Gamespot (http://www.gamespot.com/news/2005/09/20/news_6133941.html) reports that everyone's favorite 17 year old dating, long-haired bad boy John Romero (oh, he designs games too), is back in business with his own dev studio.

"For the record," Romero wrote in the post, "I'm co-founder of a new game company in the bay area and am much better off in many ways than I was at Midway."

What a sad little foot note in gaming History Romero is. Could be worse I hear killcreek is working at a placement service in Monterey.

As for details on what Romero is up to in his new Northern California digs, the designer was vague, saying only: "When news of my new game somehow gets out, I think everyone will be a bit shocked."

IMHO the last thing this world needs is John Romero running another business. His track record in that regard is already 0-2; Ion Storm and MonkeyStone.

I hope anyone wanting to get into the gaming industry, or people in the industry looking to change jobs, realize that Romero hasn't proven himself as a successful businessman.

Romero.."mymb" lol That is why if you are a gaming god geek don't get a ponytail. once the ponytail shows up, You minus well just break out that old guitar and go play at the under 18 club, and talk about how cool you are to 15yolds.

There were two Ion Storm offices back in the day. Warren ran one of them (aka "the good one"). The other office, the one with the over the top cubicle designs, top floor of a high-rise, etc... was run by Romero. Romero was also one of the founders and principles of the company.

Could be worse I hear killcreek is working at a placement service in Monterey.

Why does everyone forget John Romero was part of id software? Jeeze, the guy is a mover in the industry. Now, don't get me wrong, I think he has made some VERY bad moves, and has an immature streak... though, I have seen other designers that are a bit... odd. :-) I remember back in the day, when he was still with id, how he would visualize some of the areas in the game. I forget the interview, but his imagination was revolutionary. Now, if he can harness that creativity, and turn it into a game, we will really have something.

It's pretty cool that he's been able to parlay success with one game, that's a decade old at this point, to continued success in the videogame industry. No matter how many digital abortions he heaps upon the market, someone's always willing to give the man a job or start up capital for a new studio. Just goes to show: you've only got to hit it big once.

Romero looks like this guy who goes to my university. He looks like he's 40 years old, he's got a gumdrop head with really long hair and whenever I see him on the public computers he's always looking at some typical metal website with 3D rotating text, a black background and animated GIFs of torches.

if he actually somehow got a green light on Daikatana II, there'd just be this massive moment of silence in every gamer on the planet as a piece of each of us died.

i also wouldn't be surprised if you saw some just swear off gaming. considering how you have corporate conglomerates like EA cranking out the sequel game franchies each year and then add on a sequel by one of the most overrated guys in the business to a game that was so horrifically bad it's cd isn't even fit to be used as an AOL-type drink coaster.

a sad day in gaming, that will be.

Personally, I hope it's Daikatana 2, just so forum-goers will become pissed off and start angry-sobbing. Romero's supposedly a good guy, and any bashing of him at this point is, without a doubt, kinda sad.. you guys do realize that was 5 and a half years ago, right? Has he done anything that should even remotely piss you off since then? No?

BTW, Stevie was pregnant in that pic.

Also I want to have sex with Romero's hair.

Uh, yes and yes. It's the same as with that fucking guy from 3dRealms or whatever company is still attempting to produce Duke Nukem Never.

After something so stupid and rediculous, they just become the cliche and proverbial "laughing stock" of the gaming industry. Do ya remember E.T. on the Atari? a game so bad they had to landfill dump thousands of catridges. Yea, Daikatana deserved the same god damn thing, and Daikatana 2 will as well.

Angry elitest gamer? No. Matter of princple. Something so god awful will haunt that guy forever, and even if he makes a Daikatana 2 and even if it's the best god damn game ever created I'd never buy it fuck I'd never warez it simply out of a matter of princple.

The gaming industry is like high school. You get one chance, if you fuck up it will stick with you (more than likely, but not all the time) for the rest of your life (in this case career). Just the way the world works.

Here's Romero's big problem (and the one that will prevent him from every really doing anything great): he cannot look at his own work objectively. (so it would appear when you hear him talk about his work.) When he talks about Daikatana, his main thrust is that negative reviews killed the game. I've NEVER read any comment from him that would indicate he understands the game just plain sucks. If he can't learn that lesson, he is doomed to eternal failure.

Here's a guy who just plain don't get it.

I did modify my thinking a bit after DOOM 3 and after reading Masters of DOOM. As we all discovered D3 just did'nt live up to what we expected from id. If JR really wanted to re-define himself and show that much daunted imagination maybe he should just publish a free DOOM 3 MOD.

Currently, I could care less about about cell phone games and contract projects at Midway. If your a guru then gu. Since his last work was Daikatana and he says it
was a good game that got dissed by bad reviews I would think he falls in the I don't get it crowd.

c'mon give this guy a break. I'm sure he has matured enough and learned from his mistakes. Every person is allowed to make an ass out of themselves once in a while.
If you need proof of that, just read some of the comments on this board, only that it's not once in a while, it's almost every single time. *jabs with pointy stick*

I miss the good ol' days of PC Accelerator magazine when every issue included at least one or two slams on Romero, even if there was absolutely no coverage about anything Romero-related.

Examples :
1. "Well, it might be the shittiest game ever made, but at least it isn't Daikatana".
2. "Messiah was quite a letdown, but it's not as bad as Romero's haircut."

That, the incredible amount of swearing and hilarious writing made that magazine one of the best out there. I really can't remember why the magazine folded (no pun intended).

Matured? Yep he fell in love with a Romanian Teenager on the internet (Granted she is a hottie, but we are talking about maturity here right? ) Asked her to be his Girlfriend before they ever met face to face.... I’m not saying Romero isn’t a nice guy, he is very approachable (we are talking about a guy who takes time to help Modders out… a lot of time in fact.) and he dose treat his fans very well and is even polite to his detractors, but Mature? Nope, and despite the fact that I do blow him massive amounts of crap none of it is malicious, and trust me Romero can take it.

I have heard that he was kicking around an idea about a MMORPG using the Doom 3 Engine. Time will tell on what it will be and really at the end of the day I hope it’s a huge success whatever it is.

One chance? Lets see, Commander Keen (series), Wolfenstien 3D, Doom. What part did he screw up with these? Romero was very successful, previously. It's not his "one chance", he has already proven he can help ship a stellar game.

Because it's easier to throw barbs at someone who at least had the balls to follow their dream, than to actually nut up and put it all on the line to pursue your own passion.

Also, you notice that id got the "3d Tech Demo Company" rep *after* Romero left? It's not a coincidence.

Yea. I did notice that. :) I keep wondering if Raven and id will ever merge. Lets face it, both of those companies have been tight with each other, for a VERY long time. I can't think of an FPs game in recent history (since Doom) that Raven has done, that didn't use an id engine.

Unfortunately, from all I read he didn't. Last quote I read from him was along the lines "One thing I learned doing Daikatana: Get more experienced employees". Yeeesh yes, all their fault the game sucked...
