The Escapist magazine (http://www.escapistmagazine.com) Issue 12 is now online.
The Escapist magazine has released its twelfth issue, "Whatever Happened To..." featuring an exclusive interview with legendary game designer Chris Crawford.
"Gaming faces a challenge that music and movies do not: Our past art is continuously harder to access due to unending platform change and technology advancement," said Julianne Greer, Executive Editor of the magazine. "This constant flux makes it all the more important that we not forget our past. In this issue of The Escapist, we take a retrospective look at the great, and not-so-great, developers and games of preceding years."
In addition to "A Conversation with Chris Crawford," by Max Steele, other articles in this issue include contributing editor Joe Blancato with a column about "Chasing Phantoms" and new contributor, Spanner, with a two-part retrospective on the "Back O' The Arcade".

Nice. Did I miss it with earlier issues? Escapist now had ads.
Gotta make money somehow I guess.

AND this issue is only 19 pages long WITH ads taking up about 3!
Is this little experiment called "The Escapist" failing? I certainly hope not, but I fear for our little friend.

Bah, I haven't even managed the finish the last one yet. Looks like "American Morals for All" is going to have to be skipped...

I've said this before, but it bears repeating - it saddens me that GamePro is still in print while quality writing like The Escapist and Next Gen are left to carve out a niche online.

If it takes ads to keep that thing going, I'm all for it.

I'm fine with them putting ads in, if necessary, but after reading this weeks issue, I'm seriously afraid that The Escapist is on a downhill slope. I'm not trying to be a naysayer, but the latest issues just haven't compared to the first ones. Hopefully things will pick up, though.

It's not easy filling a magazine weekly, especially with Friday updates. Especially for free, and not depending on reviews and previews to fill all that space.

I don't doubt it. And if they're just having an off week, that's fine with me. I'm just afraid that it will go away completely. I have LOVED the Escapist. I don't want to see that happen.

I think its safe to say that the advertising is a good sign rather than a bad one. Advertising implies people are willing to pay to advertise in you, which means money to pay the big-word writer-layabouts.
I dare say that the long term plan was that they'd attract advertisers. And its working!
Hurrah.
(Er... all this is guesswork from working on mags. While I've written for them, I have no insider knowledge)

Good point! I wonder if this means that we can look forward to a print version. I know I've said it before, but I have my reason(s):
- my laptop burns my thighs while I'm poopsying on the potty;
- magazines are more conducive to a good jobby!

I really like this magazine. I've been a fan since the first issue and I regularly print out articles and use them as my lunch reading at work. I'll gladly put up with ads if I have to. The quality and insight of the writing is worth it.

I'd agree, though I haven't read the interview. He's also brilliant, though.

Print magazines imply price tags, though. I want my free internet goodness. If it takes advertisements to make that happen, then it's totally cool with me, but print stuff is never free. (And those are CHOCK FULL of ads!!!)

Ads plus batshit insane people being interviewed. The Escapist = The Daily Show.

I'd rather keep my thoughts AS FAR FROM your bathroom habits as I can manage. ;)
I hope I didn't come off as a heartless bugger, though. I guess I would be fine with a print edition as long as the free edition were still available.
