View Full Version : Weekend Gamer - What are you playing?

Another weekend, another weekend closer to Gothic 3. I am going to finish playing Stronghold 2 this weekend (ok campaign, but still a good castle building sim). I will also sneak in some CoH and maybe some WoW. It is interesting that once you stop playing a MMORPG, it can be hard to get back into the game again. What games will you be playing this weekend? What games are you waiting for?

What games will you be playing this weekend?
Rented Burnout Revenge (http://www.gamerankings.com/htmlpages2/927224.asp). My early impressions are that it's not as good as Burnout 3 and the differences just aren't interesting enough to warrant a purchase given that I already have Burnout 3. Chalk that up to EA's ownership of Criterion.

Edit: Might add that those of you with real subwoofers may want to turn them off. The bass effects seem cranked up way too much; I turned mine off as the constant rumbling was annoying.

Will probably just stick with Battlefield 2 (http://www.gamerankings.com/htmlpages2/920407.asp) instead. For all it's issues it's still a fun game -- most of the time. We can probably chalk 50% of the issues up to EA's ownership there, too. ;) The other 50% are because of the way many people play it.

What games are you waiting for?
Age of Empires III, Civilization 4, The Movies immediately come to mind.

I'm playing with my DVD remote. Holding it out towards my TV, shaking it around in the air, waving my arms wildly. It's pretty damn exciting. Everyone else around here should give it a shot.

Probably taking a chunk out of Radiata Stories and maybe trying out Xmen Legends finally. I hate hack and slashers, but I'm in a certain mood right now.

Oh, and putting more time into my newest short story, which I'll be posting in the Writer's Guild in a week or so, when it's complete.

battlefield 2.

also, that shadow warrior expansion pack. it DOES work with the jonof shadow warrior thing.

IF you're curious: the epansion exe will extract everything it needs to install to your temp directory. take the grp file out of that and rename it to sw.grp and put it in the jonof folder and play. when it asks you which episode to choose, choose the second episode (non shareware).

I just started a fresh game of Deus Ex. Although I hate designating favourite games/movies/books/whatever, if someone held a gun to my head and forced me I would probably still say that Deus Ex is my favourite game to date. Other than that no need to describe it any further as I am sure everyoned here has played it and if you have not then you should be ashamed of yourself.

Other than that I am desperately trying to resist the urge to buy Burnout Revenge. I officially dislike racing games, but I had such a blast with three and the demo of Revenge is so fucking great that it is taking every ounce of my will stay clear of it. I simply keep telling myself that $60 Canadian spent on Burnout is $60 I could put towards a 360 and luckily that is working so far...

It is interesting that once you stop playing a MMORPG, it can be hard to get back into the game again.

This could be a whole new thread of discussion :)

I've played SWG, EVE Online, WoW, Planetside, and sampled EQ2, CoH and The Matrix. Of those I've played SWG and WoW the longest, but it is only EVE and Planetside that I went back to and resubcribed for maybe a month or 2. Lately I've had a very small urge to try WoW or EVE again, but that feeling is easy to ignore.

Back to the topic. It's BF2 all weekend for me.

I'm coaching an U10 girls soccer team and we have a game this morning, so I guess that's what I'll be doing. Then I'll be playing 'study-for-an-exam'. Then I'll be eating Mexican food with my wife. Then I'll be watching Crash. And, finally, it's off to bed.

Tomorrow, on the other hand, will be game-tastic...

I'm in the same boat right now. I reactivated my WoW account and played pretty hardcore for a month. I got a hunter up to 42, had logged about 6 days worth of playing, and realized that I had literally spent all my free time in the last month playing WoW. So I cancelled and now I'm unsure as to what to play. I shuffle around my apartment, turning on my Cube or Xbox for a few minutes, sitting back at my computer to play Psychonauts for a half-hour, but it all seems weird. In some way it was nice having one game you knew you were going to spend all your time playing. But, I was ignoring the rest of life (I hadn't bought groceries in three weeks - I was down to eating canned goods and freezer-burnt chicken) so I think it's for the best that I cancelled.

Anywho, maybe I'll poke around Gamerankings and find a console game to buy. I have an Xbox and Cube - anybody have suggestions on a fun, quirky title?

What console genres do you enjoy? Paper Mario is great for the GC and Phantom Dust is interesting for the Xbox. I dont know of they are "quirky" but they aren't standard games either. I also scour gaming sites for titles I might have missed.

More Guild Wars.

I'm not enjoying the game as much as I used to. The desert/ascension area sucks. Really high level monsters and difficult to put a good group together.

Lousy elona reach mission. So close to completing it, so many times...

Been playing more NWN coop with my girl. I found a module that emulates Diablo 2, it's a total blast. Just fighting, loot and levelling. I also played some Xcom yesterday, but the psychic stuff really pissed me off (Ethereals MCing guys that are still in the Skyranger = lame).

For short fixes of strategy, I've been playing "Dogs of War", a freeware Axis and Allies clone. Easy to play, games don't last too long and victory is always satisfying.

Tonight I may return to Natural Selection. Hopefully I won't get pwned too bad, haven't played in a while.

Grr. I want the European version of Fahrenheit, not the watered down NA release... They finally put out an adventure game that people are excited about and the censor it on us.

Sigh.

Anyway, I'm playing Burnout: Revenge, Taiko Drum Master (got it for $35 new!) and hopefully more Radiata Stories. If I REALLY have time, I might see about getting a bit further in Darkwatch though it's starting to bore me now. I just joined the Darkwatch officially. Does it get better?

I played Burnout 3 a LOT and I'm really digging Revenge. The new features like Traffic Checking are a lot of fun. While the Crash mode is wierd, what with the multiple crashbreakers and lack of score bonuses, it's nice to see that they did something different with it rather than just regurgitating the previous version which was essentially the same in the past 3 games.

I also think that you MUST get the Xbox version, if only for the custom soundtracks. Racing around with MC Frontalot, the SSX Tricky soundtrack or the Animatrix OST as my driving music is awesome, especially compared to the crap they ship with the game.

For those of you who don't like racing games, I'm one of you. However, the Burnout games are more about causing mass destruction at high speeds, so at least try them out.

I'm heading out of town for a few days tomorrow and I'm debating whether to bring Golden Sun 2 or Advance Wars for my GBA with me. Speaking of which, is Advance Wars 2 worth tracking down or should I just be happy with my original AW? I wish I had a DS...

I'm also putting my son in the local fall fair's baby contest today so we'll see if he's can beat the local whippersnappers. I think he's trying to sabotage his chances though... we picked him up from the babysitter's house yesterday and it looked like he'd been in a bar fight with the other toddler there. Sigh. At least scars are sexy :P

Ever since I realized that "We Love Katamari" was coming out this Wednesday, I've been replaying the original. So, that pretty much answers both questions. :)

I've also been jumping around between SimCity 4 Deluxe and Dragon Warrior 2. But, after hearing from numerous people about how great "Lost" is, I picked up the entire first season on DVD. The show truely is awesome. The one thing about it though is that I am thrilled that I watched it on DVD instead of while it was on; the ending of almost every episode is a cliffhanger. I am both anticipating and dreading the start of the next season.

Mostly Dungeon Siege 2 (that hero's sword arm should be twice the size of his shield arm, the way he swings it like 50,000 times an hour), and Evil Dead Regeneration which is surprisingly good for a $20 game.

Speaking of We Love Katamari, I have been pretty ticked with Namco. Well, I really should be ticked at EB. They had it listed to come out on the 6th, then the 14th and now I see it's officially out on the 20th, which is cool because I'll be back from my trip then.

I just wish the dopes at the EB near me had told me it had been pushed back instead of saying, "Well, it's on its way to us according to the computer. Check back tomorrow... or the next day.. or the next day..." I feel like I did when I got the first one and had to stalk 4 different stores to make sure I got my hands on a copy!

Seeing pictures of the game complete with receipts from certain stores last week also set my blood to boiling. I WANT MY NEW KATAMARI GAME NOW!!!

Burnout Revenge here as well. Doesn't seem as hard so far, but I like the crash mode in this one better. It's more free-form with several options on how to score. The golf swing meter at the beginning is a waste of time though....so pointless.

But really, I like the speed and the multipaths, but there doesn't seem to be as much traffic as 3. The AI is cool though. One race I played, all 6 cars were neck and neck the whole time. 3's AI didn't allow this, but I tell you it was fun.

I dont know how much was cut, but with the UK version at least I know I'm getting the whole game. I just wonder how much replayability is here. It's an adventure game, afterall. And what's with changing the name for the same English speaking audiences? Weird, just like SMT: Nocturne becoming Lucifer's Call. Both are nice names, but I think Lucifer's Call would have got overlooked by the crazy christian zealotry here in the states.

I've played about 1.5-2 hours of Fahrenheit, and so far I'm digging it. You actually have to think on your toes a lot. I wont give anything away, but even in the first scene you have to think ahead and you can always dick around like normal adventure games. Time seems to be progressive, so if you dont do something in time (even if it seems you arent being timed!) you can be royally fucked.

It makes for a game that mimics real life, in a way. I am liking it so far, but I assume it's only this great the first play through, so I'm going to enjoy it as much as I can.

As the kids say, "OMGWTFBBQ!!?!"

I can't tear my eyes away from this movie! What boggles my mind is that Squeeeeenix isn't releasing THIS Final Fantasy movie in theatres. They'd make a killing! I don't even understand what 98% of the dialogue is and I can't stop watching it.

Well, I guess I can, because I'm typing this and I still have 40 minutes to go. Stupid family obligations.

Anyway, if you can, grab the fansub and check it out. The Bahamut sequence alone is awesome. I can't wait for October when the DVD reaches our shores...

Just hit 58 in WoW, so I'll probably be tying myself to the computer this w/e to try and get that much closer to 60 so, hopefully, by next w/e, I'll finally hit the mark. Been holding off on doing any side professions or leveling up my Leatherworking so I would have some personal end-game goals I can try and meet so that I have something focus on other than Instances.

Speaking of, went on my first ever Stratholme run last night to face-off against the Baron. Bunch of friends from various guilds all went. All in all, I'm glad I tried because I got the [Key to the City], so I can do that raid whenever now and not just be dependant on others to get me in. However, we did a heck of a job on all the mini-bosses but got ourselves handed to ourselves when facing off with the Baron. Couple that with the fact that the only high-end drops were either cloth or plate - none of which I could use - then all the greed lotto rolls we made at the end for all the left over stuff (which would have made a pretty penny), I didn't win any of. So, all in all, three hours and I left with a key and 1.5g in repairs lol. Ah well. Best get used to it.

Just can't fathom my luck on all rolls would be that terrible. Tried convincing them my pet should get a roll too as he was being discriminated against, but they wouldn't have it. Maybe while in-between questing and waiting on an instance PUG, I'll try and hunt down a copy of Burnout or Indigo.

At first I was afraid my television couldnt handle it, being a PAL game and all (my PS2 cant play PAL games, the television always fucks up) but it works flawlessly. You can get them from UK sellers, or less reputable ways. I think Kefkataran picked up a UK copy recently too, for about 55 bucks shipped. Or you could just wait a little more until the US version is released. So far I havent seen any sexual content that would mean censorship, but I'll find out soon enough, I think.

That's why, once people start doing serious raids on places with low percentage drops of the good stuff, they start using elaborate loot systems:

So I'll be playing Eve, and I'm about to play some more of Burnout Revenge (which absolutely rocks).

I played Eve Online for about a month probably 9 months ago. I liked it but it became boring (mining all the time) so I stopped playing.
I just reactivated my account this past week and I've been having a lot of fun this time.
I'm still mostly mining but I'm learning a lot more about the game, along with getting more involved in the community. It's a lot better experience than soloing it through the universe.

I'm the same way. I seem to collect games like genital warts, but I cant seem to even play some of them, let alone beat them.

I wanted to beat Radiata Stories this weekend, sink a bunch of time into it, but Indigo Prophecy/Fahrenheit has me intrigued. It's not a stellar title by any means, because of its strict adherence to Simon Says button pressing and Track and Field style button mashing for certain scripted sequences, not to mention the horrid character controls, but the story has me plowing along.

Rebelstar Tactical Command.

Word of advice to anybody else playing this game. With your main character, keep handgun, close combat, and psiops as high as you can. Handguns seem kind of weak, but their reaction speeds are much better and range issues become much less of an issue once you've bumped the skill. After I ran out of ammo for my 2 snipers, the 2 guys who carry machinepistols(handgun rating)are the the top killers.

There is a level where having those three skills maxed makes the level doable, instead of insanely frustrating. I've replayed it over 15 times now, sigh, and still haven't completed it. Oh yeah, my main guy has 0 handgun, 1 psiops and 0 close combat, LOL. I might have to restart.

Oh, another word of advice, don't rely upon sniper rifles, they stop giving you ammo for them after awhile. You can have one person snipe, and probably last most of the game, but if you trick out two or three, like I did, you'll run out of ammo and also end up with three people with all the levels, while the rest of the team is weak. Same goes for HE and Incendiary grenades.

Just cancelled my WoW account, so another RPG doesn't sound very appealing at the moment. Adventure/platformers, RPGs and FPS/action games are my favorites.

I checked some reviews on Phantom Dust - looks very interesting. I'm currently playing Pyschonauts, so Majesco has a warm little place in my heart. Perhaps I'll check it out. Thanks for the suggestion.

Last, but not least, Rebelstar Tactical Command has my attention on the GBA.

I'm one of the few people who have never sat down and beaten Halo 1 on the Xbox. I won't list the reasons why, I just haven't.

The sad thing is that last night I had a very detailed dream where I sat down and worked on Halo and must have been very close to the end... then I woke up and realized that all that work never really happened and I still have to play through the game.

Sad... I mean, I don't even particularly like Halo. Why did I have such a long dream about playing it? WHAT DOES THIS MEAN!?!

I am playing catch up after being down and out following Lasik surgery. If all goes well, I'll be looking for a new game to snag this week.

Whoa, no PPK for you eh? You went for the eyeball slice? How was that? I've been considering it, but the idea of someone cutting my eyeball open while I'm awake and having to keep them open just blows my mind.

No, I was a better candidate for the Zyoptics and I went to your country to have it done. I went to LasikMD in Windsor on Friday for my exam, had one done locally by my doc who recommended I goto LasikMD since it was a reputable place and it was $1,500 cheaper, and went in Saturday morning for the procedure. It really wasn't that bad, except for the smell of burning eyeball (sorry, it does smell like burning eggs to me), and by the time I got off the table 10 minutes later I could see as if I was wearing dirty contacts. By Sunday, today, when I got my final exam before heading home my vision is borderline 20/20 and will get better over the next week.

I simply got tired of wearing glasses for the past 30 years, so this will last me for 8-10 years before having to wear reading glasses.

Well I got sucked into the Burnout: Revenge hype and have been playing it for the past couple hours. I wanted to play some other games, but I was glued to the controller. Anyway, now it's time to go back to Radiata or Fahrenheit.

All over the Burnout Revenge. The track design is fantastic with alot of options. I still have a ton of cars to unlock and to fill up my Dominator bar :D

I'm really late with this but I've been playing Breakdown for the XBOX. It's actually an "ok" game with an awesome story. But holy fuck is the game cheap as hell.

I am going for Homeworld 2. I started it a while back, but the harddrive it was on crashed and I didn't feel like at the time replaying all those missions. Now, I've forgotten all about the game and going to go at it again.

So LasikMD is only using lasers? No cut/layer opening before they use the laser?

Whoa whoa, sounds terrible :(

I'll need vision correction when I start to box professionally. Burning eggs sounds scary...

I am sorry if I led you down the wrong path, they cut a flap in the cornea before using the laser. And my understanding of PRK was it's where they remove the surface of the cornea and then reshape with the laser in like they did with my LASIK. And it's for people who have corneas that are too thin to be cut to make a corneal flap.

All the gory details are here (http://www.lasikmd.ca) if you want to read. I am happy with it so far. *knocks on wood* :)

If you can take going various rounds in the boxing ring, then this will be a walk in the park. :)
