Filecloud sends along word that they have posted the newest trailer (http://www.filecloud.com/files/file.php?file_id=2130) for Activision's upcoming title, The Movies, this one the first part of the in-game created movie, Weight of the World.

Jesus... that's not very cool. A guy murdering his adulterous wife as a trailer for the game? Uh... isn't there anything more fun you could show?

This and previous example movies lead me to believe there are certain actions you can only achieve through sound effects and cut aways which is a bit of a cop out. Plus the lack of jaw movement, in this day and age, is a bit dissapointing to say the least.

Just awful, the graphics look several years old. No facial animation! No facial animation! That would have been one of the top things on my list of stuff to put in the game. And Peter, buddy, I hate to break it to you, but you aren't going to make any serious movies with this tool/game, stop pretending you're an artist. You're just embarassing yourself.

I'm gonna agree; it just doesn't look that good. Who the fuck wants that guy as the leading-man in a MOVIE, for God's sake? I mean, you want someone like Bruce Campbell or Drew Barrymore to look at, not leftover extras from Grand Theft Auto as your main characters.

Decent idea, terrible result.

You know what everyone wants - a Star Trek version of this where you make your own episodes. I should make a fuckin' design doc for it and sell it off.

I'm pretty sure he actually shot her lover, since she screamed AFTER the shot was fired. That or he shot her in the leg or something...

What's up with the convertible with wood paneling? Ick.

I've seen homemade movies made with the SIMS2 that looked better. The game itself better be fun to play, because the movie side of it just looks sorry.

Jesus. I have/had hopes for this game, but that trailer made the thing look very dated and tacky. I love the thought of bringing one of my stories to life with a movie, but you are basically using weird dolls here...they look like humans but no lip movement at all. Just nods and gestures. I think that will suffice, but it wont win over everyone, that's for sure. It looks like pre-rendered facial expressions are available, like smiles and grimaces, but I dont know if they can change on the fly, without a cut-away.

Plus, this movie was horribly planned out. I wouldn't want to pay to see this flick.

Not exactly what I was expecting. I may still get it though just to see if it will actually be so limiting.

My suggestion for PM would have been exactly in that vein: Try getting hooked up (on a one-time contract deal, of course) with EA again, making this game an expansion for The Sims 2. Solid engine already in place, the joy of Simglish and a guaranteed million-seller. EA made this kind of deal with Sid Meier to do SimGolf, so it wouldn't have been unprecedented...

On the official forums, it was noted by several folks this movie says 2004 at the end, it's an old movie. The full version will have lip sync (it's on of the main features). I don't get why they released this movie, since it's a very unfished build of the game.

If you look at some of the other movies (that are more recent), you will notice that they have lip-sync in the game. Why this movie is coming out now, I don't know. The graphics aren't even as good as the other movies on Fileplanet or 3DGamers.

Seems like a bad marketting move to me.

You know what would make a great movie?

The Movies.

(Haha, oh I'm so terribly witty today.)

SimGolf is a great game. I need to play that one sometime.

Yeah, that's really weird. I've seen a far better demo movie, some goofy thing where a lizard man attacks a lady and she stabs him. No speech in it, but the animations were good. I truly hope that this is an old movie, as opposed to the standard Molyneux downward curve of the product, where all the great features they hyped up and couldn't work out are being ditched.

I also hope The Movies has a strong demarcation between its "game" and its real movie-making mode. Anyone who wants to try to do anything remotely polished with this won't want to have to put up with arbitrary limits on actors, sets, props, costumes, etc.

Lip synch and expressions are the killer here. I'd also read that the game would support them, which further indicates how old this video might be, but I'd feel better if we got a more modern example movie to demonstrate these features.

I agree with Mason. We need a modern example asap.

I have high hopes for this game still... but they faded a little.
