Buena Vista Games (BVG) has licensed the Unreal 3 engine and they are currently working on a new Turok game.

Buena Vista Games, Inc. (BVG), the interactive entertainment arm of The Walt Disney Company, and Epic Games, world-class developers of cutting-edge video games and pioneer of the award-winning Unreal Engine, today announced an agreement to license Unreal Engine 3 for multiple next-generation BVG projects. The first game under the agreement is based on the popular “Turok” franchise, and will be developed by BVG’s new Propaganda Games studio in Vancouver, British Columbia.

“We have ambitious goals for the future and a strategy to enhance Buena Vista Games’ position as a major force in interactive entertainment. BVG’s intellectual properties, combined with Epic’s leadership in underlying technology, ensures the best game content for consumers,” said Michael Ryder, vice president of worldwide production, Buena Vista Games.

“Licensing Unreal Engine 3 is a strategic move to provide cost-effective and timely delivery of new content, allowing our development teams to leverage the enormous capabilities of emerging next-generation systems,” he concluded.

Mark Rein, vice president and co-founder of Epic Games said, “BVG has some awesome IP to work with and we feel privileged to contribute to its success. It’s great to be working with the Propaganda Games team, an amazingly talented group of people, and with a management team that appreciates the importance of providing its teams with the best tools and technology to help them deliver. We have no doubt that BVG will be one of the big success stories of the next generation.”*Shiver* I just remembered how horrible the last Turok game was. I bought it full price and played it for 15 minutes.

Ah, if only Turok could be as enjoyable as the first one was (at least I remember it as being fun on the N64).

Yeah.. I have very fond memories of the original Turok... and horrible nightmarish memories of the last one :(
Either way this still has my interest.

Turok was the only FPS game that actually made me motion sick. It looked ok though.

The first N64 Turok rok'd (see what I did there?). The second was pretty decent as well. I remember fondly using the cerebral bore for the first time.

yeah im with fitbabits, if they ressurect this franchise and make it live up to the original turok from nintendo 64 I think it has the potential to be really awesome. UE3 lisencing at least shows that theyre committed to a quality engine for the game, which is more than can be said for any of the xbox turok games. I hope thats a positive sign that theyre going to invest more into the title than they did for the xbox turoks.

The last Turok was made by Acclaim who is now dead. Since it's a new developer, hopefully this game will get a bit more attention and not be just another attempt to make a quick buck off of the name alone.

Is every frigging game in the next-gen going to use the Unreal engine? Jesus. Unreal could quit the gaming biz and just create engines. They make a shitload off just the licensing.

I loved the original Turok. I couldn't get over the way the human enemies would scream if you shot them with an explosive when they were on the ground dead already.

Yes! Every single one - even Pokemon and Zelda.

I guess you mean Epic Games? <<ducks to avoid expletives>> Yep, the make an absolute killing from licensing their technology. To be fair, though, they probably spend copious amounts of cash on developing them.

Yeah, it's crazy. Who are the competitors? The Doom 3 engine doesn't seem to be in the same "generation." A new CryTech engine? LithTech? Is anybody bothering to create something to go toe-to-toe with UE3?

I loved the first and second Turok games on N64, though they certainly had their share of problems.

I got Turok for Gamecube and played about an hour in before I shut it off. I spent the next week apologizing to my Gamecube.

While the first and the second Turoks were both pretty good. Most people became disenfranchised when Rage Wars came out. Then, when the N64 was at the end of its life, Acclaim released Turok 3 which was eaily the best of the series. Unfortunately, not too many people played it,

Turok was one of the major reasons people said that FPS games did not translate on to consoles well.

It definitely has a strong brand name though. . . but I'm just not into playing a Native American dinosaur hunter. I'm down with the Native American part, but dinosaurs don't do it for me. Maybe it is because I'm so used to seeing them in videogames. . . I'm not at all interested in King Kong or any of the Dino Crisis games either (although I did play and beat ONE Dino Crisis after I became a Resident Evil nut about 5 or 6 years ago).

What is the attraction to dinosaurs?

Btw, don't feel compelled to answer that. . . I'm sure I'd find it as interesting as you would find my describing my love of ninjas to you.

I also have fond memories from the first time i used the cereberal (sp?) bore.

And i also remember Turok 3 being the best of the series.

Shit. Gotta go.

So having:

MUTATED CYBORGS TEENAGE DINOSAURS NINJAS

hmm... I think you right.

Gonna write something involving them and send it to capcom :D

well. they have to also be pirates. . . or at least battle pirates.

Maybe cute teenage female pirates in elaborate costumes that perform incredibly complicated battle animations in order to attract the Japanese market.

Why would /anyone/ care about this?

I hope they make a sequel to Rage Wars. The game was just fantastic. It was actually a better multiplayer shooter on the N64 than Goldeneye itself. The problem? Nobody played it, because they all assumed it was just another shitty Turok sequel. So many awesome weapons, decent controls, fantastic maps and a decent number of options to play around with, to create your perfect game type. That game had a total focus on arena-based deathmatch before Unreal Tournament or Quake 3 had even been conceptualized.

*sniff* I miss my cerebral bore. Too few games allow me to launch a skull-burrowing nanite of doom. =(

I think a lot of you don't realize how insane and awesome the original Turok was.

So let me help you out, okay?

First, it had dinosaurs and then SUPER DINOSAURS which could use weapons. Then you had humans who would ride triceratops who had cannons of some kind. But then you had some crazy hunter dude who had a chaingun and had HUMVEES DRIVING AROUND.

HUMVEES. IN A DINOSAUR GAME!

Then the cyborgs come in and can killed with a knife. But right after that you get a GIANT FLYING MANTIS THING.

But wait, there's more. You fight a T-Rex. Not just any trex, but one with a rocket launcher strapped to its back and LASER EYES.

LASERS FOR EYES NOW THATS JUST CRAZY!

The last boss was some kind of guy in some crazy armor I don't remember.

But to top it all off, you got 2 weapons that acted like nukes. They would blow the crap out of anything and blind you with sheer awesome.

Turok is, was, and always will be the greatest FPS ever made. Fuck you Half-Life 2.

I got the second Turok on the promise that it was better than the original, with objectives that did not consist of gathering keys (They were beacons instead!) and no fog (More fog). It wasn't a holly jolly christmas that year...

Is Valiant Comics even still in business?

Nope. Someone snapped up the IP, I think.

Man, I'm surprised at how many people liked the first two Turok games.

Honestly, I think they were some of the worst games I've ever had the opportunity to play. Ever. I initially had a good time with the first Turok, only because it was one of the launch titles for the N64 and it had over-the-top arterial squirt.
Sure, seeing your human enemies slowly fall to the ground, clutching their throat as large arcs of blood spewed forth was really cool...but the horrid controls and shoddy level design really dragged the thing down.
I wish people would realize that jumping puzzles in FPS games aren't fun. At all. Ever. The wonderful folks at Acclaim felt the need to toss 'em in every 15 minutes, though...

Turok 2 wasn't much better. It's only redeeming quality was the multiplayer monkey mode.
I gave up on the series with that one and just stuck with Goldeneye.
Now that was a good game.

Jump puzzles are hard to design, and thus are nearly never fun.

GOOD jump puzzles can be found in games like UT2K4 where you get an intereesting jump control by always having a double-jump available AND having a lot of control over your jump. This allows them to place good power-ups in areas that can only be reached by pulling off a double-jump.

Most games seem to think that a good jump puzzle should be all about timing your last step from the first ledge and jumping at the last second so your avatar can complete a tiny hop to the next platform or wrestling with momentum and lack of control in the air so that you do not "over-jump". Both of these leave me frustrated and dissappointed. . . this tired old gameplay has been around forever. It is something that has proven "not fun" so many times that it amazes me that people still do it.
