2K Games has released the demo for their old school shooter Serious Sam II
As promised, 2K Games now sends along the playable demo for Serious Sam II, allowing the chance to pull out all the stops in this frantic first-person shooter sequel that is nearing completion at Croteam. Word is: "This demo contains the complete Seriousopolis Uptown level from the game, which can be played solo, or over LAN or online by up to four people. It also contains all the weapons from the game (although you may have to cheat to see all of them), one of the game's vehicles and a nice variety of the insane enemies that Sam is well known for."

its funny because my system which costs just about as much as your video card runs it just fine
also, way to go gamespy; you've ruined yet another game
why did gamespy ruin it?
Horrible server browser and getting into a game is pretty difficult.

Yeah, I have a really hard time believing this is the norm. Somekind of patchable software issue likely, or it's isolated only to you.
Can’t seem to get on the net to play her.... But the single player is a ton of fun. Great music, graphics, game play etc.... I’m running her on max settings with hdr off. The hdr seems to really blur everything and lagg. Also one of the texture settings has an option for 32bit, compressed, and optimal. Leave it at optimal p: ^_^ Runs great that way and looks great!!

well its the HDR. Turn that off and now I can have full everything. Looks great on My dell 2405FPW ;)
I was worried I'd have to turn the res right down on it and make it look like crap. It seems that the HDR isn't proper HDR from the way it looked, It didn't look any different on or off, it just made it run a damn load slower. Probably some software/driver issue.

I just finished the single player level...
Wow, pretty damn dissapointing if you ask me, and I'm a huge fan of the original Sam games.
It's pretty obvious that the game was built for console (360) then ported to PC...
When you enter your name in the profile you can't even TYPE it. You have to use the mouse and click the letters you want *blank stare*
The game ran "not bad" for me at 1280 with HDR off... had some slowdown if I turned on V-Sync... (6800 GT, A64 3000+ overclocked, 1.5bg DDR400)
With HRD on I put the game at 1024 and it still ran like shit durring action.
HDR honestly didn't make the game LOOK any better... especially compared to how shitty it ran.
Can't wait to see Valves attempt at this new (useless) technology.
Bah, this demo put a bitter taste in my mouth. Seriously.
LOL.
Wow PC Gaming is great ;)
If I was forced to use a key of some sort, say a sharp metal instrument that must be jabbed in ones eye, prior to playing a game on a PC, I'd take it over any alternative.

Just found it runs with HDR if bloom is off.
HDR is more advanced than bloom so I think I can live with that.

This is what I heard from some very early grumblings. Sad to see it may be true, but it kept me from getting my hopes up.
Who could blame them, it worked so well for DX2

I learned quite a bit about HDR from your little episode with it. Thanks for sharing the info. So, when you finally got it working right, is it all it's cracked up to be?

Beautiful. I couldn't agree more.
I'd imagine the effect of HDR is heavily influenced by the implementation. Anyone smarter than I want to confirm/yell at me?

You don't really notice the HDR in Sam. Its way over the top in its "hacked in" form in Far Cry, and theres little (but you do notice it) in Chaos Theory. Right now I'm hoping Lost Coast does a good job with it (the U3 engine looks like it does) as it can be a good effect, but it does depends on how the developer puts it into their game.
I don't think the game is that great though. Pretty dull, it doesn't really play like the original enough to be liked in the same way (the areas are too small for the number of enemies required, fighting on the closed off ramp was a bit of a silly part too) and not differently enough to be great as its own game. If you understand what I'm on about. I'd have to try the full game a a friends or something before I commit cash.

It stands for High Dynamic Range. It's the latest new buzz word in eye candy for video games. It has something to do with lighting and I understand supposed to give you more realistic looking images, but I'm starting to get out of my realm of expertise.

It's all good! :)
"HDR stands for High Dynamic Range, and is also sometimes referred to as High Dynamic Range Imagery (HDRI) or High Dynamic Range Rendering (HDRR)."
Here's a good article about it, which is also where I got the definition:

Yeah, I figured as much too. I just figured that since he got it working well and said it was a more advanced effect than bloom, that he might have some input.

Great link, I liked this part.
For the average enthusiast, there are only three things to remember about HDR:
Bright things can be really bright
Dark things can be really dark
And the details can be seen in both

I personally noticed VERY little difference when it was on.
It gave more of a bloom effect when looking at the sky and bright buildings... that's about it. Didn't look much different than when it was off though, other than halving my framerate.

The demo runs fine, but goddamnit, the end of the demo on the normal setting is way way to hard. You cant just kill everything, its spawning faster than you can do that, all you can do is run past everything to the minigun but then you are at the feet of 3 giant monster spawning super-monsters. And you die.
Come the fuck on, give us a fucking chance here. Gah.
I need to try it again on easy, but that part pissed me off so much that I think I'll just skip it.

Thats weird, I had the oposite experience.
I got in the vehicle... flew around for a second shooting a few enemies... saw a balcony with a big flashing blue bullseye type marking on it... si L landed there and ran inside the doors on rthe balcony (all the while surounded by enemies) and the game instantly went to a cutscene and I won...
I was like "ummm... lame".
I know I already stated my opinion, but after playing part of the demo again, I just have to re-state... I am REALLY dissapointed in Croteam. A freaking crappy console port *shakes head*.
I've always denied it, but it seems there may be some truth about PC gaming dying out. More and more games are just rushed, crappy, console ports these days. It's kind of depressing... since PC gaming is my main hobby.
Looks like I might have to start doing something productive with my time soon *shudders*

Are you serious? Croteam now too? Those people OWE PCGamers for their success. How many copies did Serious Sam sell on the Xbox? 2? 3 maybe tops?
So we've lost Ubi, Valve and id are leaving, Croteam, Lionhead (sorta), Bioware...Bethesda will probably go console only before too long...who's next?
Man I love PC Gaming, but with all the developers jumping ship it is getting bleaker and bleaker. A lot of their games even sell better on the PC, yet they still go.

Bioware are only working on Dragon Age for the PC (which currently looks very meh but theres been no info since like E3 2004) and they have already said they are working on 2 more console games so thats a shift.
Also Beth have said Fallout 3 will be multiformat, much like oblivion is.
I'm a little worried about PC gaming but it won't disappear overnight. It has years left.
EDIT: It will probably be stupidly high hardware costs that will eventually kill the PC as a games machine, especially if the X2's 7800's and X-Fi parts are the start of a trend (and Physics cards next year, Vista possibly causing trouble and backwards compatibility becoming more difficult over time).
(Sorry if my post makes it all sound way too bleak, I didn't set out too make it so!!)

Oh man. I didn't think we'd be hearing "DOOOOOOOOOOOOOM!" on EvAv. Lame.
Did Bioware ever work on more than one PC game at any given time? If they did it wasn't the norm.
I'm not worried. The fear of PC Gaming dying has been a bit redundant for 5+ years now and there's never been anything to support that idea.
Also Beth have said Fallout 3 will be multiformat, much like oblivion is.
As was Morrowind. Which at it's core is a PC game experience.

I'm not going to dig for numbers. I can say with full confidence that Serious Sam sold a HELL of a lot more copies on the PC than it did on the Xbox.
I'm also willing to bet anything that Half-Life 2 sells less on the Xbox than it did on PC. Doom 3 is probably the same. Ghost Recon probably sold more on the Xbox, but did they have to just abandon all the PC gamers who embraced the first title? Same goes for Rainbow Six. A lot of the major publishers who were made on the PC are leaving it completely, or starting to pull out more and more, and it's sad.
C'mon it's not that bleak! I demand LIGHT!

Bioware barely makes PC stuff anymore. They have put out three Xbox titles since Neverwinter came out, and will probably put out another console game or two before we ever see Dragon Age. The fact is that they are much more focused on Xbox (and now Playstation) development than they are to their original fanbase. I see Bethesda making the same shift before too long.

Here is the word on MULTIPLAYER
[20:12] <NoMercy_Rider> get someone to host and then they give you their IP address
[20:12] <NoMercy_Rider> apparently the only way to join is to specify an IP address
[20:12] <NoMercy_Rider> there's a bug in the demo so you can't join through the game lobby
If anyone needs help with anything, IRC channel #seriously on GAMESNET can probably help you

Wow, that did not feel like a Serious Sam game. More like playing generic action shooter guy in wacky future world. I don't ever recall being able to just skip to the next area without killing all the enemies in SS1/SS:SE, but you can do that here twice.
1) When you get the minigun, after you kill all three of the big monsters, everything auto dies.
2) Right after that, when you hop on the vehicle, you can destroy the two turrents far away, and then when the gate opens, you can jump out of your craft and run through the door. Boom, end of demo.
Lame.
I also remember being able to avoide enemy fire better in SS1, as in, the enemy weapon fire was dodgable, or enemies had to physically hit you. In SS2, you just end up losing health because you're getting shot by every enemy. I hardly got to circle strafe at all, I just stood there and shot things before they shot me.
*cross that one of my list*

before you guys judge the entire game on a poorly selected level (it was 2K game's choice at which level to demo, I hear.. not to mention the demo only plays HALF of that level.. there's more after cut-scene)...
go to EXTRAS and play the CREDITS movie. it shows a lot of what the game is really like in the background. You see there are open levels, lots of enemies, everything.

Bad demo if you ask me. I really liked the Original. It was all you want from arcade shooter. It had crazy monsters , funny remarks, nice graphics, great level design (Many open areas), and cool multyplayer.
and WTF with this game? why did they transformed Sam to something else?
He looks ugly. Whats with the Halo clone girl? and why the hell they need realstic phisics engine? and how come when I throw the grande there is no sound whatsever?
oh, and wheres multuplayer? I cant connect to anything. Damn this one is a huge dissapoinment.
