brother-in-law's, so who gives a fuck, right?

I assume it'll work the same on the Aussie ones as the Euro ones, which seem to be okay, so we should be okay.
I'll let you know how it goes.

YES!!! Now I can run that homebrew scientific calculator on my PSP. ;-)

You just gotta laugh at the "homebrew" excuse people come up with.

OOh, now I can justify getting one of those gay white models.

Looks like I have my Christmas present picked out already this year.

Excuse? All I do with mine is play my emulators (which are ROMs of games I do already own). Might be shocking to you, but many of us are not using it to pirate games.

Worked to downgrade. Still working on installing some homebrew and an emulator to FFIII, which I purchased again just to assure moral superiority

Edit: Worked like a charm. FFIII runs beautifully on this sie screen. Funny, all I wanted were square games handhead on my DS. Now I have them, but not there.

Took me a bit but it worked a treat on my european one.
Finally! I was a bit bummed at being stuck with a 1.52, but figured it wouldn't be long before I could do something about it.

HAHAHAHA! I just purchased a brand new 1.51 PSP and downgraded to 1.5 using the new dowgraded and it works! It works!!! :D

I bought Madden 06 but I prefer to play it ripped to the memory card. It works almost twice as fast and doesnt have the hiccups and slow menu screens of the UMD version. They should just sell the games as downloads on the net and be done with the damned stores already.

Yup.
Rocking on the Aussie PSP. Plays Snes9x no probs.
