View Full Version : 250,000 Creatures Created In 24 Hours

At least, according to EA. GamesIndustry.biz reports (http://www.gamesindustry.biz/articles/spore-sees-over-250-000-creatures-created-in-a-day) that in just 24 hours, EA says 250,000 creatures were created and uploaded to the Spore Community website. The publisher claims more than two are being shared every second, and at its peak there were 1000 creatures changing hands every minute.
"The response to the Spore Creature Creator has been overwhelming," said Lucy Bradshaw, executive producer for Spore at Maxis.
"The creativity and passion that the community is putting into their creatures is spectacular. The development team has spent the last 24 hours checking out the amazing creations racing in from all corners of the globe - with peak volume hitting more than 1,000 creatures being shared a minute."
So, how many did you make yesterday?

Its really a shame about the copy protection in the game... putting that shit on a beautiful game like this is the same as gang raping a 16 year old child prodigy... o_O

I made exactly "0" creatures as I was content to sit back and laugh my ass off at the 100's of penis creatures and a few other wonky xxx ones.
I have to wonder if EA will try to somehow disallow/prevent users from creating such marvelous beasts. I don't see how though and since it's not a multiplayer game I don't suppose parents need to worry about some stalker penis creature raping their kid's creatures (lol).
In any case, I still stand by my original sentiments that I will not be paying any $$ towards buying/playing spore as I will not support EA's planned DRM'ing of this title.

Probably because of all the Penis-men.

I made about fifteen in the demo. But because of their horrid DRM, I opted not to buy the creator, and I'll likely not buy the game either. Four years of anticipation, wasted. $60 that was in their pocket, now it's going to more deserving publishers. I hope their DRM makes up for the lost sales.

That doesn't do me any good. When I ran it, it gave an error about my Windows platform.

I downloaded it, but didn't get an opportunity to install and play around with it. I might do that tonight, but if not, I'll wait until the weekend when I've got my son - I'm curious to see what some of his ideas for it might be, seeing as how he's 5.
I really don't know what to do on buying the game - I want it, but part of me says "don't buy it" based on principle.

From what people have posted on the forums, the demo has the exact same DRM...
I'm not on EA's side and their DRM policy is terrible, but how many of you guys will re-install the game over 3 times? Even if I reformat, I keep all my games on a separate hard drive so I just reformat the windows partition and there is no need to reinstall anything. (This works for Steam, AoC, Vanguard, WoW, EQ, CoD4, Battlefield, Unreal Tournament, etc) So I'm sure it works for spore as well.
@Schnoogs
Works fine on Vista for me as well, do you have a decent video card / latest drivers? No idea what the problem could be.

Pretty incredible success so far. It looks like 2008 will be the year user generated content in games (Game 3.0 as Phil Harrison would say) really took off.

The problem I have with the DRM is that I would likely install this on my laptop and my desktop eating up two of my three installs instantly. If it ends up on my wife's computer as well (which it will) than there we go... I'm done.
Though I thought that they were changing the DRM to SecuROM?

Do you understand that you have to reinstall if you reinstall Windows, install a new version of Windows, install a new video card... etc? Yes, I can say with absolute certainty that I'd need to be able to install this game way more than three times, partly because of this insane authorization system, and partly because I planned on playing this game for a very long time.
There is absolutely no defense for this kind of shenanigans.

I've waited this long for Spore, I can wait a few more months for the full game. It'd be a different story if this was given free for preordering Spore, but having people pay $10 on top of the full game cost to be able to create creatures early and do nothing with them seems silly to me.
See you all in a few months for this one. :)

Really? If thats true, thats quite insane. I doubt you have to for a video card.. minor detail, but really even with windows? I'm guessing this isn't on any of the battlefield games then and is a new "great invention" of theirs?
I've reformatted like three times and I'm still using the same / original Battlfield 2142 / CoD / Steam installs.
Perhaps a torrent is looking even better now.
@Shuni, I thought I read that the cost of the creator editor goes toward the price of the full game.. I could be wrong.

BF2142 doesn't use this type of DRM, this is a recent thing. CoD isn't published by EA, and Steam is actually the right way to do DRM. As to the video card thing, let me quote from a different topic (http://www.evilavatar.com/forums/showthread.php?t=54784) we've had on the subject:
That “friendlier” but still unfriendly method of authentication has now proven itself to be flawed (http://www.simprograms.com/?p=692), as it seems that people are burning through activations so quickly that they have used them up less than a month after purchasing the game. Something as simple as replacing a video card can use up an activation, and gamers who constantly upgrade would obviously be hit by this pretty quickly. Interestingly, the solution provided by EA was for someone to buy another copy of the game.
Believe me, I'm as big of a fan of Spore as anyone out there, and I'm really pissed that they have done something so stupid that it has actually killed my anticipation for a game that I thought might be the best game ever.

LOL, I really doubt that's the case, you don't need to reinstall software after a video card install.
You will PROBABLY have to re-install after a re-build of the system. I suppose it's possible you could make an archive of the program files folder it's installed to, and then re-copy the folder over to the newly built system, but if there is any registry information you'd need to export that out as well, I'd assume, and re-create your shortcuts. It might be possible, but unlikely.
I think this is shit, personally, as I do tend to re-build my systems ever 4-8 months or so, just to have a nice pristine system. I do believe while I will purchase the game, once I run out of installs I'll be hitting up the torrent sites. *sigh* Just the very thing Brad Wardell warned the industry about in the first place.

Yeah if you read the quote above me, apparently their DRM is flawed(broken) and it says adding a new video card can use up an activation.

Damn, I thought I remembered hearing that this game was coming to the 360 at some point, but I don't see it listed as such on Gamespot. Well, I don't have a computer that could run it, so there goes that game for a while...Hope they resolve this DRM crap by the time I get to it.

More to worry about with SPORE:
http://www.moreawesomethanyou.com/smf/index.php/topic,12208.0.html
As if SecuROM wasn't bad enough, there is also a MASSIVE SECURITY LEAK in Spore: If you EVER share ANY content with ANYONE, be warned that YOUR COMPUTER USERNAME is ENCRYPTED INTO THE CREATURE "IMAGE" FILE. YOU WILL NOT BE ABLE TO REMOVE THIS INFORMATION BY HEXING! This means that ANYONE who downloads it will know what your username is on your computer.
This represents a MASSIVE security breach because many people (foolishly) encode their real names into their Windoze username. Even if you don't, revealing this username to the world presents a point of vulnerability for attack by hackers. By sharing any Spore content ANYWHERE, you are leaving your computer open to attack and leaving yourself open to stalking and identity theft.

LOL, I really doubt that's the case, you don't need to reinstall software after a video card install.
If it is like many of the newer DRM solutions the software uses a variety of criteria to decide if the software is launching on a different computer than it was activated on.
Part of the DRM will do a hardware hash during the install then send that to the server and store it somewhere on the computer. Every time the game starts it will do a new hardware hash and compare that to the one it stored locally during the install. If the hash varies by a certain amount then it considers it a new installation.
This is why changing the video card might throw the hash out of compliance and require a new activation. Pieces of hardware are "weighted" with different values. Go out of tolorance and it thinks you've installed to a new machine.
This may also part of the reason these games will "call" back to the EA master server every 10 days; probably to verify that the hardware hash stored on your machine still matches the one that it grabbed when you installed.
I don't have any proof and no company will really talk about how their DRM works so take the above with a grain of salt :)

I would to see their train of thought when they decided to go with this. Those who want to download it and play for free will do so the moment a first torrent shows up and those who want to fill their Sporepedia with creatures from around the world will pay to play anyway, why ruin their fun with such stupid limitations like install limitation or spying?

Here's a thread from the rpgcodex
http://rpgcodex.net/phpBB/viewtopic.php?t=24751
that deals with just how EA (at least EA USA) sees rude and inapproprate content.
Here's the link to the website from the codex thread:
http://www.gamesradar.com/pc/spore/news/busted-boobalicious-banned/a-20080618155715463076/g-2006022417441549006
As you can only -ehm- breast or do I dare say mammalies with some upheavals on them have been banned or flagged as inappropriate by EA (USA).
No word so far as to whether the people having created huge dongs, wongs, and -ehm- penis animals have been flagged for creating 'inappropriate or rude content'.
That said, are all these people 5 years old or haven't they gotten through puberty yet??
I'm sorry, but I don't think it is very creative to create 1000's of the same animal species whether it be penis animals or mammalian creatures. (creatures that only are breasts and nipples)
As to the animal or creature that has been flagged by EA (USA) it is a very nice looking showing real creativity and uniqueness - and as it is being female it needs breast with nipples as well. But no, everyone knows that nipples are the evil and can hurt children if they see them. (sarcasm mode on here, guys).
Frankly, I don't see what the fuzz is about...
