At a business meeting today in Japan SCE President Kaz Hirai announced quite a few things that will be coming to the PSN in the near future, including the much asked about video download service. From IGN (http://http://ps3.ign.com/articles/884/884551p1.html?RSSwhen2008-06-26_040200&RSSid=884551):

The company's long awaited video on demand service will target PlayStation 3 and PSP, adding movies and television programs to the PlayStation Network on top of the current game content. Videos will be sold through a video store on the network and will be viewable even while the download process is running.

America will get the first shot at the video service this summer. The program will then continue on to Japan and Europe. Further details will be announced at E3 next month.

PlayStation products are just the start for Sony's video plans. By 2010, Sony plans on expanding its video offerings to televisions, PCs, and mobile sets.

In addition to the new video service, Sony also unveiled a brand new initiative: Life with PlayStation. This new program will offer real time news updates and weather to PlayStation 3 users via an interactive globe interface. The interface displays recreations of the weather and shows headlines as you move to different locals. The headlines can be clicked on to open up more details in a window.

Sony also addressed PlayStation Portable at today's press conference. Sony will be expanding the portable's network functionality, and will at long last offer direct connection to the PlayStation Store some time this fiscal year.
And there you have it.

They need to add these services but I feel like it's just a "me too" move. Nintendo has the weather and news channels and MS has the movies and tv shows on demand. Adding these services just puts them on par. I'd like to see something more than what we've already had for years.

That's not to say I'm bitching about them adding new stuff (I think it's great) but it's hard to get excited when the competitors have had it for a while.

I agree. It's nice. But for the 1000th time. I'd rather have some games! Or my PSN stuff in Europe when it's not obsolete anymore. Or more PS1 titles in store. Or BC back.

I don't need the freaking weather. I'm inside playing a game if I have it switched on.

Exactly. It is as if the PS3, what was supposed to be the most awesome system ever, is only getting ketchup (catch-up). The competition is already doing this, and has been for a long time.

I'd rather have games.

Sounds good. Especially a PSP version of the PSN.

I would rather have 2.4 firmware please. This will bring it on a more level footing to my 360.

Oh and more games.

So if the competition is doing something, Sony should not? Isn't it better to add this service now instead of never?

Didn't say that. What is there to be excited about though? It does not break new ground and simply isn't exciting. Who was the 3rd man on the moon? Who was the 3rd person to fly across the Atlantic?

It isn't news, it is expected (especially since Sony has been touting the service as 'coming' since before the launch of the PS2 (http://www.highbeam.com/doc/1P1-26537699.html)).

Sony isn't a leader this generation, they are a follower. They are playing catch-up to the competition. People are STILL waiting for cross-game messaging in the XMB, a feature available DAY ONE on the Xbox 360. Sony waits for the competition to make the decisions, and then try to follow-up with their own versions of 'spin the globe'.

MOAR GAMEZ!!!

But seriously, the novelty of the weather channel on the Wii wore off after the first few days of playing Spin The Globe. I only watch the little Major's Minute things on my 360. How about adding more games for me to waste my money on instead of things either of my other consoles do!

Sigh.

Eh, I'm just glad to hear that the store access from the PSP will be coming soon. That'll be very nice. I personally couldn't care less about movie downloads.

It's an absolute shame that they haven't implemented that yet. I'm not saying I'd be downloading games left and right, but keeping the steps down to a minimum is always a good idea (I'm looking at you, Metal Gear Online).

Geez, does it have to be EXCITING? Can't it just be a good addition to the PSN and that's it? To me this is good news, since nothing like this is available here.

It isn't news, it is expected (especially since Sony has been touting the service as 'coming' since before the launch of the PS2 (http://www.highbeam.com/doc/1P1-26537699.html)).
So when something expected happens, it should not be reported as news?

What I want to know is, if I download a movie on my PS3 can I transfer it to my PSP?

I wonder what the catalog of movies will be. Their own, or maybe a partnership with Netflix?

I hope not, since that would mean low-res video on the PS3. Unless the video is re-encoded during the transfer...

I love when Sony makes claims that involve dates...so by summer they really mean winter, and by 2010, they really mean 2012.

They have no credibility, I'll believe it when i see it.

HAHA...that's a great question. I was under the impression that they sony would be only selling their movies, because why would they open up an avenue for their competitors to sell movies through their service.

Netflix is much more likely to be on the 360...i mean the netflix ceo sits on microsoft's board of directors.

I'd assume it'd be something along the lines of buying the PS3 version would give you access to the PSP version. That'd make sense.

I just saw pics of the psn video download service on Kotaku (just basically the front page of it at a certain point in time) and it had 2 movies shown on the front page, Benchwarmers and Resident Evil...both Sony Pictures movies. That doesn't help us determine if the PSN will have Movies from other studios...but logically i don't think they will.

If the choices for downloading movies involves buying the movie (vs renting) then I'm willing to bet it's only Sony pictures.

This just in on the wire "Sony still playing catch up with it's online service, promises it will soon be where MS was, 2 years ago.".

Which should happen at light speed with the 8 core cell processor they have in there. The PS3 is perfectly suited for this.

Hell. Ice skates. As likely.

Nice to see that White Knight Story has a release date :) Killzone in February, White Knight in March. Hopefully it will come out here in March, as opposed to March in Japan, October in the US or something :(

Any word on availability in Canuckistan? We had to wait quite a while for the 360 to offer movies up here. Considering the article only mentioned America, will we have to wait for it on the PSN as well?

Using a PS3 to rip the DVDs you already own to the PSP would also kick-ass... and would be a huge selling point to owning the pair. It wouldn't be difficult to implement, and like may commercial PC-based ripping programs, the final file could be encoded with your serial number to discourage you from sharing it.

You already own the DVD. You can already use PC software to rip it to your PSP. Why not just go the final step and let the PS3 'Supercomputer' do the work for you?

Sony dominated for two generations in a row. They shouldn't be playing catch up. They should be the leader, not the follower.

Isn't that something they have already mentioned? Allowing consumers to copy a Blu-Ray movie to their PSP...having the PS3 do the conversion for them (http://gizmodo.com/342980/blu+ray+to+psp-movie-transfers-how-its-gonna-work)?

AFAIK:

This works only with certain Bluray movies that have the 'feature' available upon manufacture. Already purchased Blade Runner? Wanna watch it on the go? Tough noogies.
This does not convert the film, but instead uses a special second copy of the film on the disc specially formatted for the PSP
Does absolutely nothing for the DVDs you already own

Gorvi

I'd guess most movie studios would have an issue with the PS3 actually copying the movies. Just a thought.

You need to remember that what's best for the consumer isn't always something that's realistic to implement.
