An unidentified paramilitary force infiltrates a multi-billion dollar aerospace compound, the government responds by sending in Special Forces, but loses contact as an eerie signal interrupts radio communications. When the interference subsides moments later, the team has been literally torn apart. Your mission is simple: Eliminate the intruders at any cost. Determine the origin of the signal. And contain this crisis before it spirals out of control.
F.E.A.R. is an action shooter, and the weapons of F.E.A.R. reflect this development aim: they are fast, loud and slightly futuristic. The weapons are either are inspired by the developers research into the Department of Defense prototype weapons or are direct descendents of weapons from previous Monolith games (Battle Cannon – Shogo's Shredder; Remote Mines – Blood and Shogo, etc.). Check out details on the F.E.A.R. weapons (http://www.worthplaying.com/article.php?sid=28568), including a new trailer (http://www.worthplaying.com/article.php?sid=28568) showing off each one of them with ingame footage, over at WorthPlaying.
I just played the fear demo and thought the weapons were the weakest part. They just didn't have that powerful sound the weapons in say counterstrike had. For instance, when I picked up the assault rifle, I was expecting to be blown back in my seat, but it sounded more like a pea shooter. Also, and this may have just been on my machine, I felt like they were a little bit unresponsive.

I'm going to have to get this game, even with my gripes about certain aspects of it. I just hope we get to off that ghost girl at some point, she gives me the creeps. Need to put her back down the well with her sister from that japanese movie.

I got mixed feelings on the weapons, but the demo was awesome. And actually creepy. I'm looking forward to the game.

Definitely one of the few games I'll be purchasing/making time for during this super-busy semester.

I'm gonna love this game. Unfortunately, though, I feel like this one may only get a few plays through. I just don't know about replay value on it. The multiplayer's decent, but nothing new.

Seriously, I can't understand where people find the time to complain about only getting "a few" playthroughs on stuff or about replay value in general. I guess this was sort of different before I was in college and before I had a little more cash, but I can't find the time to play through most the games I want to once! Heh, not bagging on you, Random, just noticing something. :P
At first, the game seems kinda "meh", but after playing it again - all the way through, it seems pretty cool. Here's to hoping it turns out more like the second half of the demo, instead of the first half of the demo.
Weapons in the game are kinda ... "meh"...

All FPS's are mod'able, so your bound to have more play time!

Precisely how I feel, I have barely time enough to play through the games I have even once, I really don't care if I can't play them 30 times.
IF it gets me entertained and keeps me playing until it's over, I'm pretty satisfied.

Fair enough on the lack of time issue. No offense taken, Kef. I was talking more about the timelessness of the game itself. I can play Half-Life, NOLF, or System Shock 2 again any time the moment strikes me, and they're still brilliant. What I meant before is that I don't think F.E.A.R. is going to be at that level. That's what I mean by replay value.
I don't need alternate ways through, I don't need different ways to explore a damn good story (though they always help :D). What I do like are games that retain their magic after the first run. I'm not sure F.E.A.R. will.
Maybe it's just quality I'm talking about then, who the fuck knows.

Ahhh, very good point, then. I mean I still make time once a year to replay Half-Life and its sequel, so I dig what you're saying there. Still, I don't expect that out of many games. I totally understand now, though.

This demo just didn't impress me at all. The lifting of Samarra (sp?) from The Ring didn't help either.

Yeah, now I get it too. Well, very few games have that quality. And System Shock 2 is certainly on the top 2 list :)
We can't really blame F.E.A.R. for not being as replayable as those classics you cited. I hope it will be a great FPS in the fun factor. But I guess we haven't seen the meat of it. I really hope the game is not limited to the generic office/warehose/factory environments we got on the D.E.M.O. (sorry, bad joke). I mean, no matter how pretty they render boxes and shelves, they are still ugly and boring.
