Get a load of this. (http://www.1up.com/do/newsStory?cId=3144002)
Microsoft isn't the only company hoping to cash in on the Thanksgiving frenzy this holiday season; Square Enix will release the highly anticipated (and rightfully so!) RPG juggernaut Dragon Quest VIII: Journey of the Cursed King on November 22.
I don't think it will have too much impact on the 360, considering it is all ready sold out! :) Right now I don't have any interest in either game, but I bet a bunch of folks do. Thanks Shacknews for the tip.

Just like last year, so many big things released on my birthday (Nov. 22). The DS and WoW (on or around the 22nd).

Anyone know if Dragon Quest VIII is any good? As in, a Japanese RPG actually worth playing? Unlike 98% of the others this console generation?
The game also has a FFXII demo.

It's "all ready" sold out? Damn.

FFXII must be getting pushed back for the PS3 or something. It makes no sense for them to wait so long to release a PS2 game.

Wel DQ7 couldn't hold my attention for 10 minutes. I'm not expecting much of this.

Yeah, that's what I was thinking. Where is it already sold out? You can still order bundles on all the websites and places like Best Buy and Walmart don't
take preorders. Am I missing something?
Edit: Oh, ok, it seems EBgames.com is sold out. I'm pretty confident I'll be able to find one on the 22nd though, at Walmart or Target.

I guess I should have put the winky smiley ;) insead of the smiley. Although reports are popping up the EB has stopped taking pre-orders and many Gamestops have sold out of their first shipments. But who knows, it is all just hype any way.

Huh? There are a lot of JRPGs worth playing this generation. You must have overlooked them all for some odd reason.
And yes, the 22nd I will be the new owner of Dragon Quest VIII, instead of a 360.
I think that it would have been smart to release FF12 on the PS3, push it back like MS did to all of its anticipated titles. It's greasy business, but it would be well worth it for Sony. Of course, Square isnt Sony, so that makes a big difference. The PS2 install base is crazy big, so banking on a new system wouldnt sell as many titles, but it sure as hell would sell some systems. I'd be one of those buyers.

So, many, freak'n games. I spent $200 on PS2 games this week alone. I can't imagine what the future weeks hold. I already have another $200 allocated for Oct-Nov for PC games. And if the XBox360 looks THAT good, well, I may end up broke by the end of the year.

I never understood that "sold out" thing. How can you be sold out of units that are no even out in production yet? Sure there are factory limitations, but you'd think they'd just push harder to sell as many copies as possible. If EB says "sold out", but Walmart lets you order, then it's not "sold out".
Wal mart probably gets a higher allocation of units than EB, though, and based on pre-orders they can ship that many Xbox360s + 5 more to each Wal-mart and then figure out where to put the rest (if there is any).

Considering S-E expects people to put massive hours into their games, I can see why they want their games months apart. Meanwhile, EA and Activision are pushing out a game a week. I think I prefer the S-E and Nintendo way.

Well it could be kinda like the release of FFIX for PS1 which came out after the PS2 was released. I think there is no precedent to say that Square will move that to PS3, in fact I think it is unlikely.
On the note of DQ8, the whole cell-shaded thing seems to be over, I am surprised that they are still releasing games with that. The only reason I can think of is that the PS2 is getting dated and the cell-shaded games are about the only thing that doesn't look like crap on it anymore. Anyway given that it is a Dragon Quest game it still should be a lot of fun.
This thread failed to mention that a playable demo of Final Fantasy 12 will be included with every copy of DQ8.
Edit: Me feels stupid now... lunchems and munchems for poor tired Gurgi...

Look over the thread again. It didnt fail to be mentioned. Still, that's pretty damn sweet. We'll all get to see what the new direction for FF has in store...

I'm far more interested in DQ8 then the XB360. I'm a big RPG fan, and the only RPG for the 360 that I know of that will release close to launch is Oblivion, and I'd far perfer the PC version of that.

Whoops, my bad. It figures that I would carefully read 15 page threads looking for ommitted facts, but when it comes to a slim 2 page thread like this, I miss something said in the first few posts!
<hangs head in shame>
Still though, I hope DQ8 sells boatloads and prompts more DQ American success the way FF7 did for that brand.
I credit Dragon Warrior 4 for keeping me into video games at a sensitive age when I could have easilly gone on to focus on school work or outside sports. I shudder at the thought! ;)

Square has spent millions of dollars on FFXII though. They can release it for the PS2, with 100 million users, or the PS3, which won't have anything close to that for years. Bigger audience usually means bigger sales.

...such as? I'm not sure what you mean by games that are "worth playing." There have been a lot of medicore, plain average or solid JRPGs, but none that really rock the house like they used to. Will all kinds of other more polished games out, there really isn't any reason to play flawed gems unless you've got a lot of time on your hands. And flawed gems is all that has come out of Japan in terms of RPGs this generation, even at its best.
If these games you're talking about are anything like Star Ocean, Suikoden 3/4, Dark Cloud 2 (god forbit), or Final Fantasy X, then I'll have to pass.

Tales of Symphonia is one of the few ones I enjoyed, but I would agree with the opinion that it is a flawed gem.
I thought Final Fantasy X was poor in all aspects except for combat system which was pretty good. Storyline was poor, voice acting was laughable- pretty much the entire vibe of the world and most of the characters was a turn off for me.
Whenever Seymore opened his mouth I wanted to mute. That voice worked well with the Mooninite leader on Aqua Teen Hunger Force, but it's terrible as a FF boss.
Same goes for Tidus' cheese fest over-acting and the "I want to slap you" urge I felt in my loins whenever any female character opened their mouth.
The new Suikodens were weak, especially 4. Same with Star Ocean. But Dark Cloud 2 was a fun romp... hardly an epic, but still fun.

Then what do you want? If your standards are so astronomically high, I'm guessing that Chrono Trigger and FF6 are the only RPGs you have ever enjoyed. How about Wild Arms 3, Nocturne, Digital Devil Saga, Radiata Stories, Shadow Hearts 1 and 2 (I know you havent played those two if you are saying there are no good RPGs out) Breath of Fire: Dragon Quarter (which is frigging weird), Arc the Lad: Twilight of the Spirits, .hack (worth trying out), the Nippon Ichi SRPGS like Phantom Brave...I'm getting bored so just go check out Gamespot or Gamerankings and check the RPG genre games/ratings.
Oh, and Dark Cloud 2 is a great game, I dont know what you've been smoking or sniffing.

Shadow Hearts was solid, I forgot that game.
FFX though, was weak. I enjoyed FF9 more just because it had no voice acting. A lack of subtitles in FFX made it impossible to mute Seymore's respirator-like breathing and Tidus' girly screams. -10 points right there. Then there's the fact that there was not even a "sense" of freedom or that your actions made any difference. And did I mention the lethargically paced storyline that failed to interest me at best, and made me turn it off mid-cutscene to watch "the sopranos" at worst?
/end whining.
Go play shadow hearts though. Napoleon: "Sweet"

See, people want voiceovers in their RPGs, but complain about them when there are voices actually there. I enjoyed FFX. It was a work of art, at least visually. The game was a little easy though. Still, i dont know why people hate X so much. I think that's the minority, for sure.
