Has Tim Burton ever made a "normal" movie? I love his style, and his Batman films as well as Sleepy Hollow are incredible movies. But has he, or will he, ever make movie that isnt' so quirky and weird? Quirky and weird aren't bad mind you, but that's all he seems to make. I wonder if that will hurt him at some point.

I think Big Fish was the most "normal" of a Time Burton movie. Though it was very fanciful, it didn't have any of the characteristic "gothiness" of many of his other movies. Hm, maybe Ed Wood was the most normal since nothing fantastic really happened in it, though it was still wierd.
As far as Corpse Bride. Even though it was only an hour and a half long, it dragged in places. It was cute though. I liked Charlie and the Chocolate Factory waaaaay better. That one was an unexpectedly good movie. At least for me, I've seen a number of people bashing it.

Busy watching Firefly on DVD, so I'm interested in Serenity. I've only watched the first episode so far (also named Serenity), but what grabbed my attention was that there isn't any sound during the shots in space, as it would be in "real life." Do they keep this consistent throughout the series and will it be the case in the movie?

I bought the Firefly set a few months ago. I got through most of the first disc but it really didn't hold me interest. I keep wanting to finish the whole thing though since a friend said, "I guarantee you'll like it. If you don't, I'll buy the DVDs from you." I like sci/fi and I enjoyed some parts of what I saw (especially the Reaver stuff....it is Reavers right?)

Is the first episode the setup for the movie? I still have one more disc to go, should be coming from Blockbuster this week, though I don't know if I'll have time to watch the whole thing before friday.

I held off watching the Firefly DVDs until just recently. I just assumed that since the show was cancelled so quickly it just must have sucked. Boy was I wrong. I watched the pilot episode and then immediately went out and bought the whole set. How FOX couldn't make that show successful is beyond me. I guess they showed the whole series out of order and at random timeslots, so nobody understood it. I haven't looked forward to a movie this much for a long time.

Supposedly, the movie takes place 6 months after the last episode. Not really a setup as much as a timeline.

Assuming a show is bad because it was cancelled quick is not a good stereotype to keep. Fox has a history of putting good shows in bad slots that end up killing them. Not only did they put firefly in a bad slot, they PLAYED THEM OUT OF ORDER. It was almost like they wanted to kill it.
I will be there but will any non-geek bother?

And if you pick up the three issue mini series of the Serenity comic book that just came out from Dark Horse Comics it will fill in a bit more between the series and the movie.

After watching the pilot episode, I really can't understand why everyone is so nuts about the premise. The fact that many old sci-fi stories are retreads/updates of westerns does not mean that they should have made a sci-fi western, since all that does is make it seem like a big in-joke. The music was bad, the costuming was laughable and the fact that they were riding horses and throwing around a bag of gold coins towards the end would have made me walk out, if I was in a theater. All that being said, I'm going to see the movie and I hope to either be completely surprised or utterly vindicated.

You guys who are quitting the series after the first episode should really stick through it. I found the show really gets going by the second disc, when the characters and plot really start to get more depth. Pilot episodes are like a proof of concept, so you should give the rest a try to see how Joss actually executed the show.

Would it kill a show to release with its best foot forward? I am tired of hearing "It really gets good after such and such build up." Was I supposed to enjoy two seasons of Babylon 5 to finally enjoy a show? All shows that are great get better with time - but if you want to catch me you had better be at least watchable. Firefly's first take was not.
Oh yeah - I hate Buffy.

I wasn't impressed by Firefly when it was on TV. I caught the pilot and a couple of the regular episodes. Not one held my interest. I'm definately going to wait to see what the reviewer say. Unless they say it's great, I'm probably going to give it a miss.
Just personal taste I supposse.
It always seemed to me that Firefly was supposed to be Cowboy Bebop, but CB far exceeds Firefly in every respect. (Including acting. ;) )

I have no idea why so many people like this show. Nothing about it jumps out at you.
My brother watched the show and told me it was like the coming of the messiah. I read
all over places like here and slashdot.com how awesome it was. I watched a few episodes and have virtually zero interest in the movie. I might watch it after it comes out on video but I don't want to pay $30 (wife and concessions) to watch a 2 hour long TV show at the theater. Just my 2 cents.

I wasn't impressed by Firefly when it was on TV. I caught the pilot and a couple of the regular episodes.
The original "pilot" for the show was actually the hour long regular second episode of the show, and thus it lacked any introduction of the characters.
The actual pilot was a two hour episode meant to introduce you to all nine of the characters and get the show going.
Unless you're talking about the recent revival on Sci-Fi channel. They showed them in order, unlike the pricks at Fox.
Once I saw the show in order I understood why people said it made no sense. When the episodes are shown out of chronological order it actually doesn't make any sense. It's just a big mess because the characters don't develop from one episode to the next. That combined with the terrible timeslot pretty much murdered the series.
As for Serenity, I'm definitely going to see it. I love the show and have probably watched it 5 or 6 times through now.

Firefly was weird to me, at first. I had to watch a few episodes to really get into it. The series really flows well, and if you watch the Fox, screwed up timeline, it is really, REALLY bad. Fox put it on the death slot. Friday night. Most shows that start there, die there, that season. Sometimes they hold on 1 extra season... but not often. They also moved it around, pre-empted it, etc. It was VERY difficult to track down, when it would be on. There were 11 episodes aired. I bet it took them 20 weeks to air them. Not to mention playing the pilot at the end...
If you don't like Buffy or Angel, you probably don't like Joss's style, and probably won't like Firefly. If you like those shows, chances are, you will like Firefly. This show was canceled, and never given a real chance to live. Luckily we got the DVD release, and from the DVD sales, the Movie was given a green light. Generally, series that are canceled before they complete one season, never come back. We have a movie on the way. :-)
We have done the impossible, that makes us mighty.

I want to rent and watch these episodes in the right chronological order but have no idea if the first episode on disc 1 is the Fox first episode or the pilot episode.I live in New Zealand aka Middle Earth and I have never heard of Firefly or Serenity until this thread. I would very much like to see them and enjoy them.I can rent them off an online DVD rental but want to know I'm renting the first episode first.Disc 1 has Serenity part 1&2 which sounds like the pilot and The Train Job and Bushwhacked. If anyone can tell me that these are episodes 1,2 and 3 I would very much appreciate it.Thanks

Yes, Serenity parts 1 & 2 ARE the original intended pilot, then Train Job, then Bushwhacked.
Fox thought Serenity parts 1 & 2 had "not enough action and too much drama" and that Mal's character was "too dark" so they asked Whedon to write another pilot episode (over the space of a weekend!), which ended up being the Train Job.
Though Fox eventually did get around to airing the all-important pilot episode. LAST.

If you watch the DVDs from the boxed set, you'll be watching it in the order it was meant to be seen in, not the order FOX originally aired them. The two part episode 'Serenity' is the pilot, so you're golden. Personally, I really liked the pilot episode and it pulled me into the series right there. I agree that most pilots for shows out there aren't very good, but this one was different. For those of you thinking about watching the rest of the episodes, if you absolutely can't stand the first episode, then you'll probably not like the rest.

I managed to get tickets to a preview screening of 'Serenity' last Tuesday. In a word, it was AMAZING. It actually surpassed my (already high) expectations.
Anyone who has an interest in well-written drama and great action scenes, never mind sci-fi HAS to go and see this film.
Can't wait to see it again on Oct 7th (the day it scomes out in the UK).

They do keep that consistent during the series. From what I've read, during the big space battle in the movie there will be sound but they've explained that they're actually in the atmosphere of some celestial body, ergo there's enough of a medium for sound to travel (plus it gave them an excuse to have cool sound effects during the battle).
I can't wait though. I was one of the few who actually watched the entire run on TV, Fox's efforts to bollocks it up be damned. I hope that a sucessful movie leads to either more movies or the series being picked up elsewhere.

Part of Universal's agreement to back the movie is that if 'Serenity' is a success (which it looks like it will be), they will agree to make at least 2 more movies.
Besides, Fox still owns the rights to the tv show for 10 years. Which sucks.

Firefly took a bit of getting used to, but if you give it time to grow on you, it will really grow on you.
My advice: watch at least all the episodes up to Jaynestown (Episode #7). By then, the show had really hit its stride, and if you didn't like it by then... well, you're just wrong, but okay, you can stop watching then.

I wouldn't say that it sucked. I was a little disappointed but I think it may have been because I kept expecting it to be The Nightmare Before Christmas' spiritual sequel (pun intended). It was nowhere NEAR as fantastic as Nightmare and the land of the dead, which could have been the source for a really neat journey out of hell for poor Victor (both literally and figuratively) was barely used.
I want to see it again and see how it stands on its own merits rather than my comparing it to Nightmare. As it stands, it was ok but not the tour de force that Nightmare was. Actually, now that I think of it, Corpse Bride really seems like it should have been the movie that came out first, THEN Nightmare as it just seemed smaller on all levels...
