View Full Version : Monday Blues - What did you Actually Play?

You know it. It's Monday Blues time again. Feeling quite meh today so let's talk about all the fun we had playing our favorite pass time (next to drinking beer and such). So. What did you guys play the last couple of days? MGS4, MGS4, DMC4, or something else with a 4 in it? Still getting your ass kicked in Ninja Gaiden 2? Age of Conan got you hooked? Tell us all about it.

Finished up MGS4 on Friday. Best gaming experience this year so far. Pure brilliance. Started Ninja Gaiden 2 again and played some GTA. At Four Leaf Clover now.

Almost all Disgaea 2 and I'm really loving it. The story seems to be quite a bit shorter than the first (I'm at Chapter 10 and only about 19 hours in) so hopefully there's a ton of postgame goals to shoot for.

The only other gaming I did was the PS1 version of You Don't Know Jack with a friend who came for a visit Saturday night. The writing in that game is still so damn good.

Played Ninja Gaiden 2, only on the 4th level and it already feels repetitive.

Also, put in some time with CoD4, WoW and AoC.

CoD4 mostly when I had time to game. Also popped in Lost Odyssey for a bit, which is a really good game, but one you have to make time to play. Since I could only game in half hour bursts, I wasn't about to try and get sucked into LO.

I played the original Metal Gear Solid for the first time in about six years. I plan on getting MGS4 sooner or later, but I want to play through its predecessors first. (I lost patience with MGS2 and never finished it; never played MGS3.) I started out trying to play Twin Snakes on the Wii, but I just couldn't get used to the GameCube controls - I was all over the place and flailing for buttons, and that's a recipe for misery when you're playing a stealth game. So I went back to the PS version: it's not as pretty, but it plays beautifully.

Other than that, I played:
- Rock Band (there's always time for Rock Band, especially because my wife is able to play on Hard now)
- GTA4
- Everyday Shooter

I didn't get a chance to play anything this weekend as I was at the beach with the girfriend and visiting with her friends in NYC. If I had played this weekend I would have tried to finish the bank heist mission in GTAIV which is a real bitch, for me anyway.

Castlevania: Portrait of Ruin: Just healed the sisters and unveiled "true" boss of the game. And 5 more paintings! Yay! This game rules!

Mass Effect: finished the C-Sec Academy and went down to The Wards. I'm searching for The Keepers to scan as well as enjoy the fact that OMG KROGAN is in my party. This game really rules... good old BioWare.

Lost Odyssey begs to differ. ;)Ah, they're both pretty close, though MGS4 has a few more exploding robots...

I did play a lot more TWEWY and Space Invaders Extreme than pretty much anything else this weekend. I'm still not finished TWEWY but I am hopefully on track to get it done and over with before FFTA2 hits this week.

MGS4... Sigh. I had really hoped to finish the game this weekend but I only ended up playing a tiny bit the other night. I'm somewhere near the middle/end of Act 3 and will be finishing that fight before I head to work this morning. I was just so tired this weekend that I couldn't muster up enough energy to do much more than read the MGS Database.

I did play a bunch of Rock Band on Saturday morning, come to think of it. I'm still working on the final tier of Expert Guitar songs... I can get a good 70% or so though most of them but that's about it right now. That's the problem with only playing once a week or so...

Other than that, I spent the weekend either recovering from the hell week of last week or trying out our new car. Oh, and we had our son's 4th birthday party on Saturday at McDonalds, which was pretty enjoyable. I spent so much time on Saturday and Sunday fiddling with Hot Wheels tracks that I can still see the orange plastic whenever I close my eyes...

Lost Odyssey begs to differ. ;)

Blah. I own it and will probably go back and attempt it again someday, but on disc two 13 hours in I gave up. Huge JRPG fan, didn't care for it. Not bad, just...I don't know.

I played GTA IV all weekend. Got rehooked. Probably more hooked than I was at any point while playing the game. I think there are some really interesting missions in the game (stealing the "cursed" shipment and "I'll Take Her") but many missions are very repetitive. Some of the chase scenes have scripted events like car crashes or roadblocks happening just as you're coming through. I don't like that much, and though I think the missions need more diversification, I still love the game.

I assume this is a golfing video game, and not some strange attempt to go Outside where the bright and vengeful Sun God lurks.

Personally I played EVE, S.T.A.L.K.E.R., TF2 and AoC. It's certainly nice having a computer with a half-way decent video card.

Ninja Gaiden II! and I might add that it's not as frustrating as the first game was. Its by no means easy, it has that "just right" difficulty. Just hard enough to make me languish in my defeat and rue fighting the same enemies again. Yet not so difficult that I want to throw my controller through mt TV.
Playing NGII inspired me to go back and work through NG1. It's kinda weird playing through the first and second game in a series at the same time.

Oh, also my Wii got some attention as well, as I played some Metroid Prime 3. Man I missed that game.

I played quite a bit of Mario Kart Wii on Friday. I won 2 out of 3 rounds. Saturday I went to MS and played something under NDA. I also picked up Lost Odyssey and played that for about 90 minutes. So far I am liking the FFX style enviroments with a bit of FFX and Legend of Dragoon mix of gameplay. I am going to try to make some time to play more because I hear the story feels like somewhere about FF4-6 territory and that sounds compelling. Sunday got to play juggling family at my engagement dinner. Considering no one gets along in my family, it went surprisingly well. Now all I have to do is wait until August and then not ever have to worry about it ever again! The wedding game is hard...

I played some more WoW, trying to get my alt leveled into the 30's for the new patch (mounts at level 30 now!). I also picked up Disgaea to tide me over until A2 drops, whch has been pretty fun so far.

So far (only 90 minutes in, give or take a few) the battle system feels like the love child of Final Fantasy X (you get a battle list down in the bottom left) and Legend of Dragoon (timed button presses to increase damage or do status effects). The way you move around feels a lot like FFX as well. The areas and the map especially.

From what I've heard around the forums the story is reminiscent of FF4-6 but I can't confirm that yet. I'll be playing it over the next few months (or years, it's 4 freaking disks!) so hopefully it turns out to be good.

Well, this isn't my first time at the rodeo. Last Feb I actually leveled up a Warlock to 70, and so she's been funding this new character (I'm flush with cash between tailoring and running dailies).

However, I'm sure I'd have had the money easy because (and maybe this is the economy on my server being crazy) it's EASY to get lots of cash. If you put up a decent green you can get between 1 and 5 gold for it, even in the high teens. Ore (I'm mining) is going for 2g for a stack of Copper, 8-10g for a stack of Tin, and Iron is going for about 12-15g for a stack. Plus, I'm selling my mats I get from disenchanting them for sometimes 4g for a stack of strange dust and 8-10g for a stack of soul dust (or whatever the second type of dust is?). I'm flush with cash. Sunday morning I had 90g for my Warlock and 50g for my new character. I ran my dailies and made my spell/shadow/moon cloth and put them up for sale, plus put up all the junk in my level 28's bag, and now my main has 500g (with another 80g up on the AH) and my warrior has over 200g on him. Cash is stupid easy to come by, because EVERYONE has lots of cash thanks to the dailies. Good? Bad? I think it's good, personally.

Still playing "Reiinstall everything from my last OS re-install"...you know how you keep forgetting to install stuff until you need it the most...

Really getting into Shadowrun [PC]...I can't believe I missed out on this game before. Lot's of interesting abilities for a FPS.

Bought and played a little Call of Juarez [PC]...pretty game, haven't played enough to form an opinion.

Some Half-Life 2 Ep 2 [PC]...still trucking along. Finally went back to it after stopping when I got stuck at an area...ended up being my stupidity and I got by it.

Installed and played about 4 hours of Sid Meier's Railroads last night...haven't played that in ages and it sucked me right back in. Nice and relaxing evening.

Fired up M.A.M.E...haven't touched it in ages and a lot is out of date, but got to play the games I wanted to play.

Other than that...on the non-PC side

Finished Professor Layton [DS]...well, the story at least. Wow, what a great game :)

Some NDA [360]... ;)

Finally, on Sunday, I celebrated Nintendo's WiiWare movement by playing some of the best available titles. Cleaned out the garage and took a load to the dump. Ripped out the tile and wallboard from the master bath to get ready for the remodel. Cleaned a lot of crap out of the house. Had family over.

Put in an offer on a new house.

Reloaded Diablo 2 to get the No-CD patch installed. Played that for a bit.

Downloaded and played through the Hellgate: London demo. Liked it so much I bought the game with a local store coupon. Cost $15. Home ill today so I've been playing it most of the day. Having quite a bit of fun with it! Just the SP game so far - Not a big MP fan.

I should have it finished by the end of this week so we can finally have that Spoilerific thread :)

As for MGS4, I'm just starting Act 4. Great stuff. I read a great review (http://www.thestar.com/entertainment/article/446323) today, at least when it came to reconciling the cinematics and gameplay conundrum.

First of all, the secret is just to split your comprehension of the MGS series into two distinct channels – the Metal Gear Solid titles aren't games that include a lot of long movie bits; they're both movie and game, two distinct works co-habiting the same package, taking turns occupying the player/viewer's consciousness. In my barely legible notes, scribbled sometime in the early-morning darkness of my 20th hour of MGS4, I compare the series to an omnibus volume of the Lord of the Rings books: it functions both as fantastic literature and fantastic doorstop ... but it doesn't function as both at once; reading it, your door swings shut.
